    All discussion of Rivian Automotive

They really should open the RAN sites up to non-Rivians that have plug & charge capabilities. Though it might not matter much to Tesla owners, as the sites I've seen seem to be nearly or co-located with Supercharger sites.

with most cars being able to use Tesla SC will Level 2 AP on other brands make u leave Tesla behind?

Rather than yank the wheel, just move the volume thumbwheel up/down a notch. Moving the cruise speed thumbwheel also works.

    Supercharger - Wilsonville, OR (LIVE 17 Nov 2023, 8 V4 stalls)

The newer cars warm up the battery pack using heat harvested from the stator windings in the motors. That is potentially 7 kW (2 x 3.5 kW) in a dual motor car. Heat from other sources (e.g., PTC heater in a non-heat pump car) for the cabin could get the total up to 10 kW.

Seligman is a great Historic Route 66 stop as well. (Road Kill Cafe, some fun little tourist shops, etc.) It is interesting that four of the top six are now on I-40.

Musing over plugshare today, shows a couple of new DCFCs of interest that are under construction in BC. On the Cassiar, Meziadin Junction: Meziadin Junction (Coming Soon) | Stewart, BC | EV Station. There are ~587 km (~365 miles) between it and Watson Lake. So some low speed charging is still...

    All discussion of Lucid Motors

After watching Lex Fridman interview Jared Kushner on youtube, it struck me how desperately the Saudis are trying to invest in a life after oil. Bankrolling Lucid seems to be one of their pet projects. I can't see Toyota acquiring Lucid. Corporate cultures are far too different.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

The first widely available flat screen TVs (e.g., Philips plasma) in the mid-'90s were like $16k. As prices dropped, CRTs quickly went out of favor. By the early 2000s it was over. The switch to digital TV came about then as well. So a lot of folks were upgrading anyway. We just sent off...

Good call. Maybe around 7:30 PM. So could be one of the ones you saw? I didn't see which direction the Cybertruck came from. He just drove by me as I was charging and eating some dinner. (Harris Express BBQ ran out of brisket two people ahead of me in line. And were out of burnt ends too...

Under its own power. Slow rolled by all of us that were charging, backed into one of the stalls and hooked up. Three occupants. Had the big "RC" decals on it.

I mentioned this in another thread, but will repeat here. Last night I was Supercharging at Harris Ranch, when a "Release Candidate" Cybertruck rolled in. It was incredible watching dozens of folks jump out of their cars, especially the kids, run over and check it out. Lots of photos and...

The major remaining ones I can think of are: VW/Audi/Porsche BMW Toyota/Lexus and Subaru Stellantis Lucid Mazda Jeep and Chrysler have plug in hybrids, but nothing with DC fast charging.

EVs somewhat predated gas cars. They were used as taxi cabs in NYC in the 1890s. The motors and controllers were very similar to, and basically miniaturized versions of, those used in electric trolley cars.

When traveling, do you bother with trying to find hotels with EV charging? Can you depend on them?

Do you have the "one lightning bolt" selection enabled? It shows Destination charging. ("Two lightning bolts" enables showing Tesla Urban and also some EVgo w/Tesla connectors. "Three lightning bolts" enables showing V2 and V3 Superchargers.)

    Route 50 in Nevada

I did it in 2019. Wendover to Ely to Fallon. Then on to Carson City, South Shore of Tahoe, and to Sacramento. There are RV parks with 14-50s, and now real EV charging sites with CCS, CHAdeMO, and J1772 along the way. Let PlugShare be your guide. I intend to do it again when the Ely SC...

Can't you simply buy one from Tesla? Alternatively you could also just buy one ready made from evseadapters. They sell various European adapters that work just like the Tesla ones.

My brother is visiting the area on business. He rented a Polestar 2 from Thrifty - same deal, no info. Fortunately his hotel has some complimentary L2 stations: one Tesla, one Clipper Creek, and a dual head Chargepoint. The Chargepoint was showing error messages... So I showed him how to use...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Very common for tech companies. It is a reason some like to work for startups for relatively little pay. If the company is eventually successful the stock is worth a fortune. "Bill and Dave" (Hewlett and Packard) were early proponents of such compensation. One of the benefits is to spread...

"Treasury stock". Tesla, like most corporations, is authorized by their shareholders to issue some high number of shares, but have only issued some fraction of that. They can then issue more to the market to raise cash. Or use some to compensate their employees.

Back in about 2009, a friend/neighbor of mine who was an early Tesla employee (now retired) and I were driving to Los Angeles. He'd been telling me how the Roadster owners had set up a bunch of charging stations for long distance driving - including one at Harris Ranch. We stopped there for...

Mine had the 5-cyl gas engine w/auto transmission. My first fuel injected car in an era when almost all cars had smog-choked carb engines. When the 60 Minutes hit piece came out, and Audi sales crashed, I figured I could probably get a deal on a new one. Headed over to my local Porsche+Audi...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Back in the mid-'80s, I owned an '81 Audi 5000S. One of the nuances of that car was the drivers floor mat would gradually slide forward enough that it would start to jam the gas pedal. Solution? Reach down, pull the mat back, and it would be good again for a few more weeks/months. When the...

California charges $150/year, and many other states are doing similar. Does stink if you have an EV that doesn't get driven much - if at all. (Thinking about the 1916 Detroit Electric that is on display at a nearby museum. It only occasionally gets driven around the museum grounds - so might...

Harris Ranch superchargers powered by diesel generators??? Really?

There are major power transmission lines (Path 66 - Wikipedia) running the length of that part I-5. It would be silly for Tesla to run their own Diesel generators for anything but emergency/temporary power.

Yes on the phase. Signaling protocol is the same. The T2->T1 adapters seem common in Europe and elsewhere. As usual, evseadapters also offers one.

There are a number of roundabouts on the Stanford campus, not far from the Tesla buildings. One would hope they've been used for testing. But yeah - I'd be hesitant to remove the turn signal stalk as well. Perhaps a business opportunity for the S3XY Buttons folks.

Tesla making HUGE mistake with Superchargers

I was thinking mostly in terms of Supercharging and DC Fast Charging in general - where one quite often gets out of the car, plugs in the SC cable, and gets back into the car. The same situation happens with ICE cars at gas stations. I own four cars with ICE - two fill on the drivers side rear...

Tesla making HUGE mistake with Superchargers

After 130 years, the car manufacturers still haven't standardized on GAS port locations... The Tesla location (drivers side rear) seems best from a human factors point of view. When you open the door and step out, which location is easiest to access? Obviously drivers side. But front or...

Ghetto NEMA 6-20 Charging with two 120v 20a outlets

It actually takes more than one relay to handle each of the possible fault cases. Even then, I doubt the Quick220 people have a UL (or equivalent) Seal of Approval on their product. I can easily think of issues the Quick220 does not address. (Personal note: my father was a lawyer who handled...
