According to Drew on the latest Munro video, they have a gigabit Ethernet loop, single pair (each way), such that if one connection is lost, communications can flow the other way. Power is separate (automotive power is too noisy). And it isn't really Ethernet either. It is a synchronized TDMA...

Charging Tesla in Extreme Cold (SD, ND, MN, Canada) with 110V - Battery Heating Time at -20°C (-4°F)?

Maybe not. Many apartments in cold climates are set up for block heaters which draw a lot of current, so they generally provide dedicated circuits for each spot. Check to see what kind of receptacle you actually have. It could be a 15A or a 20A circuit. The 20A circuits have a horizontal blade...

Model S/X minor refresh coming soon?

Don’t pin your hopes on front camera helping FSD. It isn’t a super wide angle and doesn’t give you more view than what is available now. Tesla really needs left and right bumper cameras.

Tesla Only Wall Charger or Tesla Universal Wall Charger (House Power Share Feature)?

I ended going with a kohler 38 kW generator, and since I have a 400A service, just went with a single 400A transfer switch. Could I max out 38 kW of power? Sure, but easy enough to make sure I don’t have a lot of high loads operating during a blackout. Last two outages I had, I was drawing...

Tesla Only Wall Charger or Tesla Universal Wall Charger (House Power Share Feature)?

Which is why I ended up installing a natural gas standby generator. If I'm going through all the trouble and expense to put one in, I'd like one that a) served the whole house and b) didn't run out of juice after a few hours.

Nope, not going to work. Time for plan B. What are your options?

Third Party 14-50 to 14-30 Adapters with Mobile Charger

This is a common mistake. RV adapters do something special and just aren’t compatible with EV charging. You can buy 30A to 50A adapters which work, but not ones meant for RVs. Heres more info: Advice for EV Charging in North America

Universal Basic Income (UBI) is coming

I don’t think a plow would help with that, you’d need a big snowblower? Or are you thinking of 8’ tall stacked plows?

Yeah, Cybertruck IS the plow. No plow is the best plow. Put CT on lowest suspension setting and have at it. Can’t wait to see vids of this in action.

So everyone dumps on Ford for dealer market price adjustments, but is OK with Tesla doing the same thing for the first 1000 CTs. Oookay. Personally, I think both Ford and Tesla are in the right to be doing this, since I like free markets.

Reusing Boosters: Launch, Land, and Re-Launch

Of all Elon's companies, SpaceX must be one of the least seat of the pants, at least for operational launches, not R&D. Maybe Neuralink is more buttoned up. Elon is right when he says his companies operate in the most regulated environments.

100% this. Would love to see this.
  18. Cosmacelf

Model S/X minor refresh coming soon?

Model S/X aren't going to get steer by wire anytime soon. It is a massive change, and Tesla still needs to gain experience from CT for about a year before transferring the tech to a different vehicle. Early 2026 is the earliest Model S/X will see it.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

They also don't have a manufacturing line, just a hand built prototype line. So until that line gets built, we're not going to see semi. But let's see, CT will be low volume throughout 2024 (although some think otherwise). Semi needs a manufacturing line, and Tesla could easily get that built...

    Regen braking reduced

There's a setting in the car that allows the car to use friction brakes on your behalf so that you won't notice if regen is limited. That's what I use. There are many reasons why regen could be limited, some of them are due to cold.

    Charging a 2023 with a home ccs level 2 charger [correction - J1772]

Not really. If you have an existing J1772 EVSE, I'd go ahead and use it. The adapter itself appears bulletproof - I've yet to hear of a problem with it.

Nema 14-50 or Nema 14-30 dryer outlet

I still don't know why you aren't installing a Wall Connector. Would use 6/2 instead of 6/3, so cheaper. Wouldn't need a 50A GFCI, so cheaper. Wouldn't need a receptacle, so cheaper. Surge arrestor? For lightning spikes?

    xAI / Grök general discussion

Elon looking to turn X into an AI investment vehicle since he's pissed off all the advertisers :) Note that X is still a private company and thus has a hard limit to the # of shareholders so I expect the minimum investment to be around $10M and/or be a VIP in the AI space.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

My guess is no. People want specific paint colors for their cars. Also SS would require Model 2 to look really angular. CT customers will put up with the look since the SS is functional for a truck. SS provides no benefits for a run about car.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

There's no point having a really high volume production line unless you can sell the cars, and to sell the cars, they need to hit a particular low price target. So my further prediction about Model 2 is that it'll come in ONE drivetrain (only one motor) and ONE battery pack size (250 miles)...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

It sounded like Tesla was reacting to the fact that they couldn't get parts for existing cars, so trying to procure parts for a new vehicle was pointless. And it wasn't just Tesla, the entire auto industry was affected. So, no, I don't think it had anything to do with 48V parts.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I think Model 2 announcement/delivery will be different from all other Tesla vehicles. It will be a fairly boring pedestrian car, the ONLY really cool thing about it will be the price. So I think the first reveal for it will be when they have locked down the pricing, and you put in orders...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Sigh. How and why are people such bad interviewers? The ONLY thing I got out of that is that the plans for the Model 2 production line in Austin are quite advanced, Elon reviews them every week, and the production process will blow people’s minds. CT won’t be a meaningful contributor to 2024...

Tesla Only Wall Charger or Tesla Universal Wall Charger (House Power Share Feature)?

Yes indeed, you need a Tesla Gateway with an autotransformer to power a house during blackouts. OR you can just use the NEMA 14-50 outlet which is powered by a separate inverter in the truck.

SpaceX vs. Everyone - ULA, NG, Boeing, Lockheed, etc.

That’s just the ultimate sad indictment of legacy aerospace at its finest. They move so slowly that no one knows what in process inventory is and isn’t since inventory is sitting around for, in some cases, decades.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Thanks, voted. The other reason I don't think CT will ramp quickly is because it is chock full of brand new technology, some of which will break. Tesla will fix it all, of course, and make running production line changes to accommodate the fixes, but that means they don't want high volume.
  44. Cosmacelf

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Well, line capacity != line production. If they can't make use of the cells, they'll just idle the line. Not to mention that the cell line needs perfect supply chain inputs of its own and as a new cell manufacturer, Tesla may very well go through teething issues just on that. And can't the...

I really don’t know much about the vehicle parts industry, but it seems that headlamps are fairly customized for different vehicles, and the CT has very unique looking headlights. So the CT headlights may indeed be a custom part, and at that point, it would indeed be easy to order it made to...

Tesla Only Wall Charger or Tesla Universal Wall Charger (House Power Share Feature)?

Yeah, it'll be easier to stick a bunch of extension cords into the various CT receptacles. If you are in power outage prone area though, you might want to go the Powershare route.
