Tesla Opens New 40-Stall Charging Station in Baker, Calif.

Well pre COVID I would almost always go to Vegas for long weekends. Hopefully one day we will be back to that.

Tesla Opens New 40-Stall Charging Station in Baker, Calif.

This is exactly my experience. Yeah most of the times it is empty but during holiday travel I’ve seen lines at Baker before. I mean Vegas has multiple 40+ pump gas stations. If anything the current DCFC capacity along that corridor is insufficient for holiday rush.

MCU1 with HW3 dashcam video. Very bad

Intel MCUs have much much faster IO especially when it comes to USB compared to the ancient 32-bit ARM platform on the Tegra 3. The Gordon Peak chipset also has Intel QuickSync Video accelerated encoding but I’m not sure if MCU2 re-encodes the video stream. MCU1 is so strained that I wouldn’t...

After FSD 3.0, Summon accident!!! Crashed my bumper and hood

FWIW those thin pylons/pillars have always been a weak point for Summon and Autopark. It seems like the ultrasonic sensors have poor coverage when it comes to such thin obstacles and I guess this shows that the vision system introduced as part of smart summon still isn’t enough :(

AP allowing 10MPH over limit (Red Light Stop).

Intel spent a whopping 15.3 billion dollars to buy out MobilEye. That’s not exactly a great value for Tesla compared to in house Autopilot.

Does anyone think MCU1 is fine?

I think that’s kind of the beauty of the analogy. For some people iPhone 5 and iPhone 11 are basically the same thing. To others they are a world apart given the latter has 50x the total compute power and breezes through operations that makes the iPhone 5 choke like vectorized maps and so on...

Windshield Repacement and AP Camera Recalibrate

Nice! My experience was in 2019 so a lot could've changed.
  8. C

Windshield Repacement and AP Camera Recalibrate

To be fair though, what has happened to me is considered extremely rare. They really do go through the vast majority of WS repairs with no impact to Autopilot.
  9. C

Windshield Repacement and AP Camera Recalibrate

Interesting! And just to add, in my case, after dozens of miles, it did not fix its own calibration. But after the service center did the full Autopilot recalibration with the big screen TVs / targets, Autopilot worked normally again.

It's official! Tesla website says HW2.0 cars "scheduling now" for MCU2 upgrade!

A few of us succeeded and none of us got invitations. I was able to get a MCU2 + AP2.0->HW3 retrofit two weeks ago with no qualms, and I can confirm everything works great. But others have tried and gotten told either they can’t do HW3 at the moment or they keep getting their upgrade date...

Does anyone think MCU1 is fine?

Technically the failure rate of anything is eventually 100% and the mortality rate of the human race is also 100%
  12. C

Does anyone think MCU1 is fine?

MCU1 isn’t terrible but MCU2 is sooooo much faster and just keeps getting better. MCU1 is very much legacy mode at Tesla and all we can hope is it doesn’t get less and less stable with each release.

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

It looks just like the ones from Hawaii. The video is a bit less orange hued and more reddish hued. It doesn't really affect the dashcam aspect, colors are a bit odd but you can still make out what you need to. It seems like their neural net performance isn't sensitive to RCCC vs RCCB. Red...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I wouldn't be so sure about the last part. The MCU seems to be in charge of deciding whether or not the vehicle can sleep, so a constantly crashing MCU seems like it could keep the entire vehicle from sleeping (not to mention a rebooting MCU is going to be a 12V drain which will fire up the DC...

    MCU2 worth it?

The easiest way to tell with modern firmware is to go to your software updates tab and look at the hardware configuration. It says whether it's Nvidia Tegra (old) or Intel Atom (new) The other telltale sign is if you do a scroll wheel reboot, if both the IC and MCU go dark, then you have MCU2...

    MCU2 worth it?

based off my sampling, it was around the timeframe of AP2.0 and the 75kWh intro onwards that the screens started exhibiting that behavior.

    MCU2 worth it?

I've been in 3 MCU1 cars that had the yellow border issue so I don't think the yellow border is specific to MCU2...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

FWIW there is no possible way that IC1 would work with MCU2... that sounds like nonsense. Plus part of the slowness for rendering FSD visualizations is IC1 (which uses an even older Tegra chip than the MCU1). It makes no sense to me why they'd attempt to make a MCU2+IC1 frankenstein. FWIW in...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

Great to hear your success story, that makes a few of us now! I'm pretty shocked that mine went through without issue too, because my paperwork was prepared differently compared to the other P/N's I see listed here, and the service advisor was very confused why I would replace a functioning...

Model 3's awesome Neutral coasting / Is it more cost effective than regenerative braking?

Changing speed is inefficient (regen 5mph, accelerate 5mph, that's not energy neural due to inefficiency in both directions). But if you control the accelerator pedal to not have any energy output on your bar, it's about equivalent to neutral coasting. But really in reality, the range...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

This is 100% correct. To provide smooth operation and acceptable torque (to avoid unstable rolling back and forth) on a induction motor, operation at low speed is much much less efficient than operating a PM motor the same way, and sometimes can be a worse load and higher heat output than low...

    2020.16.2.1

Yeah I've been noticing steady progress over the recent 2 years. Sure, some releases have some setbacks and new bugs, but in general, AP has been progressing and increasing in functionality. Most of it has been arriving incrementally which is probably a good thing. The release that turned on...

    2020.16.2.1

Yeah it was such a refreshing release. I bet Tesla felt burned that Elon teased that "silky smooth" update under Lattner's reign and when it actually was released it was an utter joke. Like there was nothing silky or smooth about it. I remember driving on a trip to Tahoe. I got the silky smooth...

    2020.16.2.1

Happens ALL THE TIME haha. When Karpathy took over his update turned AP2 from this joke of a bounce bot to a smooth driving Autosteer. The release notes simply said minor improvements.

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

It clearly says that dashcam color tone may vary. But really does this matter? I have a HW2.0 and a HW2.5 car and one of them records creepy reddish gray footage and the other records creepy orange mars like footage.
  26. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

Nice! Yeah FWIW if it helps you: My car actually had 2020.12 nav loaded on from the UI and it said there were no updates. But after a MCU2 reboot and letting the car sit there for about an hour, I went back in and it said the traffic lights were ready!
  27. C

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

It will be whatever hardware is required to make it work to some definition of Full Self Driving from Tesla, which means if they can achieve that with AP2.5 or AP3 they don't owe it to you to upgrade you to AP4/AP5, even if the newer hardware suite does a better job at it. It seems like Tesla...
  28. C

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

It was electric, fast, higher range than anything else on the market at the time, and was large (both in terms of interior space and hauling capacity). And both in terms of infotainment and Autopilot capabilities ever since Karpathy took over it's been one of the most compelling ADAS systems...
  29. C

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

Yeah I think this pricing structure fixes a lot of the complaints about the FSD package before. Currently, the FSD package contains auto lane change, summon (smart or dumb), Navigate On Autopilot, etc, plus the promise of future feature additions, plus the HW3 retrofit. Before, the FSD package...
  30. C

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

I don’t personally need it to appreciate the cost of my vehicle. As long as it gets me the features I want and is economically more viable than getting a new Tesla then I am open to retrofits for a fee.
  31. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

The Hardware Info button of your infotainment software updates tells you which HW you have, both MCU and AP. But yes, some people lately have gotten told that they can get MCU2+AP2.0 but not MCU2+AP3.0 yet. Others like me as recently as yesterday have been able to get both done at the same time...
  32. C

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

To be clear, I think Tesla's main roadblock to FSD is that their software isn't ready yet. I agree the "pending regulatory approval" wording is misleading because it makes it sound like Tesla has everything ready but just isn't getting permission yet. I'm just trying to point out that even...
  33. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

Yes, you retain your premium connectivity. The warning is for people who have bought used Teslas with MCU1, for example, which may not come with premium connectivity. If you have it already (which basically all original MCU1 owners have), you will continue to have it.
  34. C

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

Such filings are considered confidential and trade secrets, as they detail specific algorithms and under-the-hood implementation details. I'm not at liberty to share any of the filings that I've worked on before but I'm not sure if you can FOIA the NHTSA for Tesla's filings. But here's an...
  35. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

Interesting -- my HW2 car was eligible for both HW3 and MCU2 at the same time. It sounds like they might not be scheduling HW2->HW3 for everyone yet.
  36. C

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

I don't think the difference is as great as you expect it to be. The way that a company prevents an expensive recall and potential enforcement action from the federal government is basically a filing to the NHTSA that amounts to asking permission, and the NHTSA generally provides some guidance...
  37. C

    Anyone got HW3 retrofit yet?

If you're talking about it in the US, the NHTSA technically does have arbitrary and total authority to deem any vehicle fit or unfit, unfit either meaning it cannot be sold to consumers or means it requires a mandatory recall to correct it. You're right in that there's no specific regulations...
  38. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

No it's specifically retrofitted MCU2s that don't have radio. The radio tuner module is buried even deeper behind the steering wheel and would require even more disassembling / labor to get to it, which is likely the reason Tesla doesn't want to do it for $2500.
  39. C

    Autopilot sensor replacement $190?

I still think maintenance is separate from repairs. The car also doesn't have magical bulletproof/nailproof tires and replacing a tire can be $200 too.
  40. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

Confirmed: Got my car back and it went from AP2.0/MCU1 to AP2.0/HW3/MCU2, dropped off on a Friday afternoon, got back end of day today. Service advisor actually sounded confused at drop off time why I'd replace a functioning MCU. Seems like they don't do a lot of these infotainment upgrades...

    Autopilot sensor replacement $190?

Sounds like a parking sensor was damaged. Indeed it is normal for warranties to not cover damage as a result of rock collisions. This would be covered by car insurance but for a $190 part it's probably not worth filing an insurance claim....

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/attachments/58564964-64f6-48e7-9f28-af7a5da6d2d8-jpeg.540821/ It seems like the other upgrades have "9874562-00-A" listed as the kit's part number. 1012845-00-A is literally a pack of nuts. I only got written up for the pack of nuts plus 1582613-00-A, which...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

It does, but there's no part listed for it other than 4 nylock nuts. I think I've seen other writeups in this thread that show a HW3 computer unit for MS/MX in the parts list.

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I've either gotten lucky or unlucky because I dropped off my MCU1 AP2.0 Model S on Friday at a Bay Area location and they are actively working on the car. I am getting a Software Update push notification this morning though I can't see anything else. Interestingly they wrote up my car this...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I managed to get a confirmed appointment in the bay area this Friday. FSD + MCU2 upgrade for AP2.0 S100D.
  46. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

That's how it works at every company I've worked at. Asking a group of employees to work some extra hours to fix a bug on some older hardware is basically free to the company.
  47. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

Yes totally!!! I would go one step further and say I would even accept a trade up to a HW2.5/HW3 vehicle and they can sell mine as an EAP car. Like many others here I bought my AP2 Tesla because I believed in the vision. I knew at the time it was only capable of bouncing between two lines at...
  48. C

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

They don't seem to care much about that. HW3 In firmware still looks like AP2 Camera and radar. You can argue for the less than 50k AP2 cars they sold with FSD it's cheaper to just make them disappear to unify the fleet around AP2.5 sensors.

Service Center and NO Loaners - Only Uber

I'm not convinced purchasing a vehicle comes with any implied availability, this kind of argument is more or less like you got a SLA with your car, which would be great. Most of what I've seen for a car warranty is that they are responsible for fixing your car in a "reasonable" manner on their...

Is it me or is FSD/AP much better on 2020.4.1?

In general I am also seeing much less ping ponging on 2020.4.1 and the car does better at staying in its lane on shallow curves when before it would get close to the lane lines for no good reason on 2019.40.50. In the city it can cross intersections (without lines) at low speeds more reliably...
