"Elon’s tweet does not match engineering reality per CJ." - CJ Moore, Tesla's Director of Autopilot Software

As an Engineer I definitely plan on using the line "does not match engineering reality" when dealing with people from marketing who overstate things, and I don't even work for Tesla.

    Autonomous Car Progress

My expectation is we'll see a variety of solutions. Owned vehicles that are not capable of autonomous driving Vehicle subscription model based solutions that are capable of autonomous driving. Where its targeted for people that need the convenience of having a car, and likely live in vehicle...

    Autonomous Car Progress

To really benefit from self-driving cars we need to be able to upgrade them on a regular basis to take advantage of new standards, and new technologies. To me this is where most of the expense will come in. I also question whether ownership model really makes any sense anymore for the...

    Autonomous Car Progress

The embedded video shows no information that it was hacked in. You only know it was hacked in if you look at who posted, and when they posted it (before Traffic light response was added). Where you have go to the YouTube link to see the description. But, yeah its possible for some individuals...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I'm not seeing any difference in the rear passenger airbag protection between a Prius V, and Tesla Model 3/Y. They both have only curtains. I think you missed the fact that they're there because it's not really clear from the diagram, but if you look at crash test photos you'll see them.

FSD Beta no improvements to highway driving?

I don't think we really know at this point as V9 hasn't been released to the early access people. At least not the early access people authorized to "influence" about it. If Tesla really does switch to all vision in V9 we could very well see positive or negative changes in how well FSD does...

CR Engineers Show a Tesla Will Drive With No One in the Driver's Seat

I agree with this, but there is a LOT of low hanging fruit in how much bad behavior a proper driver monitoring system can prevent. It prevents people from texting on their cell phones while having an L2 system engaged. This one is really important because L2 systems give the perception that its...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I agree with this. I feel like the order I listed them is both respectful to the people who died, and is the most realistic given my own world view. Except I would rank mechanical failure or electrical glitch higher than foul play. In terms of a non-evidence based list as there is no evidence...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I don’t think we have clarity on this just yet. One group of people claim that an FSD equipped vehicle can have AP activated on roads without lines such as the one where the accident happened, and a basic AP only vehicle won. Where they’ve tested both an FSD equipped vehicle and a non-FSD...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

It's a remote possibility, but its pretty far down yet is the first thing every media article brings up. I would list the likelihood as the following 1.) A high speed crash, and the driver simply slid over in an attempt to get out of the vehicle 2.) A high speed crash, and the driver went into...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

But, defeating safety devices should be at least as difficult as setting the time on a VHS clock. If a 70 year can defeat casually get around your safety check there is something wrong with your safety check. Teenagers are crafty so lets not use them as the goal post. But, upper management...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I think this incident has vaporized the button entirely. I simply can't see Tesla going through with it until more information is known about the cause of this fatality accident.
  13. S

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

On any kind of device that a user can endanger other people there should be some attempt at preventing misuse. I'm not saying the manufacture has to go out of their way putting multiple levels of redundant safety measures, but they should at least have a few checks. The lack of using the seat...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I agree in terms of capability, but people often fail moments. I've had countless times in my life where I failed the moment when that moment required something I wasn't prepared for. Back in the old days when the emergency brake was a lever it was pretty easy, but now days its always some...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I don't have any issue with adding the requirement that the seat has to be occupied before TACC/AP will engage. I think that just makes sense, and removes what I'd call casual abuse. So it forces anyone really trying to hack the system to go through a bit more effort. Now I'm not an advocate of...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

Everything comes down to what the crash speed was, and if the occupants were buckled in. If the crash speed was low it brings up the possibility that they were doing the "hey, look at the car driving itself with no one in the driver seat" stunt. But, where the person who activated it didn't...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

This confounded me a couple days ago, but I've concluded that there is a very real possibility that the activation requirement for AP is different whether someone has Basic AP or FSD. Why did I conclude this despite originally thinking that was just crazy talk? Videos showing AP could be...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

The author clearly doesn't understand the TMC forums. This is place of owners of which over half us including myself are NOT fervent supports of Tesla/Elon. In fact I'd say I'm quite the opposite where the Tesla I have now is likely my last Tesla. It's certainly not my last EV as I'll probably...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

We've seen numerous videos, and user reports that FSD equipped vehicles can activate on roads without lines. That it's at least possible in some cases. In the comment section of the Arstechnica article one user reported: "My partner and I both have M3's. His has the FSD package (not the Beta)...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

Thankfully we live in a world where Google can answer most any question. If you google how do anesthesiologist commit suicide you'll get the following entirely unsurprising answer. "My registry also shows that most of these doctors kill themselves by overdose. Many have been found dead in...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I have FSD, but this isn't something I've ever tried. I'm not questioning that its possible to engage AP on roads without lane marking as Elon is basically confirming that its possible with that tweet (why he specifically mentions standard Autopilot). We've also seen videos of it. I'm simply...
  22. S

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I was actually wrong about this. Technically it does matter because the activation requirements for AP is different whether someone has Basic AP or FSD. I simply didn't realize that when I responded with the same answer. Now sure it doesn't matter as it pertains to the accident since AP wasn't...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

Do you have Basic AP, EAP, or FSD? The problem with activating AP is that we either know or we have reason to believe that Basic AP has different requirements for activating AP. In Elons tweet he specifically said "standard Autopilot would require lane lines to turn on". I'm not sure what...
  24. S

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

It's entirely possible, but FSD wouldn't have made any difference.

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

#7 - AP can be enabled from a stop (100% not possible without a car in front of it).
  26. S

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

The problem with trying to pin it on TACC or AP is the need to have it activated. To activate either one you have to be going as it won't start from a stop unless its stopped at stop sign or a vehicle is in front of it, and then the passenger can reach over and hit the stalk. But, you need to...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

I've never seen that before. Is there any evidence of this? It's not something Tesla claims.

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

Anything pulled would have been uploaded right after the crash. In the event of a crash the car is supposed to upload information. We don't know if the car had the capability to upload information after the crash, but I think its likely that this functionality survived the initial crash. I...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

This is why a company needs a PR department. The story is all over the place with the assumption that AP did it or that AP was somehow involved. Sadly Tesla closed down their PR department.

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

Whether people die or not is irrelevant in trying to come up with how something happened. It's simply one possibility out of many, and what's really disturbing is how quickly the "experts" concluded that there was no driver at the time of the accident. As owners of the car its an important for...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

Doesn't sound like they know a whole lot about the vehicle, and the fact that there is a rather large opening between the two front seats to crawl to the back. Or the fact that people have been burned alive in a Model S before after high speed crashes. I would certainly rank moving from the...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

What do we know? The Vehicle was a 2019 Model S One of the victims was 59 years old, and the other was 69 years old. Neither victim owned the car or was that familiar with it One victim was found in the passenger seat, and the other victim was found in the rear seat. Was a high speed crash into...

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

Do we know if this was a Model 3 or a Model S. If its the Model 3 the rear doors are the ones that are a bit of a death trap. But, the front doors have mechanical door switches so one is better of using those to get out of the car in an emergency situation. They probably didn't know about them...
  34. S

2 die in Tesla crash - Report says "nobody was in driver seat"

It definitely checks the seatbelt as it won't let me take off my coat while driving with AP enabled. I simply can't see how AP was engaged in this incident due to the high rate of speed in a neighborhood cul-de-sac. Supposedly they crashed within a few hundred yards of where they started.

    OFFICIAL BUTTON WATCH

I have no idea why he keeps using Chinese solutions that even if they do come to market they'd never be released in the US. I'm a big fan of NIO, but I don't expect to see any of their vehicles on US roads anytime soon. So I wouldn't use them as an example. At this time there just isn't...

Washington to ban all new gas car sales in 2030

I hate this fractured approach. We need a federal level fast/super charging standard so charging is simplified. We need an electrical grid that can handle that many EV's. We need EV's that can push electricity back to the grid to have a more robust grid. I don't think this ban will...

Im predicting no FSD till DOJO

The general rule with Tesla autonomous driving is its always almost here The general rule with autonomous driving in general is its always 2 years away. I wish there was more focus on things like the limited V9 beta because we can learn a lot from how that goes when its pushed to current V8.2...

Poll: Will we see the FSD button in June?

    The maybe's just wimped out.
  39. S

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

But, how does the Robot feel about all this? You're telling the Robot it has to be 10X better than a human, and yet you won't give it any additional sensors. You won't even give it sensor redundancy. That's not fair. You won't even give it down facing cameras that humans get in the cars they...

EAP uses different NN to Autopilot?

I would turn off NoA (if on), and see what happens. I personally have to turn off NoA in places because it gets confused, and thinks I should be taking an exit so it slows down to get over. If turning off NoA doesn't fix it I'd ask for a refund. In any case it would make for a compelling test...

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

My expectation is they'll upgrade the front Radar, and they'll add side/rear radar. They currently have no redundancy when doing a lane change unless you could the ultrasonic sensors.
  43. S

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

My guess is it will be just like everything else Elon does where its continuous cycle of try, fail, change things up, fail, etc. The only thing they have to achieve is getting FSD good enough as an L2 system to sell it as a subscription, and stop selling it as a product. Once they have it...

    Autonomous Car Progress

There are two possibilities. One possibility is he was simply surprised that there wasn't any questions regarding Tesla's approach. The other possibility is he wanted to mock Tesla's approach on his own home turf, but no one was mentioning Tesla or Tesla's approach. Even after he posted that...

After what time has passed would you consider an FSD class action lawsuit?

Mental Masturbation is 99% of what's practiced in this section of TMC so that doesn't tell us anything.
  47. S

After what time has passed would you consider an FSD class action lawsuit?

For the timeframe I was referring to it did have one single price of $3K because EAP was a separate option at $5K. Even if I'm forgetting about some price change it was easy to see exactly what they paid for it as it was a clean separation from EAP. It was its own line item that simply had the...

After what time has passed would you consider an FSD class action lawsuit?

This is a pretty good example of the practical limits of it this kind of thing. Once a car is in a crash of any kind of significant force then it gets reported on the carfax, and its with the car for life. People can make a diminished value claim in attempt to minimize loss, but how successful...

After what time has passed would you consider an FSD class action lawsuit?

We had people trading in used Tesla's that were barely that old to get HW2/FSD so I don't dispute that. The problem is FSD didn't have a promised date, and always needed regulatory approval. This is one of the arguments I used to try to convince them NOT to do it. I've always been against FSD...

After what time has passed would you consider an FSD class action lawsuit?

I probably wouldn't have traded in my AP1 2015 Model S on a 2018 Model 3 if it wasn't for the sense that HW3 (it was promised to FSD buyers) wouldn't have a substantially improved freeway L2 experience. I never anticipated Tesla would achieve autonomous driving I never anticipated that NoA...
