Thoughts on High Mileage Model S purchase

I have over 100K miles on mine now. Is my car something I’d feel like selling with good conscience ? Certainly. It’s in great shape, and I would not be unloading it on anyone. In fact I’ve thought of upgrading to a newer LR but have so far decided I don’t want to. The total list of failures to...

    Supercharger - Groveland, CA (7 V2 stalls)

Charged here today. Starting from 25% SoC , I got 125 kW at the outset, which I thought was impressive. Outside temps around 80. Didn’t have any trouble with reception - I’m on AT&T

My Model S 85D and Tesla life at 100K miles

Interesting point here. I'm in the RM camp but I always tend to use both since the dash shows me RMs and the map shows %. RMs are useful for end to end mapping of required distance. E.g. I'm going between A and B separated by X miles. The RM figure of the SOC% Y is X+C . I find it more helpful...

My Model S 85D and Tesla life at 100K miles

Great post! I'm at nearly 99K miles on mine. I've had a total of one door handle done. This is despite all the door handles getting regular use by family. I don't know if it makes a difference but I turned off autopresent within the first couple of months of ownership. Most of the time I depend...

Late 2016 / Early 2017 S Owners: How Are Your Daytime Running Lights Holding Up?

I don't know if August 2016 qualifies as late, but I'm still on the functioning originals after almost 100K miles.
  6. S

    What's your S 75 range at 90%?

After almost 100K miles my 90% is 207-208 miles. Full is 230-231. Most of the time I keep the slider at 80% (185 miles) when I leave it plugged in the garage.

Supercharger - Culver City, CA - Washington Boulevard (LIVE 23 Nov 2021, 8 V3 stalls)

I was there at ~9pm on I think Christmas eve and the parking was complimentary. It made me take a ticket, but on the way out it reported parking as free and the gate was up. I don't quite know when they do this - I just remember not having to pay.

Firestone couldn't do wheel alignment on Tesla

Yep, I was handed the printouts when they did the alignment as part of the most recent regular service. They even quickly went over it with me advising me when would be a good idea to replace my tires.

Tesla Recalls Over 475,000 U.S. Cars on Camera, Trunk Issues

Got the recall email today, and set up an appointment on the app - they assigned a mobile service appt for mid Jan. Not having seen this thread beforehand, the email was confusing. It is literally titled "Model S Trunk Secondary Latch & Striker Recall" , and then goes on to say It wasn't...

Supercharger - Kettleman City, CA - Bernard Dr. (LIVE, 56 V3 stalls)

Yes I saw 55 listed and ~40 available in the display. There were no additional notes about any stalls being offline as I've seen in some other places.

Supercharger - Kettleman City, CA - Bernard Dr. (LIVE, 56 V3 stalls)

Sorry I didn’t check physically but the in dash display didn’t list anything as not working. There were cars spread all across the lot social distancing in a way so it seemed like everything was running. With family plus dog I didn’t venture to look much more closely.

Holiday travel availability / congestion at CA Superchargers; possible solutions, complaints, comments, discussion

I used KC2 yesterday around noon. The most convenient restroom option is to take the accessible ramp just off the lot up to Bravo - they have a large restroom, cafe, restaurant and more. It’s about a minutes walk. When I arrived northbound, KC1 had maybe 10-12 free and KC2 had 40 free so I...

Supercharger - Kettleman City, CA - Bernard Dr. (LIVE, 56 V3 stalls)

Was here yesterday afternoon. The original one had only a dozen spots left so we decided to head to this one, which has almost 40 chargers free. Between the two locations there were at least 50 spots, which was great given that the Bravo farms area was otherwise a zoo - there was so much holiday...

Supercharger - San Diego, CA - Friars Road (Mission Valley, LIVE 31 Jan 2019, 24 Urban + 24 V3 stalls)

Supercharger - San Diego, CA - Friars Road (Mission Valley, LIVE 31 Jan 2019, 24 Urban + 24 V3 stalls)

I didn’t really step out of the car to count but both had about half a dozen spots open at any given time. This was last weekend on an evening right in the middle of the holiday shopping rush. Given the parking crush, I was glad the Tesla folks were seemingly being diligent about moving their...

Supercharger - San Diego, CA - Friars Road (Mission Valley, LIVE 31 Jan 2019, 24 Urban + 24 V3 stalls)

They’re still there, across from each other. Stopped there earlier today and there were about 15-20 free at any given time, split across V3 and urban ones. Many of the V3 users appeared to be in their cars while the urban SC users appeared to be gone - good user behavior given the latter takes...

    500 mile road trip

That’s about what the I5/I405 HOV lane does in LA. I was averaging around 265 Wh/mi doing that , but benefited from being in the slipstream of the traffic with the separator set at 4. The consumption is over 300 Wh/mi if I’m doing that without the benefit of the traffic .

    500 mile road trip

Well that would include whatever is added at destination. The OP said 3-4 stops on the way, and I interpreted that as prior to reaching destination. Sure it's 3 stops for me if I also count plugging the car into my wall charger after getting home. Here's how we've done Bay Area to San Diego...

    500 mile road trip

Are the 2013 cars that slow to charge ? I've read stories of some cars having charging throttled. I know my 2016 does ~118kW which is essentially what it was new , and I've seen that number recently while charging during our last trip to SoCal. I know the newer ones are a lot faster, but even...

    500 mile road trip

It doesn’t functionally matter in my case since the older cars max out at <120kW rate . Both the SCs en route to SD have a mix of V2 and V3 chargers and I simply picked what’s a nicer spot to park im but both generally had availability . Ive seen the 80% limit imposed once on the way back from...

    500 mile road trip

I’m one of those who has never used ABRP. I’ve pretty much never done more than plug in the destination and let the cars display tell me . This year we’ve done Bay Area to Lake Tahoe in winter, and to San Diego in mid summer amidst the heat wave . Can make it to Tahoe (~230 miles, 6k ft) with...

Supercharger - Bakersfield, CA - Copus Rd. (LIVE, 20 V3 stalls)

I just used this one on the way back to the Bay Area from Anaheim . Works great if you’re headed NB from thereabouts in an older car - this one plus Firebaugh and you’re home . PS : the portapotties are huge, spacious and airconditioned . So decadent and luxurious . Thanks to everyone before me...

    What's your S 75 range at 90%?

94K miles, lots of drives early on discharging from 90->10% but not in the past three years. 90% is 208 miles, 100% is 228-229 miles, or about 11.5% from the original 259 miles for S75D. I've gained range in the past year. Doing just short city drives caused the rated range to drop under 200...

Trip from Sacramento to Los Angeles

Yeah... same at this end. Smoother ride preferred. But where are the pockets ? And my dad asked while exiting the back seat "where are the handles ?" I explained tersely that it's a limited edition model.

    Supercharger - Kettleman City, CA (LIVE 15 Nov 2017, 24 V2 + 16 V3 stalls, lounge)

The supercharger lounge in Seaside CA also has a code. Nice little lounge there with a kids play area back when I was last there 2 years ago. The lounge in Kettleman also has stuff to keep children entertained. They had the door access restricted even at mid day when it was staffed. Some folks...

Trip from Sacramento to Los Angeles

So that's two successive datapoints indicating mid-300s Wh/mi with 20s and 400 with 22s on an MX75D. Mine are stock 19s (MXM4 Primacys) FWIW. Its your choice but I'd rather take the range over the look, which I can't see from inside anyway.

Holiday travel availability / congestion at CA Superchargers; possible solutions, complaints, comments, discussion

They probably convince themselves it'll dissipate by the time they get there. In terms of range for the largest cohort headed south from the Bay Area, KC is the sweet spot, with Harris Ranch and Buttonwillow/Bakersfield on either side. With so many SCs it's less likely and not more so, that...

Trip from Sacramento to Los Angeles

400Wh/mi is quite high indeed - 60kWh in 150 miles. The higher frontal area on the X seems to result in much greater losses at higher speeds, as expected. I had AP set to 78 all the way from Santa Clarita to San Diego while getting under 270 Wh/mi, and in the 280-290 region through central...

Holiday travel availability / congestion at CA Superchargers; possible solutions, complaints, comments, discussion

Firebaugh is 'too early' for even a 75D heading south from the Bay Area - just about 120 miles. Harris Ranch is better, but typically more useful northbound after charging in LA. Kettleman is enough to get you over the grapevine southbound even in a loaded 75D. Southbound from Sac or especially...

    Supercharger - Kettleman City, CA (LIVE 15 Nov 2017, 24 V2 + 16 V3 stalls, lounge)

The in car display ought to more prominently display the door code here, perhaps proactively when plugged in. There was a steady stream of first timers pulling on the lounge door and being confused why it wouldn’t open. I helped three groups out that way.

Holiday travel availability / congestion at CA Superchargers; possible solutions, complaints, comments, discussion

Drove from Bay Area to San Diego and back last weekend. Stopped at Kettleman City and Santa Clarita en route. KC was 2/3rds empty around midday, and Santa Clarita had I think 6 spots open including a couple of 250kW ones. I got 118kW there - about the peak on my car. On the way back Sunday we...

Trip from Sacramento to Los Angeles

I just did Bay Area to San Diego and back. It turned out a lot more comfortable than assumed. 75D battery degradation

Aug 2016 build with AP1 / MCU1 . 94000 miles. My 90% is 206-208 miles, full charge around 229 miles. When new, the numbers were 232 and 259 respectively. Used to drive extremely long distances every week, but not much in the last 2.5 years. Almost all of the degradation was in the first 2-3...

    Supercharger stations full?

Was headed up to Tahoe on Sunday and used the Roseville Galleria one . No lines. I e used the Rocklin one in the past . The last time I had to wait for a spot was the Mountain View supercharger about 3 years ago.

    What's your S 75 range at 90%?

My original 90% was 232 miles at the time of purchase. I stressed the car hard in the initial years ownership, and it progressively dropped and stabilized around 212 miles . Then my driving habits changed and I barely did anything more than grocery and preschool trips, and it ‘fell’ more. But...

    What's your S 75 range at 90%?

2016 S75D with 91K miles. Lots of daily trips in the past that constituted 100-110% of rated range , typically 3x a week with supercharging. Very rarely driving long distances now . Pretty much always left the slider at 90% while charging using wall charger at home. 90% is 207 miles Full...

Model S as a Long Range Commuter Car

Since you're in AZ, you want to turn cabin overheat protection off when you leave the car parked, otherwise it'll eat the battery trying to keep the interior cool in a parking lot. Unless you've no supercharging options at all, you don't need to worry about range anxiety with any current Tesla...

Model S as a Long Range Commuter Car

I’ve done such a long commute in the past . It was easily manageable in terms of actual usage . You really just need to know where your charging options are and plan accordingly . I’ve left my car parked for days, even 2-3 weeks, and not had substantial range loss . During my longest trip I lost...

Out of curiosity, what do you hate about your Tesla?

To answer the original question : dealing with people who believe owning a Tesla means I subscribe to everything Musk says, does , doesn’t, implies or suggests . Or the folks who read about the latest AP accident or misuse . For better or worse, there’s a lot of publicity around this car.

Bay Area to SoCal in a Raven

Never mind a long range Raven, I’ve done this in my 75D charger to 90%, with one stop at Harris Ranch, keeping with the left lane traffic on the 5, in winter. If you’re driving a family, then in my experience the cars range is never going to be the issue - their need for stops will happen sooner .

    AP1 ONLY Please -- life after 2018.50.6

Well, I saw a definite downgrade in AP performance after the first of the three software updates a couple of months ago. AP suddenly became VERY laggy. It used to engage immediately on double tapping the stalk, but that update caused a 1 second or longer lag before AP would come to life. It was...

    AP1 ONLY Please -- life after 2018.50.6

There’s been a rash of software updates for my AP1 car in the recent past - today was my third update in about 2 months, to 2019.20.4.2 . Until late spring I hadn’t seen an update since about late January or so .

Do you use a Tesla Wall Connector?

I’ve done 80k miles on my car and only ever had the mobile charger and a 14-50 outlet . Well I had two UMCs, one permanently on the wall, the other in car. I got one of the referral award HPWCs and sold it because it was unnecessary .

    Non-deterministic "Nearby Superchargers"

That’s something I considered might be the reason - maybe it didn’t want to list half a dozen nearby chargers all with 0 occupancy and randomly picked ones further out .
  46. S

    Non-deterministic "Nearby Superchargers"

Yes I have . While in SoCal last weekend the superchargers list I saw in the app from San Diego area included options someplace along the northern arc of LA . I figured something was just broken in their algorithm.

FS: Signature Black Wall Connector (SF Bay Area)

President's Day Weekend - Superchargers on 101 Maxxed Out

Yes there was snow at the summit of the Grapevine and traffic went at a crawl northbound on Monday mid morning. I don't know if it was shut down ; it showed as red, but both the nav and Waze routed us through it anyway.

President's Day Weekend - Superchargers on 101 Maxxed Out

We just did Bay Area to LA/SD and back over the weekend too, but took I5 each way. Plenty of charging available along that route, though we noticed on the display that 101 SCs had higher utilization. We did Harris Ranch, Tejon Ranch and San Bernardino southbound, and Downey, Bakersfield and...
