Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Munro's tear downs of the Model 3 & Y were fascinating glimpses into how cars are manufacturers, despite the occasional flubs about technical stuff. He's started talking about doing a tear down of the CyberTruck, as well, and I'll watch all of that content when and if it occurs.

    Yoke vs Steering

Definitely prefer the yoke - yeah, I still occasionally tag the wrong turn signal button, but it's rarer and rarer for that to happen. Biggest transition was hand-over-hand turns but that problem went away once I started using the undersides of the yoke crossbars more effectively. And lightly...

What to do with your Model S when you remove a tire

I'm in the part of the country where we need snow tires, so I bought a full set (wheels & tires) from Tirerack. When I had to repair a tire recently (screw), I just put on one of the snows while I worked. If you don't have a set, I'd suggest buying a suitable used wheel & tire somewhere...

Route planners with waypoints and battery level thresholds?

I've used EVTO-Tesla on my iPhone for several years to plan long distance (transcontinental) trips. It excels at creating multi-day segmented trips by letting you set your "nominal" leg length (i.e., 9 hours) and displaying where that puts you in the route. I've also tried using ABRP for this...

She posted her question on Twitter - and it it was such a damp squib that I'm glad that she was spared the embarrassment. Paraphrasing - Did Birdco have a written contract to poach Tesla's software engineers, and was that ethical? Likely answer: (trimmed, as it was both wrong and covered in an...

Tesla Y Back windows open occasionally on their own?

Had this happen randomly a couple of times in our 2022 Model S - we'd plug into a Supercharger, go into the store, and then receive a "window is open" notification in the app. Different windows, partially or completely open, no obvious pattern - it was very puzzling. We raised a Service issue...

Supercharger idle fees.... How do we charge THIS clown?

Supercharger idle fees.... How do we charge THIS clown?

We went through here a couple of times in November, and the hotel folks seemed nice enough - let us have some coffee (after we asked nicely, of course). Surprised there wasn't anyone at the desk - and that they've done such a piss-poor job of clearing the snow around the stalls. I'd be inclined...

    Wall Charger tripping adjacent Breaker

It looks like the breaker melted at the bus bar connection, so I'm wondering whether the exposed bus bar there had become weathered/corroded/dirty over the years. I'm surprised that the 60-amp breaker didn't trip thermally if it was radiating enough heat to trip the GFCI breaker next to it...

    CCS Adapter - ?

Here's an oddball question - can the Tesla CCS adapter be used at a J1772 charger in place of the "pure" J1772 adapter we've all been carrying around for years? I'd have thought it could be (CCS being a superset of the J1772), but the manual doesn't mention anything about it.

Which Snow-Chain are you using with your Model S?

Yeah - I used Z-chains on my 2014 Model S for a few years, and *always* had to carefully check the far side of the tire after they were installed to make sure the inside cable was against the tire and not hung up on that control arm. Remembering to perform that step while in a night-time...

Which Snow-Chain are you using with your Model S?

I decided to spring for those König chains from Tesla for my 2022 S (after having used Z-chains on my 2014 S). Unfortunately, I had to send them back after I learned that when Tesla says "The fitting system has been pre-configured for Model S 19" Wheels", means that it will *only* fit on...

    Best to charge to 60%?

An alternative strategy, based on my "nerfed" early 2014 P85 (103,000 mi) with 248 mile max range (265 miles, at birth): Daily use: charge to 90%, then let day-to-day use "walk it down" to roughly 20%. Rinse; Repeat. Trips: Set limit to 100% and "Time of departure" to around the planned...

Shipping advice for wheels. With or without tires? Which carrier?

If that's the total, sounds like a good deal. What brought the idea to mind is having my local tire shop accidentally punch through the sidewall on my Pirelli Sottozero 3 snow tires - on two separate occasions. Leaves a nice, clean rectangular cut...

Shipping advice for wheels. With or without tires? Which carrier?

(Just so it's clear, I meant to cut circumferentially around the tire in the sidewall area, not inward radially toward the wheel rim - which would be dumb). Just in case that was the reason for the downvote... 🤷‍♂️
  30. snellenr

Shipping advice for wheels. With or without tires? Which carrier?

Since the tires are trash, cutting through the sidewalls (where there's no wire reinforcement) with a reciprocating saw is an easy way to separate the wheels without damaging them.

Convert NEMA 14-50 60 amp line to Hard Wiring Wall Connector

Note to all electricians reading this: Yes, this is totally and absolutely approximate and SWAG-ish. :) I see what looks like a "THHN" in the first picture and found charts that show the *total* diameter (including insulation) for THHN #4 & #6 wires. Although there are some minor (0.00x")...

Convert NEMA 14-50 60 amp line to Hard Wiring Wall Connector

Hence the "wire nut" part of the suggestion, but I'd still disconnect & wire nut the neutral wire in the panel so there's no question of a panel issue resulting in a hot wire at the other end. There's not a lot of extra space inside the wall connector for an unused #4 neutral wire and wire...

Convert NEMA 14-50 60 amp line to Hard Wiring Wall Connector

It looks doable, but I have some "not an electrician but have installed a wall charger" thoughts/observations. Assuming the wire is 4/3 NMI (Romex): Make certain that it isn't aluminum wire - it's cheaper and your current box may allow it, but Tesla's doesn't Splices in 4 gauge wire aren't...

The relationship is comparable to that of McDonald's Corp. and its franchisees. Tesla Service 2013 Tesla model s 60 Rear brake pads are seized in calipers service estimate 1363

This doesn't look particularly out of line - the *main* repair is to replace the rear brake rotors, which they're estimating at taking about an hour @ their $185/hr labor rate ($205 labor). They'd need to unbolt the calipers and move them out of the way to remove the rotor, and they're going to...

In many of the FSD videos on YouTube, the driver will touch somewhere on the display after FSD does something wrong to "capture the event". This is too cute... Also - if you've got the "standard wall plug" adapter plugged into the 30 amp HF adapter, the car will look at the Tesla adapter and say "ok - 15 amps it is!" -- in which case, 12 amps (80% of 15 amps) is exactly what you'd expect.

The 30-amp socket (TT-30) should be 120 volts, not 240, so it's going to be much slower than if you used the 14-50 adapter with your mobile charger. The 14-50 socket is the one on the left side of the panel - you should be able to plug into it with the adapter you described. The 30 & 50 amp...
