If NEM 3.0 then easier to oversize PV?

Wouldn't it be based more on what the transformers and localized grid can handle than how much they will be buying back? Our neighbor was denied solar because there were too many houses on our street that already had solar. If everyone put 150% of their use household use worth of panels on the...

Do you have enough solar to go off grid in winter?

So just having the ability to tilt your panels to align with the winter sun angle will be enough for most people? Of course you would still need to consider the shorter total sunlight hours and weather by region (west coast rainy season is winter, so winter is also has fewer sunny days than...

First Red Flag Warning For The Season (SoCal - 10.28.2023)

Surprisingly got the storm watch notification for my area of LA County. This is the beginning of that time of year for CA. Fall season begins fire season before the winter rains begin. Warm dry offshore winds (Santa Ana winds in SoCal and Diablo Winds in NorCal) drive fires after our long dry...

    Eclipse 2023

Here in SoCal where we were over 1,000 miles from the full eclipse we still had a good drop in solar production by about 1/4 of what it would be during the same time. 9:00am comparing today to yesterday

SCE True Up Credit? NEM 2.0

You only get 1:1 for all grid export matching grid use. Additional export is bought back at whole sale. The -$381.52 shows the net retail value. You only get back the whole sale value of that excess production, which is $96.07. You will continue to have a negative bill until the $96.07 no...

SCE True Up Credit? NEM 2.0

The balance does get rolled over. Each month will be negative until the costs for those months exceed the remaining negative balanced carried over from the previous months. They will end up having about 4 to 6 months of no bill.

    Powerwall Temporary Operation without Gateway

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

I already decided that I am going to add about 4 more panels myself and not let my utility know. Max continuous output for each IQ7 microinverter is 240. So the most additional power that will be going back to the grid will be 960 watts, and this will only be for a short period of time. If I...

Storm Watch For Heat Warning - Why Not?

I noticed that Excessive Heat Warnings are not on the list for severe weather events that trigger Storm Watch. I am wondering why they don't include it? I know in many areas, especially my area where all power lines are underground, we are more likely to lose power during extreme heat than any...

    Hurricane Hilary

With that said. For August, this is a lot of rain. Because it literally doesn't rain here in August. For December through March, this is a typical larger winter storm, minus all the snow in the mountains
  15. skepticcyclist

    Hurricane Hilary

2.96 inches at my place. We have received more during many winter storms. In fact there was at least 5 times we had winter storms drop over 3 inches at my place last winter alone. But we did have a lot of wind Sunday night as the center of the low passed over. Like I stated earlier, the...

    Hurricane Hilary

The concern was always the desert areas. On the coastal side we saw a typical large winter storm rain total. The deserts got more rain than the coast side and some areas got their annual rainfall in one day
  17. skepticcyclist

    Hurricane Hilary

Nice. You too. BTW, which part of Riverside County do you reside in? If you are in desert region east of the mountains, that is the area of most concern. Some of those areas can get over 12 inches of rain. The coastal side of the mountains won't be as bad (the opposite of winter storms)...

    Hurricane Hilary

Just to clarify, I was just informing others that it was updated at that time. I am aware of the difference. We get watches and warnings all the time for wind, flooding, winter storms, and even fires. We in SoCal even had a blizzard warning last year (my profile pic is taken at a ski resort in...

Yeah. They always send this. What is just as bad is when they send the notification that I am currently experiencing an outage with the possible time of restoration after the power has already been restored. Then hours later telling us that it has been restored

    Expected Behavior During Grid Outage

Off grid systems throttle solar output to match usage, I never understood why they wouldn't make grid tied systems do the same during an outage

    Mild Jun in NorCal

With a full sunny day, today we will end up with a net production equal to 3 days worth of net consumption during our last 3 all day June gloom. Just need about another 20 days like today to make up for the loss of production during the last two months of May Gray and June Gloom.

And of course those few sunny hours lasted only a few hours. No sun at all today. Keep in mind, I live 30 miles from the coast and lived here for 50 years. Don't ever recall a May and June gloom this persistent. We will get the occasional all day June gloom, but most of the time it is just...

    SCE Annual True Up Questions

That could have more to do with other variables from one year to another, such as the difference in the amount of energy you used and the difference in the amount of solar production. For example, this past winter was much more cloudy and rainy than the last, resulting in much less solar...

Yeah. More wishful thinking on my part. My electricity and gas are separate companies. I can legally choose to not have gas and cancel SoCal gas without any legal issues. But I cannot choose to not have electricity. I will not be able to call SCE and cancel my electricity while still remaining...

Finally going solar. I have a question about Enphase microinverters and Powerwall compatibility

Depends. For some who may be maxed out on what their inverter can handle, is easy to just add existing panels with microinverters without having to upgrade an existing inverter. Tesla powerwall already has the inverter/rectifier built in. An enphase system has a built in rectifier as well...

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

I would only cut ties with my electric provider only. I would still have to keep gas. All my appliances are gas. I would have to pay tens of thousands more to add 240v outlets (my house has none), upgrade the main panel for these additional breakers, and over double my existing solar panels...

Finally going solar. I have a question about Enphase microinverters and Powerwall compatibility

  46. skepticcyclist

Finally going solar. I have a question about Enphase microinverters and Powerwall compatibility

I have a similar setup. You can monitor with both APPs or just the Tesla APP. Only the Tesla APP will allow you to control the battery. And only the Enphase APP will allow you to shut off solar production. If you go with an Enphase or LG battery then you will control everything with the Enphase...

This flat rate income based proposal will be $85/month for those of us with SCE. With taxes that will come to over $100/month. If this ends up being the case I will end up adding more panels with another battery and go completely off grid.

03-09-2023 - No Stormwatch for Northern CA?

My PW has been going into SW more frequently this year. I wonder if they changed the parameters. It used to only kick in if the warnings were directly in my area. Now SW is kicking in even if the warnings are 30 miles from my area. I have been on storm watch since yesterday for Winter Storm...
