Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

That is wicked low usage. My electricity charges are around $550/month. But I have a large house with two ACs, a pool, hot tub, lots of PCs, Tesla, etc.

Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

Setting a minimum monthly amount to be connected to the grid is tricky, but I don't think that it is illegal to go off-grid. In the US you have some states where they have been upping the account fee. That gives some people an incentive to leave the grid. But the grid still costs the same...

Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

Agreed on the other charges, but when you are just talking about moving your consumption from one hour to another due to your rate plan then you only have to consider the difference in rates as you will be paying those delivery charges in either case.

Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

I don't think installing batteries is illegal. I am pretty sure that people have been installing the Tesla Powerwall for a few years, primarily for use as a battery backup for your house. You should be able to just charge it overnight and then discharge during the peak period. The problem...

Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

Try emailing H1 and see if they can provide you with your hourly usage data. But if you are in Toronto are you with H1 or Toronto Hydro? With Toronto Hydro when I was under TOU I could get my usage by rate bucket, but that isn't granular enough to be able to calculate if you with save with...

Supercharger - Toronto, ON - Don Mills Road

This is mentioned on the mall's website; CF Shops at Don Mills | Visitor Information Electric Vehicle Charging Station Need to power up? Now you can charge your vehicle while you shop. CF Shops at Don Mills is equipped with one level 3 DC Flo fast charger (CHAdeMO & CCS Combo) and two level 2...

    Supercharger - Napanee, ON

Obviously more SCs is better than none. Yesterday was likely one of the busiest days of the year as it was a long weekend and you had people dropping their kids off at Queens University, etc.

    Supercharger - Napanee, ON

But the stretch from Port Hope to Odessa, even without Napanee, is littered with SCs - there are four (Port Hope, Cobourg, Trenton, Belleville) in that 137km stretch that are all very close to the highway.. Napanee makes it five. And in the 51km stretch east from Odessa to Gananoque there are...

    Daytime running lights

The law came into effect on Dec 1, 1989. So any car less than 34 years old should have them.

Canadian Superchargers now charge per kWh

What is the motivation for this? Are they just doing a fixed markup on their wholesale electricity rates? Or are they trying to change charging behaviour? If it is the latter I wonder if they will have different pricing strategies for SCs in cities/towns vs those that are on highways and are...

    Daytime running lights

Why do you see so many cars driving around Canada without DRL? You see a fair number of cars with Canadian plates.
  12. wayner

Canadian Superchargers now charge per kWh

Anyone know what the wholesale prices would be in BC that Tesla is paying? Tesla probably has a margin that they apply at SCs, and haven't SCs in the US been charging by the kWh for a few years?
  13. wayner

Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

Can Tesla's do bidirectional charging? I didn't think they could. When we have a large EV fleet with all bidirectional cars it really could be a game-changer for the use of renewable energy as there will be so many grid connected batteries in the form of EVs to provide storage. I would be...

Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

By my calculation if you have an appliance that uses 1kW and it runs 24x7 then on a weekly basis under TOU it will cost $16.14 and with ULO it will cost $15.32. That is only the variable usage cost as it ignores other charges that are the same under either pricing system. So even ignoring...
  15. wayner

Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

Why wouldn't these rates encourage you to start at 11 if you went to ULO? You would be saving $0.05/kwh. Yes it is higher from 5-9, but that may be offset by the savings overnight. But that may depend on how much electricity you use from 7-9pm on weekday nights as there is a huge rate...

Ottawa to Burlington VT road trip planned

Besides being too close to Ottawa, it is also an indirect route as the 417 is the most direct route so you aren't on the 401 through Cornwall, you are a bit north of there.

Ontario overnight ultra low rate announced

Looks the same as Toronto Hydro. The one thing I wonder about is the On-peak period. Is it from 4-9 because they want to reduce demand during those hours or because they think they can recapture more revenue? From May 2022- April 2023 here are the top 10 demand periods. Date Hour Ending...

Ottawa to Burlington VT road trip planned

That's the Google Maps route. But look at where the SCs are located - you either have to go onto the island of Montreal or up to Brossard. Once you leave Montreal there are no SCs unless you go to Plattsburgh. But then you are on the wrong side of the Lake. What route would you propose?

Canadian Superchargers now charge per kWh

Interesting - thanks. Is there any rhyme or reason for starting this at Etobicoke, but not at their other sites? Would this just be a test case?

Canadian Superchargers now charge per kWh

As a point of comparison, TOU rates are .074,.101,.151 plus additional charges for distribution, transmission, etc that I think are around .05. These may not be similar to what Tesla pays to Toronto Hydro as they are likely paying commercial rates.

Ottawa to Burlington VT road trip planned

There actually aren't many on the direct route, unless you want to count Casselman which is too close to Ottawa. That will change when some of the suburban Montreal SCs get built. But if you go on the east side of Lake Champlain you miss the Plattsburgh SC and don't hit one until you get to...

Supercharger - Mississauga, ON - N Service Road

When SCs are coming soon and not yet open I think they always show up in the middle of the city name on Google Maps. That is likely the case here - it is just called Mississauga for now and is pinned to the city name.

    Supercharger - Napanee, ON

Good to see - this one was taken much longer than all of the other new sites that we have seen between Toronto and Gan. Now we just need Brockville to finally get built.

Ottawa to Burlington VT road trip planned

It seems to be about 350km - can you not do that without charging? There don't seem to be any SCs that well positioned on the most direct route - other than once you get to Burlington.

Canadian Superchargers now charge per kWh

I think you missed a 0 - as in $0.0939 rather than $0.939. And if you switch to the Ultra Low price in Ontario you can charge for $0.024/kWh, but your peak prices go up. Note that these prices also do not include various other surcharges for distribution, transmission, etc, that are generally...

    "Center Display Unavailable" message

I just got this display this morning. My car was delivered in January 2015, I had the LTE upgrade and they had to replace the entire MCU at that time, but that was a long time ago - about 2016. I am pretty sure that I have had the eMMC upgrade as well. My car took a while to boot up this...

    Atlantic Canada Superchargers

I don't think you ever see Tesla comment around specifics on stuff like this. I wonder if Tesla has anyone working for them that even understands the nuances of the travel routes in Nova Scotia.

    Atlantic Canada Superchargers

There are SCs in NS, but they are just not in the northern part of the province. If you go from NB to Halifax then you will hit the one at Elmsdale. But they should have them in New Glasgow or Antigonish, and also on Cape Breton.

New 2.4c/kw Ultra low rate 11pm to 7am for Ontario

For sure. I would really like to see it simplified so that you could see what the fixed monthly rate is and what the variable cost is, factoring in all rebates, etc.
  37. wayner

New 2.4c/kw Ultra low rate 11pm to 7am for Ontario

I could be wrong, but I thought that those other rates were a lot more than 2c/kWh. The transmission fee alone is 1.89c/kWh, at least for Toronto where I am. The other fees are confusing as some are fixed amounts per month and some are per kWh.

Any other Model S having issues with network connectivity/streaming audio?

My car is a 2015 Model S P85D. I paid to upgrade from 3G to LTE several years ago. But I still have the original MCU. I continually have trouble with LTE connectivity and streaming audio. I think that there are two issues - (1) the handoff from Wifi to LTE when I leave home, and (2) random...

    Supercharger - White River, ON

Thanks - I thought that the stretch was longer than that. Even my 8 year old Model S P85 can make that, at least in summer. Might be a different story in -30C weather, though.

    Supercharger - White River, ON

What happens when a place like White River goes down. Do Teslas have to stay there until it gets fixed? I can't imagine you have a lot of other options, L1 or L2? Find a campground or welding shop?

New 2.4c/kw Ultra low rate 11pm to 7am for Ontario

Another thread here: Ontario Ultra Low Overnight rates are now live Don't forget that 2.4c does not include the transmission, distribution and other tariffs that add about 6c/kWh. Those are irrelevant if you are just shifting usage from other times to the overnight period. But if you are...

    Car washes in the GTA?

Funnily enough, I just went through an Esso car wash at Pt Union and Kingston Road that was not a touchless car wash. And this is a popular site with Teslas as it is the spot of the Scarborough Supercharger - the chargers are right between the pumps and the car wash.

We're going to need a lot more SuperChargers soon

Tesla announcing the doubling of their network and doing it are two very different things. Cybertruck deliveries begain in late 2021, didn't they? The logistical process of doing that takes a fair bit of time with lots of third parties involved. Even just doubling existing sites may not...

We're going to need a lot more SuperChargers soon

This is a good point. Where are the charge ports on existing Ford and GM vehicles? Is the Tesla SC cable long enough to reach those spots. Looking at some other EVs that have their charge ports between the wheel and the drivers door I wonder if the cable is long enough? Especially if there...

We're going to need a lot more SuperChargers soon

It doesn't but Tesla has been building them for about a decade and I don't know that Ford or GM have built any yet. Plus the third party chargers are pretty unreliable as they are out of service WAY more often than Tesla SCs. And some of us get free Supercharging. I doubt we would get that...

We're going to need a lot more SuperChargers soon

Now that GM has joined Ford in adopting the Tesla charging connector, we are going to need Tesla to scale up the SC network once GM and Ford start selling significant numbers of EVs, especially when you consider all of the new Teslas also joining the EV fleet. I wonder if Tesla has planned for...
