    Superchargers in Australia

I've heard that in the UK, caravan parks are cutting down on using site plugs to charge EV's. They probably don't have the gigantuan caravans we have that regularly suck down the full 15 amps running the fridge, plasma tv and air conditioning, so maybe the parks over there don't have the supply.

State based proposed EV road user charge

Tolls are the answer if you go for the extreme user-pays scenario, which is the justification for the EV odometer tax. However I agree with you. Road maintenance should, and does, come out of general revenue. Fuel excise is a tax on pollution and foreign imports of fuel. Ie a carbon tax. And...

    Superchargers in Australia

Someone mentioned this earlier, but its hard to believe the EV charging vendors (NRMA, chargefox, Evie) dont have SLA's with their chargers manufacturers. Any more than a day outage would breach most IT contracts in most other industries.

    Superchargers in Australia

All good reasons, and not likely to change quickly, but charging to 100% is only going to make the congestion worse. All the more reason to buy a Tesla.

    Superchargers in Australia

Tesla Tom just put out a YouTube video of Atto3 from Sydney to Melbourne on the Hume highway, and he took a very conservative approach of rarely going below 50%, and charged up to 100% every time he stopped. Its not going to bode well, if the EV evangelists are advocating charging to 100%.

State based proposed EV road user charge

The fuel excise also has an effect of helping out balance of trade. By raising the cost of fuel, thereby reducing the amount consumed (economics 101) we lessen the amount of fuel we need to import. Electricity is only domestically produced, so not relevant to an excise or levy for the above reason.

State based proposed EV road user charge

In a true user pays system a truck would be paying 100x the per km rate a car should considering the damage they do to roads.

    They aren't.
  9. G

State based proposed EV road user charge

Which begs the question about what the fuel excise or EV tax trying to achieve?. A tax has to have a reason. Fuel excise is probably designed to reduce road use, congestion and pollution. I'm not sure it actually stops people driving to be honest. EV's don't polute, so if the tax goal is to...

State based proposed EV road user charge

Over 30% of the national car fleet is under 5 years old. Self reporting is cumbersome and error prone. Tolls can be targeted and has zero operational cost and no errors.

State based proposed EV road user charge

Irrespective of who imposes it, a odometer based tax system will be a nightmare to enforce once EV's become more common, or it's applied to all cars. The administration costs must be through the roof compared to other user-pays taxes. Just a dumb tax. Why don't we look at how other countries...

    Queensland Electric Highway

Sydney to longreach is now possible in a Tesla model 3 long range in two long days up via Bourke and Charleville. Saving a full day in travel. Biggest stretch between DC chargers is Bourke to Charleville. 460km . You could top up over breakfast in cullamulla on 3 phase.

I took inspiration from this thread and mapped out where my electrons came from across the states when I went to Darwin during winter. Even with a fair bit of coal generation, and EV produced half the co2 of a petrol car for the whole trip

    South Australian EV Subsidy

I can't speak for SA, but in NSW delivery and order fee don't count. The limits are the price you pay which stamp duty is calculated off.

It's not a fight between wind and solar. I think the takeaway from the video is that you need more capacity, like 4x more than current coal based, and the most scalable, and lowest cost is solar, and the upshot of that is that most of the time you have 2x more power than you need ("superpower")...

National and State Renewable Energy stats

That's why you need a 90 hour battery. So at night, you really only need 12 hours of battery. The economics don't quite translate to domestic, but let's say you applied it to your house. Total kWh / year divided by 365, let's say 15kwh. Then, solar to produce 60kwh/day (4x) on a sunny day...

National and State Renewable Energy stats

It would be interesting if he profiled Australia for his SWB cost curve. My impression was that solar was still dropping in costs, was potentially more reliable than wind.... Because even on a cloudy day if you have 4x generation capacity, you still only need 25% Vs sunny day.

SA probably had the best on shore wind of any state. I think he favours solar because it's so incredibly cheap

I love this thread, and I came across this rethink disruptive talk on you tube about how easily and quickly solar, wind and battery (SWB) will replace the current grid. There is no need for other technologies.

Road Trip Report: Sydney to Gregory & Greaves Corner and Lightning Ridge

Hey, I did about 12,000 km on a recent trip from Sydney to Darwin and back, and never really felt I had a handle on what range my model 3 LR really had. I agree. On diesel, its a good deal. Interesting though, a mega-caravan using a powered site running its air-condition, fridge, big screen plasma, only get charged about $35 for a site. If they drew 15ams for 12 hours. That would 40kw, so a bargain for them. The issue is that an hourly rate...

25c / kwh is the standard NT flat rate. Not many time of use meters out here. NT has a very interesting "grid". There is a natural gas pipeline from the fields below Alice springs which runs all the way up to Darwin. Various mini-grids tap off this gas line and run gas generators to produce...

'Tiff', yes. Check out her plug share review of kings canyon. They wanted $20/hr or $200/charge! Any grid connected place is paying about 25c/kwh. So at $10/Hr, a model 3 pulls 10kw =. $1/kwh. A 400% markup! Eventually these places will get proper metered chargers
