    Tempest TPMS compatibility

I have been considering buying a set of Tempest wheels for my 2017 S. Can anyone positively confirm that the older style TPMS units physically fit in the new style of wheel? I have a good lead on a set off a car that 100% came with the BLE sensors. I don't want a set of wheels I can't attach...

Buying a used Model S - advice needed

If you are looking for a $45k-$50k car, you should hold out a couple more months. If you were cross-shopping a Model 3 of the same price, there is no reason to sacrifice charge rate and longevity just for the looks. You need to wait for a 100D to come into that price range. This will give you...

    2021 Refresh Model S Discussion

You know, we only see each side repeater once. Perhaps it's not that the closeup is weird, but that is has two different repeaters. Perhaps this is more of a "Swatchbook" build. That would also explain the mismatched interior.

    2021 Refresh Model S Discussion

Clearly, this is not a production car. This has probably been on the road for a while. In fact, the very people who took these photos seem to agree with me that this is a 3-6 month old development mule. But let's go over the obvious giveaways. - No defroster. That is something that 100% can...

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

It's an old dev car so it's irrelevant
  7. Saabstory88

    2021 Refresh Model S Discussion

Don't worry, it must be a dev car. There is no chance this is a final build, because it doesn't look like any other build. To the list! - Lower dash is the wrong color, black instead of white - Chrome repeaters cams - No interior camera - Chips on the paintwork, dents, brake dust. Has been on...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

And yet the interaction I predicted did play out... That being said, it is now resolved.

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I was not prepared for the answer: "What price change?" I got this morning
  10. Saabstory88

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I sincerely hope that you are correct, and that I am overreacting. I'll just say that this would be counter to every experience I have had so far with this particular location. I'll know tomorrow morning.

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I actually used to have a great service center in the city I used to live in. Its just this group that likes to cause misery.
  12. Saabstory88

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

My SC will fight me. Legally, if I cancel, can Tesla continue to quote me $2,500 for this repair in the future if they continue to advertise the $1,500 price? That's what it will come down to. Maybe I should make an appoint the next state over.
  13. Saabstory88

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I have not. My question is, if I cancel, and ask again for the service in a month, do the reserve the right to still charge me $2,500?
  14. Saabstory88

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I already hit accept yesterday on the $2500 estimate, but the work isn't until tomorrow. If I cancel the appointment, will I ever be able to take advantage of the $1500 price, or will they always be able to make my price $2,500 because I had at one point accepted that number.

Motor "vibration" at very low speeds - current going around stator?

Yes. We do. In regard to front motor torque, all the graphs I've seen point towards the front motor being only energized when under heavy acceleration or when rear wheel slippage has been detected. This makes sense, as the front motor costs nothing to leave idle, but the rear motor would need...

Motor "vibration" at very low speeds - current going around stator?

Model 3/Y have rear synchonous motors, front induction. Opposite of Model S
  17. Saabstory88

Motor "vibration" at very low speeds - current going around stator?

It's the effect of cogging torque, which is a phenomenon experienced by synchronous motors at low speeds. So you are feeling the rotor "snap" into alignment with the field that the stator is generating.

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

In regards to a discount, there is also this... Clearly the eMMC / Software issue was a design flaw. So wanting a discount is now just about personally getting a better deal, it's the sense that Tesla should lose money for making the design mistake. I believe that people would be more willing...

That appears to be the case. YMMV

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

No. Tuner is still $500 extra.
  21. Saabstory88

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

They probably want a large stock of old units to refurb in advance of any coming MCU1 recall. They are bound to find yellow and bubbling displays, some of which may be under warranty. So no keeping a part which they now need.
  22. Saabstory88

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

Just FYI, my service center is telling me that the there is no more option to pay $2250 to retain the center display.

Holiday update on MCU1/HW3 release notes

I haven't taken a drive yet, just poked around while it was parked, but it seems like most of the new changes that people don't like are not there in the IC?
  25. Saabstory88

    Breathalyzer

It seems like I'd you could mimick having a charge cable in the port, by connecting to the probe pin. This would allow all other functions in the car to work normally, but not let it drive.

NHTSA asks Tesla to recall 158,000 [now 135,000] vehicles for eMMC failure. Voluntary Recall issued

Just got 2020.48.35 this morning. Fewer animations in the menus, toys are slower, but Map, Nav, Music, and Voice commands now work promptly, if with less flourish. Looks like they did just that. Maybe a backport to an lighter version of QT combined with deleting some of the visual frills. The IC...

Holiday update on MCU1/HW3 release notes

I just got the update too. I'm shocked, the MCU responsiveness in the map has actually improved drastically. I just navigated to a destination two states away and it did it in like 10 seconds. And voice commands work now! This was unexpected. Release notes are slow for me too, but that seems to...

NHTSA asks Tesla to recall 158,000 [now 135,000] vehicles for eMMC failure. Voluntary Recall issued

Yeah. I have been holding out as well. I figured that there is no way that FSD will work on the little Tegra in the IC, with 1/6th the GPU power as IC2. But, now that this is going to be a whole thing, and service centers are going to be slammed for months/years, I'm going to bite the bullet...

NHTSA asks Tesla to recall 158,000 [now 135,000] vehicles for eMMC failure. Voluntary Recall issued

It's not a matter of Musk, this is squarely in the realm of VP's and accountants. That being said, if the company doesn't choose to advertise, they can not afford to lose positive word of mouth.

Late 2016 / Early 2017 S Owners: How Are Your Daytime Running Lights Holding Up?

I would love to. This is within my skillset to work on a fix. That being said, even offering money, I have not found anyone who is willing to part with a unit displaying these symptoms.
  38. Saabstory88

NHTSA asks Tesla to recall 158,000 [now 135,000] vehicles for eMMC failure. Voluntary Recall issued

Yeah. The issue is not the "80 million in parts and labor", it's that they would need to double the number of service centers and mechanics to get this done. If they are already at the point where they are so short staffed that SMS only communication is the rule, a real recall will destroy the...

RWD - Noise under acceleration only

So services solution was a whole new rear subframe rather than a bushing? Does that indicate that the bushing is not independently replaceable? At least I'm not at the clunk stage yet.
  40. Saabstory88

RWD - Noise under acceleration only

I have been trying to diagnose a noise on my 55k mi 2018 Mid Range. It has been becoming more apparent over the past 3 or 4 months. Today, I was able to finally get around to checking the torque on the rear suspension components. I also made sure to clear all debris from the aerodynamics. The...

    2017 MCU1, HW2 FSD - should I see anything yet?

If you have FSD, wait. I doubt Instrument Cluster 1 will be able to keep pace with the final software, and they will probably have to replace them for FSD owners. Might be another year, but it seems likely. Since MCU's and IC's are linked, one would follow the other.

Loose driver's seat – considering class action

I have experienced some light rocking in a loaner 90D, with audible noise. While it was not my vehicle, would it still be useful for me to respond to the survey?

    Lumbar support button stopped working

Well, luckily my issue was pretty straightforward. I removed the headrest, via the already well documented procedure, which unlocks the seat backplate. My first step was to locate the lumbar inflator, remove the electrical connector, wait for 5 seconds, and plug it back in. Interestingly, this...

    Lumbar support button stopped working

Great! Thanks. I guess I'll post the teardown and testing procedure when I go through it this weekend. I may remove both seat backshells and make an extension cable to test each seats lumbar with the others power and controls to make sure it's truly dead.

    Lumbar support button stopped working

Can someone who has had this resolved please let me know what service replaced? I have the same issue on my now out of warranty car, and would like to see if it's something I want to tackle.
