Get some Sense... [sense monitoring solution]

Isn’t it easier to configure inverter to have no export to the grid? I did not realize that there are electric utilities that charge customers for exported electricity.

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

I see that this smart meter has alternative view of data that is activated by placing a magnet in right upper quadrant. manual: GE I-210+c Smart Grid Meter Product Description and Operation, Maintenance, and Upgrade Instructions.pdf

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

July house consumption in Tesla app shows 2400KWh. It is a huge increase from previously observed 600-1400. Daily consumption graph for July 20th and 21st has -2KW base with 7.2KW spikes for around 40-50 minutes. I assume that it is single stage AC activated by thermostat. 7200W - 2000 W (base...

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

@TradeDC , How many PWs do you have in your system? @Redhill_qik , I do not think electricity consumption increase level can be explained by having house light bulbs on more than before. The increase is too large for that.

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

it might be easier if you share all 4 tabs (house, solar, PW and grid) for one sunny day when PV production is higher than average.
  6. W

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

actually data does not lineup. Meter readings show 8 KWh for July 20th and around 35KWh July 30th and 31st. Tesla does not have dip on 20th and readings for 30/31 are much higher than low number, 39.
  7. W

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

I cannot makes sense out of these charts. i do no see how house manages to consume every single KW of power while PV is operational in summer. At the same time chart shows minimal exporting for a few days only in mid July. Is it possible that Tesla configured inverter for non exporting option...

Can you add home consumption (house icon) and PV production (sun icon) views for the same period?

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

I have a different model of meter so my codes might not match yours but here is my sequence: 4 5 6 7 10 888 If you call electric company customer service and get CSR who knows solar customers they would be able to help you to read your meter‘s counters. I called my electric company only once...

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

The meter reading on the bill stayed at “high watermark” from prior meter, which is very confusing to customers. It might stay at this HWM for several years before new meter gets to 42092 KWh. iI we ignore importing counter carry over from old meter to new one there is still something that is...

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

I doubt that you get a lot of economic benefit from PWs, especially in winter, so no loss in changing PW reserve to 100%. It will simplify the system by eliminating one variable. I forgot all I-210 meter codes. I think importing meter reading is 04 and exporting is 10. There are 5 or 6 counters...
  12. W

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

Numbers in picture make more sense since electricity consumption reading starts from zero around July 14th (presumably bidirectional meter installation date). Export number is suspect since 12 KWh for whole month in July is ridiculously small. What did you set PWs reserve level to? Lower reserve...
  13. W

My utility bills went up after installing solar panels and home energy usage is doubled based on Tesla app

Sorry, silly question. Did electric company install bidirectional meter? Regular meters count electricity export as debit. Take a look at Tesla app while PV production is measurable and exceeds house consumption and compare number for export in app with what meter shows. Bidirectional meters...

Solar installation shutting down in certain markets.

Tax credit year is driven by PTO date. If system is installed mid Dec it is not very likely that it will fully approved before the end of the year.

Connected Solutions Real-World Experiences (MA - National Grid / EverSource)

Pricing in the program is rather unusual. It does not use amount of electricity (kWh) but average rate of feed (kw) across all events. I am glad that all events this year are 2 hours, not 3. My recollection is that pricing per kw was the same last year.
  16. W

Connected Solutions Real-World Experiences (MA - National Grid / EverSource)

Not exactly correct but close. With net metering and PV system higher that 10KW there is system benefit charge for “purchased” power so consumed 10KWh followed with 10KWh feed into the grid has $0.06 charge to the customer. Considering that current electricity price for residential EverSource...

Connected Solutions Real-World Experiences (MA - National Grid / EverSource)

My preference is the same as yours but admittedly there is zero financial incentive to follow this model. It is just to lower rather abstract number of power purchase from the grid. My PV system is more than 10KW so I pay $0.006 system benefit charge for each purchased KWh but even with that...

what is a partial home backup?

Grid voltage going outside of norms (not just frequency) does trigger disconnect for at least 5 minutes.

Connected Solutions Real-World Experiences (MA - National Grid / EverSource)

The same here. Ended at 5:20PM when PWs were at 45%. Also looks like there won’t be an event tomorrow since PWs are currently feeding the house.

I think municipalities other than Chicago do not allow Romex wire runs as well. I know that NYC requires conduit.

    Enphase Solar and Powerwall integration

I vaguely recall that Enphase IQ Envoy supports 2 different placements of consumption CT, directly on supply line to load panel and on main supply line from electric meter. In the second case it assumes that solar is the only internal source of power, besides grid, and adjusts readings for...

    Enphase Solar and Powerwall integration

Is it possible that reinstalled consumption Enphase CT has wiring to PWs? In my case I installed Enphase consumption CT inside house breaker panel so reading does not include anything else.

Anyone regret switching to electric heating?

In my case I use 2 separate heat pumps connected to air handlers and heating oil boiler as a backup. I kept boiler off while expected temperature was above 20F but discovered that boiler would not fire up when I tried to run it the first time during heating season. Forecast was calling for...

    Enphase Solar and Powerwall integration

I took screenshots of instant PV production readings in Enphase Toolkit (real-time data feed from Envoy) and Tesla app a few seconds apart. As you can see Tesla had higher readings. In my installation CTs for Tesla and Enphase are about a foot apart on a line going into PV breaker in combiner...

    Enphase Solar and Powerwall integration

Enphase configuration allows to use microinverters or CT for solar production reporting. I doubt that IQ microinverters have rated measuring. I changed my Enphase configuration to use CT and it roughly matches number I get in standalone RGM. every Envoy comes with CT for PV production. House...

Best way to connect 17kW of solar PV to one Powerwall?

I do not think we have supporting evidence that PW activates power curtailment when charging current exceeds known limits. It is known that when SOC reaches high 90s frequency does go up, based on stored configuration.
  29. W

Best way to connect 17kW of solar PV to one Powerwall?

I do not think backfeeding extra 12KW is doable (120% rule for panel). In case of blackout GW disconnects from the grid and uses PV to charge battery. Combined PV power exceeds ability of PW to absorb it and it does not matter if it is connected to GW solar input or main breaker panel. This...

Best way to connect 17kW of solar PV to one Powerwall?

I am afraid it is not possible unless you go with unconventional design.Tesla gateway will have 5KW of solar connected to solar input and your new extension would feed with line side taps into supply line of GW. In case of blackout PV extension would be disabled. You would need 2 separate...

What is your reserve percentage set to and why?

My 2018 Model 3 also had range go down to 279, even though I always used 90% charge limit and used home charger with 40A limit. Mileage was only 11K. Tesla service dismissed this reduction of range. They said that it is acceptable and battery diagnostic did not show any failures. I keep...

I would not do it. AL wiring requires outlets and breakers designed for it and absolutely need torque screwdriver to tighten wire.

need help with system design review (9.6kW Solar + Powerwall)

Usually this orientation is called portrait and nothing is wrong with it. I think it is more common than the alternative, landscape, Tesla selected for the initial design. Unlike most other solar installation companies Tesla does not give options for panel sizes, like using 60 cell or 72 cell...

need help with system design review (9.6kW Solar + Powerwall)

Unfortunately you do not have enough space on South plane of the roof for all panels. We do not know your regional setback requirements and exact roof measurements but in a nutshell your goal is to place as many panels on south side as possible. Tesla is not going to volunteer to play with...

    Gateway 2--How do they work?

It all depends on definition of “to back up circuits”. If definition is to provide voltage to all circuits with 30A or lower rating it is one thing. The other definition is provide backup power to all 30A and lower rating circuits as long as power draw does not exceed breakers limit. Gateway...

Mini Spare For Model 3, Hyundai Genesis 18" works

What about a centering ring? All non OEM wheels I bought came with a centering ring. My understanding is that bolts are not intended to provide lateral support.

    Powerwall humming noise

I suspect that you cannot rely on feedback from other PW owners. Noise comes from thermo controlled fan and pump. since other people might have PW in different locations/conditions their feedback might be very different with what you would be getting. My PWs are in the basement with temperature...

Discrepancy between Gateway solar CT and Enphase

It is not entirely accurate. Enphase allows to configure PV production using CT or aggregate of microinverters reading. I configured mine to use CT. Enphase CT is rated to be used as RGM so it should be more accurate.
  40. W

Connected Solutions Real-World Experiences (MA - National Grid / EverSource)

I just received a check from EverSource, which was somewhat unexpected since payment for prior season came from Tesla. My understanding is that utility company pays to Tesla which takes 20% for intermediation services and forwards the rest to the customer.

Where does Tesla app solar production data come from?

Typically there is Tesla’s solar production CT on wiring into a combiner panel from PV system.

Losing connection to Tesla Gateway 2 when using Ubiquiti Amplifi mesh network

I use dedicated IOT 2.4 WiFi with UDM Pro and AC Pro For GW2. It is very stable. The only network options that are on are BSS transition, Multicast enhancements and Optimize IOT WiFi connectivity (cannot recall activating last option. Most likely it is a default value in recent versions).

Microinverter compatibility vs. # of cells in PV module

I think Enphase was trying to oversimplify compatibility of microinverters and since there was a lot commonality for max voltage and current between different models of panels with the same numbers cells it almost worked. Now there are some 60 cell panels that are not compatible with IQ7 because...

    Clearing snow from panels

I use car windshield squeegee attached to a telescopic pole. Since my roof is not steep I also commonly use backpack leaf blower, if snow is fluffy. It is always better to clean the snow off as soon as possible. One year we had snowstorm, it got warmer for a few days and after that it became...

    Enphase Solar and Powerwall integration

In my case Tesla reports PV production that is typically 5% higher than Enphase readings and consumption that is 10% higher than Enphase. Unfortunately my grid voltage is a bit too hot. Most of the time it is 248V-249V. I speculate that Tesla calculations include voltage in calculations while...
  46. W

    Enphase Solar and Powerwall integration

I think in your case current limit affects ability of PWs + PV to provide power to the house including EV charging. Two PWs would give around 40A limit. Depending on max car charging rate it might not have enough current for AC, if timing is not right. It all depends if the goal is to have power...
  47. W

    Enphase Solar and Powerwall integration

I do not have a problem that you describe. My Tesla and Enphase solar production CTs are on wires going into combiner panel that combines PW lines and solar. CTs are separated by 6”-8”. My Enphase consumption CT is on the wire going into main panel. There was some simple configuration when...
  48. W

    Enphase Solar and Powerwall integration

PW creates micro grid that Enphase microinverters see as regular grid AC. Power from PV feeds the house and charges PWs. Once battery SOC is around 95% (I think) PW bumps up AC frequency (increase level depends on configuration but typically is between 62 and 65Hz) and Enphase IQ microinverters...
  49. W

    Improved off grid behavior

Is it really doable? PW grid frequency increase is the only method to communicate the need to curtail PV power production. Somewhat disappointing that PV industry cannot come up with signaling standard to modulate power production by PV inverters.
  50. W

New Battery - Tesla or Enphase?

I do not believe that it is accurate description of what PW does in off grid mode. Production curtailment when battery gets close to being full by increasing AC frequency and using appropriate grid profile in IQ inverters is not very different from what Enphase battery does. it might be...
