12v battery died while main battery was fully charged and car plugged in to charger

I don’t know if the car specifically avoids charging the 12V while plugged in, that would be weird. But it did turn out to simply be a dying 12V battery, complemented by the Tesla software doing a poor job of keeping track of the battery health, or rather not really tracking it whatsoever.

12v battery died while main battery was fully charged and car plugged in to charger

Thanks for the responses. It's a 2018 100D. The manufacture date was Octoberish I think. I don't know about MCU1 or MCU2. Since jumping the battery last weekend, it's been able to wake up every time since. So the 12v battery is not trashed. All signs point to DC to DC problem.

12v battery died while main battery was fully charged and car plugged in to charger

Thanks... and ugh... I was hoping for an unfortunate answer like the 12v only charges when the car is on and hence since I left it sitting there for 6 days without waking it up or anything that it was going to just steadily lose charge. But if it’s constantly monitoring even when the car is not...

12v battery died while main battery was fully charged and car plugged in to charger

Seems the actual question is still not clear and perhaps my fault for phrasing the topic the way I did. What are the conditions under which a charge is applied to the 12V battery on a 2018 Model S and what are the subsequent conditions under which the charge is stopped? That’s all I’m asking.

12v battery died while main battery was fully charged and car plugged in to charger

I understand, winter is hard, batteries die. Ive had to replace 12v batteries in cars before. Had to replace one on my last Honda Civic in the dead of winter, mainly because it only got charged when the alternator ran and never charged when just sitting there turned off the difference, and...

12v battery died while main battery was fully charged and car plugged in to charger

Sure, batteries fail. Not really the point of the question. but the battery is still working, a day later, after being jumped and presumably charging back up after I drove the car and had it on for a while and charged the main battery again. the 12v battery can obviously hold enough charge to...

12v battery died while main battery was fully charged and car plugged in to charger

Drive my 2018 Model S on Jan 2nd. Plugged it back in to charge that same day with main battery down to about 50% and target charge level set to 70%. Went to drive it last night and the 12v battery was dead. Jumped the 12v battery and when the computer powered on it showed the main battery at...

Just ordered my Model S - Any things to lookout for?

For 100 miles trips, just leave it at 70% max charge. That’ll be plenty in any weather. As for things to look out for, it’s really really fast, so look out for that.

How do I tell whether I have premium connectivity?

And bringing it actually full circle, the car still has streaming audio and satellite maps and all that. Seems like it fell through their system. I suppose I’ll have free premium connectivity until whenever they do another audit like the one that resulted in them pulling FSD from that one...

How do I tell whether I have premium connectivity?

Bringing this full circle, I got an email from Tesla yesterday telling me the premium connectivity free trial ends in 7 days. Still don’t have any connectivity options showing up under my account on Tesla.com. Still hoping they mess up and leave it enabled indefinitely, guess I’ll find out in 6...

How do you filter/ignore sentry events?

Got my first Tesla about a month ago. Enabled sentry mode as it seemed logical to do. Of course, I've since found out there is no way to watch the clips saved to the USB drive by sentry mode from the car's touch screen, that you have to plug the USB drive into something that can play the video...

How do I tell whether I have premium connectivity?

Bought from Tesla. As they state, there’s a 30 day trial, but usually, that’s the sort of thing you opt in to in order to start the 30 days, as opposed to it arbitrarily starting from some date that was unknown to me (and hence ending at some inopportune unknown date). Guess I’ll find out I...

    How do you decide? Regrets?

My 2 cents, you mentioned you don’t have a long highway drive and thought performance might then be a waste... I mean, it’s not like you get on the highway and are accelerating 0-60 constantly. The regular S is plenty fast for me and everyone else that regularly drives an ICE that’s ever gone...

How do I tell whether I have premium connectivity?

Under upgrades in the app, the eligible section is empty and the purchased section only has autopilot and full self driving listed.

How do I tell whether I have premium connectivity?

Took deliver of a used late 2018 Model S this past weekend. I can stream music while driving around, which I understand to be a premium connectivity feature. But when I login to my Tesla account and view the details for the vehicle, there is no mention of connectivity, standard or premium...

    Premium Connectivity

That’s a fantastically jerky comment. But I couldn’t help from laughing really out loud.

What's the likelihood we will see Speed Limit Sign recognition?

Just want to add that reading speed limit signs isn’t sufficient on its own. If you turn into a street, there’s a good chance there is no speed limit sign immediately visible. In that case you either know the speed from having driven the road before (I.e. saved speed limits in the car) or you...

Losing charge while car is plugged in

I’m not the most frequent driver. I parked my car Saturday night and plugged it in. It charged from about 50% to 75%, the limit I have set for charging. I opened the Tesla iPhone app today and it shows my battery charge is now at 73%. It’s been plugged in this whole time. I would have...

Any urgency for FSD HW3 update?

Sorry if this has been asked recently, searched the forum for "FSD" and "HW3" and couldn't find a recent post about this. I recently bought a used late 2018 Model S with FSD. It has (I think) HW 2.5. It's eligible for the HW3 update. Are there any features that are currently available in...

    Choosing NEW vs. CPO HELP!

Not your specific situation, but I opted for a used, fully loaded, 2018 model S 100D with 18K miles on it instead of a new long range model S. The cost for the new car with the same options was going to be about 20K more and I had no concerns with the used car given the relatively low mileage...
