Is it illegal to speed to the speed limit from the traffic lights when the signal turns green?

In Tennessee racing to the next light can and has been called by cops. And if you press it and try to go to court saying you were accelerating “safely” versus the cop saying you were accelerating recklessly. I would not want those odds if I were not the cop.

Climate Change / Global Warming Discussion

The book profiles 15 households across the US and Canada that have cut emissions by 75% or more or are at least 75% below their local peers. Scientists say we need to reduce our use of fossil fuels by 80% or more to avert the most dangerous effects of global warming. But is such a drastic...

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

Good points and I would concede there is a very small minority centered around Putin pulling the strings. As I have stated I believe him to be evil and the root of the current problem

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

It depends on your definition of once a year. We typically take one trip a year towing our camper. BUT that trip is typically 6+ weeks and 10,000 miles. So $800/week is more than we typically spend for camping, food, admissions, and gas. Basically by renting a truck you are more than...

    Cybertruck as mobile powerwall

It depends a lot on your heat pump. I have an Amana high efficiency inverter driven HP that rarely uses more than 2000 watts. So my FranklinWH batteries (27kWh and 10kW power) can easily run the heat pump. Granted in the winter when solar can be scarce for a week at a time we will have to...

    Michelin Crossclimate tyres

I have been running Michelin Cross Climates for most of my Model 3 life, now just past 118,000 miles. They were MUCH better than the stock tires.

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

Yes they invaded Poland as did Germany. And you point I assume is the US is a saint and Russia is not. I do agree with the Russian part.

    Cybertruck Range Extend?

I wonder if it is 6" above the best like many tool boxes so one can still haul plywood.
  9. dhrivnak

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Renting a full sized pickup for hauling your trailer is not something I have ever seen, I take it you do not own a camper nor do you show horses or other such hobby.

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

First let me be clear that I believe that Russia and Putin are in the wrong and Putin is evil. That said looking at borders the inclusion of Ukraine into NATO could be seen as a threat to Russia. Russia has been seriously invaded by the west in recent history's, Sweden, Napoleon, WW1 and WW2...

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

Again I agree but we also agreed no NATO expansion for Ukraine. We likely will never know but I wonder if Biden had agreed to no inclusion of Ukraine into NATO if the invasion would not have occurred. While Biden met with Putin before the war no such guarantee was given.

Climate Change / Global Warming Discussion

Sorry but I believe we have already passed 1.5C or rather at least that much warming baked in. With CO2 having a half life of about 100 years, and the thermal inertia of the oceans, even if CO2 were to suddenly full stop we have at least 20 more years of warming before we reach equilibrium...

Yes true and the USA also agreed to no NATO expansion. So we broke the treaty first.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Occasionally is at least once a year, and that pairs with the many once a year trips we and many others take. We take those trips seriously and we will cover between 7,000 and 11,000 miles on a trip so they are not short trips. That is 36% of truck owners. The bureau of transportation says we...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

11.2 million RVs in the USA and most are trailers. So lets be conservative and say 6 million. That is a lot of trucks. I have been towing and doing extensive camping now that I am retired for 6+ weeks a year. And there are MILLIONS of us. Don't believe me just try and make a camping...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

You forget 500 mile range become 250 when towing even a medium sized trailer something MANY people do with trucks. Just stop by any National Park camp ground or KOA. So with the 350 mile range you drop under 200 miles when towing. And many buy a truck for towing.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Not true as I have been to several gas stations with no attendant. Most were in the sparely populated west but there have been a number with no attendant and some with no building for an attendant.

    Cold Weather Tire Inflation Question

Most tires are good for 50PSI and I think you get a low pressure warning below 38psi. Dropping to 29 sounds like a nail unless it was all tires.

replacement 12V batteries for 2018 M3: OEM or 3rd party "group 51r" ok?

Any group 51 should work and while I went to a local auto store I found out Tesla is about 1/2 the price I paid. Strange but true.

    Battery Range after year

I over 5 1/2 years and 116,000 miles and still at 94% of new. I charged to 90% for the first 5 years and now dropped to 80% per current recommendations. I take about 8 long trips a year and always charge to 100% for those trips. So not babied, but I also try not to abuse either.

    When to Replace 12v?

So how much past 0 were you able to drive. and I would wait on the 12V warning. Mine first came after 4 1/2 years and not hard to change if needed.

Does the long range AWD supercharge faster than the standard range RWD?

10 minutes RWD and 8 minutes AWD. Not a lot of difference in most situations.
  28. dhrivnak

    Still charging at full speed

I am at 5 1/2 years on my Model 3 with 115,000 miles and I still charge at 250 kW, sometimes it maxes at 245 and sometimes at 252kW. My range is down 6% but SuperCharging is faster, as when I got the car there were not any 250kW chargers around.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I would far prefer a carbon tax than EV rebates. Most governments are deficit spending, which is not good and so bleeding more cash is not a smart move. It also fosters polarization. Tesla was growing just fine without the tax credits in 2019 - 2022. Let the government lead by example, by...

3 questions about my model 3

Think of it this way. The more air in the tire the easier it rolls as there is less flex and losses, but a stiffer/harder tire can't soak up pot holes as easily. If you go to the extreme at 30 psi your tires have a lot of flex and easily soaks up bumps in the road. But that sidewall flex...

3 questions about my model 3

I target 45 for slightly better efficiency, but a slightly harsher ride. both times the edge the tire was worn more than the center so higher pressure seems to be warranted in my humble opinion. But the reality is there is likely little difference between the two.

    Light show activation by phone?

I agree this would be a WONDERFUL feature and I am amazed one must go into car screen to set it. Being able to start and stop with the phone would be great at a car show.
  33. dhrivnak

Anyone ever screwed up their trunk on a model Y?

It is impossible to tell without good pictures, but the sheet metal of the trunk is not very strong so it is not too hard to bend it.

Someone just pulled up at my house expecting to be able to charge - because of google?

If you lists your home on PlugShare as I did some 10 years ago it could be listed that way.
  35. dhrivnak

Can you drive your Tesla in the rain?

Yes as in over 5 1/2 years and over 115,000 miles I have driven through hundreds of rain storms. But I have avoided forging rivers 7” or deeper.
  36. dhrivnak

What is this exactly on my brand new Model Y?

By chance did you go through a car wash with rotating brushes. Some can be quite harsh. Can likely come out with some car polish after a wash?

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Look close at heat pump water heaters they are crazy efficient about 1/4 the energy of a normal water heater. We got a Rheem a few years back and it has worked well. In our area it takes about 8 solar panels to power a typical water heater but only two for a heat pump water heater.

Can I use a tire sealant as a temporary fix to get me to a tire shop?

I have repaired 6 tires while still on the car by plugging them Only once did I remove from the car. Only two of the times was my Model 3. It is nice to be able to help others at times.

My 5+ years of "low maintenance" ownership

I have had half the service calls on my 2018 with 113,000 miles. My last set of Michelin Cross Climates lasted 56,000 miles about as good as any car I have had. I too had the rear camera go out early, but mobile Ranger corrected and Tesla eventually compensated me for it. I did have a seat...

    Electrify Everything

While true on the surface heat pumps are typically a LOT more expensive to install. And curious if the COP includes the 5 minute defrost cycle when the resistant heat strips come on every hour when below 35F.

    High mileage check-in

My guess you posted a mid-range or short-range not a long range which has the higher warranty. Most 2018’s were the long range variety which has the 8 year 120,000 mile warranty.

  47. dhrivnak

    Is this clipping?

Over drive may be the wrong word. I mean 10.5kW DC solar on a 7.7kW inverter. No more than 7.7kW AC but due to earlier start up, later shut down and higher efficiency the losses at minimal.
  48. dhrivnak

    Is this clipping?

We almost always overdrive and that is fully supported by the inverter manufacturers. With overdriving DC to AC you can lose a little by clipping but the system wakes up earlier, produces longer and runs at a higher efficiency for most of the day. I am 25% oversized with DC and have been for...

Lightweight trailers a Model 3 might be able to tow

I have towed my ALiner with my Model 3, some 2000lbs. But not very practical if going more than 100 miles as you need to unhitch and then hitch to reach most chargers. While I
