    [uk specific] Software 2023.32

I got 32.4 a week or so ago and used the car yesterday on the motorway with AP. Yes, it’s terrible with phantom braking when passing vehicles on the left. It makes it virtually unusable. Do they test this stuff?

Notes from a Small Roadtrip - UK to Norway via Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden

I had problems with both. I tried two high speed chargers and neither accepted simple tap and go card payments. The only non subscription options on offer were card payment via web page (failed because it wanted a Norwegian mobile number), or payment by phone bill (failed for similar reasons).

Notes from a Small Roadtrip - UK to Norway via Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden

I did almost the same trip last Aug. I agree on the Norway charging observations. Despite massive EV adoption, the charging infrastructure, although extensive, is quite fragmented with multiple apps and pay cards. I gave up trying to use non Tesla chargers as a result.

New to the forum - M3 RWD Long range pickup on Monday.

I think the non-premium audio is pretty decent, but the premium system is, by far, the best stock audio system I've ever heard. It certainly beat the pants off the HK system in the i4 that I test drove.

New to the forum - M3 RWD Long range pickup on Monday.

The RWD long range is really the configuration I’d like, but the lower spec audio puts me off. Having the “premium” setup in my LR AWD I’m now completely spoiled when I listen to other stock audio systems.

    [uk specific] Software 2023.32

Trust me, Tesla are a million miles ahead of VW (well, CARIAD, VW’s software division). When I say scheduled charging was broken, I mean totally broken. It just didn’t work at all. For two years either you had to use your charge point to access overnight rates, start the charge manually at...

    [uk specific] Software 2023.32

You want to try VW! Tesla are a paradigm of virtue compared to them. They introduced scheduled charging in rel 2.1 in Dec 2020 and it didn’t work. It got fixed in 3.0 in Q4 2022. Almost two years to fix something basic and important.

    So… Highland is out…

Hmmm - that mail clearly isn't an official Tesla marketing mail (just going by the grammar errors). Plus, the ordering page is just the standard one for the current car. Sounds like some sales guy is taking it upon himself/herself to garner RNs and then dish out deliveries single-handed ("I...

    So… Highland is out…

Or they could just fit a $10 stalk.

    So… Highland is out…

Why? I use dark mode all the time and it's perfectly readable.

Model 3 RWD real world range test

Interesting video - but what struck me was that all three were very close in practically all respects. The reported much lower Wh/mi on the Tesla didn't translate into more range, so it's clear that the stated consumption data is not reliable or comparable between different cars. Of course...

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

Looks like the S3XY button people will have an after-market solution for the lack of stalks on Highland. I think they'll sell a ton of them! https://mailchi.mp/3f834e31644b/s3xy-stalks-coming-mid-2024?e=5ab923cb55

    So… Highland is out…

Seems that the S3XY people will have after-market stalks before too long. https://mailchi.mp/3f834e31644b/s3xy-stalks-coming-mid-2024?e=5ab923cb55

    So… Highland is out…

What surprises me is that Highland is just an LCI (as the Germans would call it - “Life Cycle Improvement”) and not a new car. The Model 3 launched in 2017 so it’s now six years old. Most manufacturers would be moving onto a completely new model in that timeframe - e.g. BMW e46 ran from 1997...

Rumour: Model 3/Y to lose stalks in 2023 model year

It can’t be cost savings given that they’ve added a colour touch screen in the rear passenger area. It’s more likely ideology based on US driving patterns and unrealistic expectations of FSD. It’ll certainly lose sales. I for one am now thinking of holding onto my 2019 3 for a bit longer in...
  18. pdk42

Anyone in the UK 'upgraded' their Model Y suspension?

I’m thinking of doing something to my 2019 Model 3. I’ve lived with its overly hard setup since new but with Highland now stalkless my upgrade path is somewhat less clear so I’m thinking of keeping the 3 longer. An improved suspension setup would be a nice uplift (with perhaps some more sound...

    So… Highland is out…

It must be that the production lines are already set up for RHD then. Guess we’ll see it sooner rather than later. Hmm - so maybe some bargains to come in current models then. Last chance to get indicator stalks!
  20. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

No, not confused by the S/X, but thought the timeline for RHD Highland was later next year. If it's early next year then demonstrators may be arriving sooner than I thought.
  21. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

Unless they are LHD demonstrators, it’s unlikely this will be haapening very quickly.

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

I agree. It works really well at the moment. The best implementation I’ve used in any EV. But a slider on the screen? - no thanks.

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

Another example of a manufacturer making big UI decisions that baffle real users is VW. They removed lots of physical buttons and made those that remain those horrid “haptic feedback” touch things. The universal reaction has been negative, esp from motoring journos. But it seems they have seen...

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

This talk of roundabouts in the US reminds me of when I was living near Boston for a few years in the late 90s. There was one “rotary” in Saugus that I passed wherever I went to/from Logan airport (42.4626760, -70.9654303). I always marvelled at how the Americans handled it. On one occasion, I...

    LTE - 3rd Party apps & connectivity

Agreed. Yet the technician is claiming that the Ovo app communicates *with the car* every 10 seconds ("charger app (Ovo) communicates with the car every 10 seconds").
  26. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

Actually, looked at that way, you have a good point. Everyone knows that the auto wipers just deliver a really bad experience, particularly at night; and that after four years of promised software improvements ("deep rain" - anyone remember that?) it's still bad. Highland would have been a...

    LTE - 3rd Party apps & connectivity

Hmm - I'm a sceptic at heart, so let's pull this apart... You could turn off using a mobile hotspot and see if there's any basis to this. This doesn't sound right. I use Octopus and also TeslaFi. One of the things TeslaFi does is tell you when the car is sleeping and for how long. This is a...
  28. pdk42

    LTE - 3rd Party apps & connectivity

All these "apps" communicate with the Tesla servers and the servers in turn connect with the car. If the car can't get a connection, no amount of app requests to the servers will make any difference. Whoever you've been talking to so far is pulling your chain! I suspect that if connectivity...

    So… Highland is out…

The first two of those will certainly make me pause when mine's up for a change next year. Front camera I really don't care about - why would I want that? Wipers? - yeah, they're not great - but I'm used to it now.

UK : Ditching the 18" Aero Covers

I had my 18" alloys repainted in silver and added the 5-spoke central cover. I think it looks better than the grey that comes as standard. The photo shows them before I added the 5-spoke cover.

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

I fitted a TopFit instrument cluster. The display itself is attached to a replacement cover for the shroud on the steering column. It's a VERY easy job to swap the original for the one on the TopFit display. Unless the design is radically different on Highland (which would surprise me since...

    So… Highland is out…

Hmm. I had quite the opposite reaction. When I drove an S I found it had a sloppy old fashioned feel to it, something someone in their 80s might appreciate. In contrast I found the 3 quite engaging to drive. But I guess these things are subjective.
  33. pdk42

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

I’m sure I’d feel the same. Really stupid design decision.
  34. pdk42

Stalk or no stalk argument settled

Bjorn’s video sums up the frustrations of the stalkless design pretty well. He’s using the yoke, but he spends most of the time talking about the stalkless issues.

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

Yes we would. Stupid ideas transcend who originated them.

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

Well actually, the war of independence was between British settlers loyal to the king and British settlers who weren’t. It was only afterwards that American identity became established. But my original point wasn’t intended to be anti-American (I lived in MA for three years and am quite an...

    So… Highland is out…

Probably. But the claim was that the weight of the car contributed to the cabin noise. This comparison shows that’s not true.
  39. pdk42

M3 Refresh - Are Indicator buttons really poor design?

It’s a stupid design decision. Only an American would even begin to think it was workable. Hopefully there will be a 3rd party add-on that will remedy their stupidity.
  40. pdk42

    Why so few models?

Highland is out. And it’s a pretty mild makeover. So despite Tesla now being the world’s most valuable car manufacturer, there are still only four models, all of which are designs that date back a long time in auto market terms - 2012 for the S/X and 2016 for the 3/Y. The Roadster looks dead...

    Non-Tesla charging sucks

I agree with this. If you look at EV sales, it’s mostly fleet buyers. Private buyers are still sticking with ICE.
  42. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

Fun fact: So, almost no difference in weight when comparing a Model 3 with a BMW 330d. Yet the BMW 330d is quiet!
  43. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

I'd be up for a sound insulation project too. But I fear the problem is transmission through the structure of the car.
  44. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

I guess it's possible. The TopFit instrument binacle I have uses a replacement top cover on the steering column. A similar trick with stalks attached would be possible. Maybe there's hope...
  45. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

Good question. Wouldn't surprise me if all we'll get is remaining inventory and then nothing until the new model arrives. It'll be 2019 all over again...
  46. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

Yeah, me too. Absolutely crazy idea. I'm not wild about losing the drive selector stalk, but the loss of indicator stalks is just insane.
  47. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

The loss of indicator stalks is a real deal breaker for me. I can see me swapping my current Fremont 3 for the last of the current pre-facelift models next year. But then again - no parking sensors. Why do Tesla do this sort of crap - simple things that become huge negatives.
  48. pdk42

    So… Highland is out…

No stalks for indicators - I'm out.
  49. pdk42

[UK] Order now or wait for ‘Highland’

No stalks... I think I'm out.
