Plaid handling improvements: better wheels, tires, brakes, suspension options

Correct - per the T engineers we know there's no difference in software other than the 200mph unlock and the re-calibrated ABS due to the differences in geometry and Mu on the CCBs. That said, we have not had any issues with the stock calipers. They are stout when you get the MPP rotors...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

The inside scoop that I got suggests that one reason the track pack took so long to appear is that they had a Brembo version all spec'd out (the one that people saw testing at the ring and elsewhere) but Brembo wasn't willing to make any changes requested by Tesla after testing... Which is...

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

Exactly correct. We should see soon. I'm guessing they didn't redesign this one yet. Next gen car will likely be the complete replacement (Model '2' or whatever plus and derivatives. Could also be on the CT given all the time they've had to make engineering changes while waiting for the 4680...

Plaid handling improvements: better wheels, tires, brakes, suspension options

I'm trying to do the opposite - get T to sell us a set of the calipers so we can put some iron rotors on there for 1/5 of the cost. So far no luck. We did confirm there's nothing special about the tires etc. The car gateway config is updated once the track pack us purchased installed and that...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

Maybe it wasn't obvious in the pics - the hexagonal openings in the screen on the ducts are about 1/4" across. Anything that can get through there can pass right through the rotor. That said it does make sense to pull everything apart and inspect/clean them from time to time!

Plaid handling improvements: better wheels, tires, brakes, suspension options

I k I know that the video says there is some 'detection' of brakes and tires, but that sounded suspicious/unlikely to me. No-one anywhere has done anything like this - but it is plausible using BT sensors etc - but knowing how they are configured/used on the cars makes this unlikely. I put the...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

Just completed the One Lap this past weekend and wanted to share some additional data to show how the MPP rotors, GLoc pads, and our prototype ducts/backing plates are now working. Background - we have been doing some testing to see if we can increase the power over time the car can produce by...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

No offense to anyone offering brake ducting solutions out there - but we thought we could do something better and I'm happy to say I think we achieved it with this prototype setup. This is based on a motorsports design that we have observed on pro cars and then adapted to our RX7's and now to...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

Yes, in general it does the same stuff. For sure it will let you spin. I have done it once. (still got 6th of 84 in the session though lol) Yes if you watch Sasha's braking issue video, we are out on the bleeding edge. (That specific is Tesla/Bosch have since resolved.) There is still...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

I definitely am not going to accuse anyone of being slow... :D AMP is an interesting one as you say because of all the off camber, long corners, etc. Would be interesting to do some modeling of 'On time' vs offtime at max power to see how many laps I'd expect a car at max attack to be able to...
  12. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

No debate on any of what you said. They aren't doing enough to test the brakes is my opinion. It's still mostly a tire test. Agree with your supposition that Tesla can and should optimize around their customers greatest use. I think they got the balance a little off with the original setup -...
  13. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

Yeah - we are regularly hitting 850c and peaking at 900C (1650f) after 2 laps on a track before dropping due to power dropping/pack getting too hot. After a cooldown lap we were down to 350C, (650F) so 1400 is sky high after a cooldown! That said the performance of our brakes was still good -...
  14. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

No - in our testing with software from last year (can't say for sure with current but we believe nothing has changed... yet!) when you go to track mode it is full power. We have recommended to our Tesla contacts that they should provide a slider for power just like they do for balance and VSC...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

We've got some racing style sealed brake duct prototypes in production and we are looking forward to doing some back/back testing to see how much they are worth!

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

I'm hoping/believing you are right and the new pads are good enough for that ~90%+ of drivers whose use (I believe) would be covered simply by a higher performance pad. I'm encouraged by some of the reports in this thread and elsewhere with pad replacement being enough for many. I don't think...
  17. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

Exactly. This is a tire test for most cars, but I get it - they want to do something simple. If they want to actually test the brakes (instead of the tires) they need to do more. A few ideas: Repeatedly do 70-0 stops until the distance is 120% of the first stop with a consistent time/accel...
  18. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

This version of the plaid wasn't designed for track use, that's fairly obvious. They had the '+' for that but decided not to release it for whatever reason. This is the 'muscle' version of the car - and yes it came with the same brakes as the LR which are designed for comfort and long service...
  19. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

As long as the brakes can lock up the wheels (which basically every brake system these days can) these are tire/ABS tests, not brake tests.

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

Inside source says it is red calipers and pads - so they finally took all this feedback to heart which is great! I hope they used something reasonably high performance. We've tried a couple of their dev pads and had pretty good success (but still are using an actual racing pad from GLoc for...

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

It sounds like something that a marketer wrote, right? The existing calipers are up to the task - we've run them in lapping sessions up to 1500f rotor temps and had zero issues with boiling fluid or flexing etc. The fronts are a good design from Brembo that is used on Ferraris etc. The rears...

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

I'll bring back to the thread if I hear anything from the inside contacts. They often don't know until the public does when things change, but they get more information than is available publicly.
  23. G

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

Do we know there are real changes to the brakes? I mean I hope there are - but my guess based on Tesla history is they are just red. Maybe they at least are including performance pads? We have given quite a bit of feedback on this... So far the CCBs have been the answer, but that's not good...

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

Like I said - the best thing is they change stuff all the time. The worst thing is they change stuff all the time.
  25. G

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

Yes - we heard from one of the Tesla lead engineers that he thought they were offering both right up until the end but the 'lead product manager' decided to go Yoke only and make it a big deal. That decision certainly generated a bunch of press... I still love the setup using the model 3...
  26. G

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

And now they have one. The best part about Elon - but really Tesla in general - is they change all the time in response to data and feedback. The worst part about Tesla is they change all the time... On net, I think it's a big advantage.
  27. G

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

Not sure if that's really the story here. I would guess they figured out that the wheel is lower cost (and probably lower warranty repairs!) and I'd guess they have enough data now that people are avoiding buying because they didn't have the option. That's the best sort of change - one that...
  28. G

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

This was a hardware (and then software change) afaik. Are you suggesting that there are new cars without the hardware change? For the rest of us with older cars we are supposed to be able to palm the buttons on the right to activate the horn (which isn't as good.) We replaced our wheel and...

    First Plaid Trackday

The MSLR has a lot of potential to be a good track car IMO. The limitation on the plaid is generally the pack, not anything else, so the LR should be good. It's possible without the carbon sleeved rotors there will be motor heat issues, but the main problem is getting a 'party' mode onto it so...
  30. G

    First Plaid Trackday

Those temps you guys are talking about are in fact modeled. Once you modify the braking system in any way you might as well turn them off because they have very little correlation to the actual brake temps. I know this because we tested and compared data between the teamPGR car and Blakes car...

    Brake cooling idea

Brake ducts direct more/cooler air to the rotor *while the car is moving*. They do almost nothing to increase the total capacity of the system - certainly if you are not moving! Getting MPP rotors and some performance pads will be a night and day difference from what you are experiencing now...

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

Having driven this now for ~4000 miles on the road and at ~4 track days I can say this setup is great. We only have the left stalk but that seems to not matter too much, I know some would rather have it for the direction changes. We have some videos up now on the teamPGR YouTube channel if you...
  35. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

That's a good question - I don't know about all the S models but I'm not sure it matters because none of the S models were designed to work on a road course. The first model Tesla created that was road course capable was the Model 3 Performance and that did come with different brakes, and...
  36. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

The pads were clearly selected for comfort not performance and are pretty low friction. One hint - the brake setup on the non-'+' version of the plaid (the one we are all able to buy right now) are the same as the ones on the LR.
  37. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

Sure - clips are easy so maybe worth a shot but I believe that this is due mainly to the pads. A more performance oriented compound will feel much better. Depending on how you drive most of the time on the street (<.3g stops at <90soc) the pads are not even used - it's just regen, so I think...
  38. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

We cranked the 'Stability Assist' down to '-10' in Track Mode and can go pretty hard and not trigger the rear brakes at all. Big slides, even ones that uncorrected will cause a spin are possible without intervention. Agree that part of this could be due to the control afforded by torque...
  39. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

I believe Sasha bent them a bit for us. The rotors aren't improving the feel, they are improving the capacity and the recovery (they shed heat faster) which can help feel as a side effect if the system is not going above thermal design limits etc.
  40. G

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

teamPGR's opinion after 2 days testing now: Get the MPP rotors (oversized fronts) the brake cyl brace and some good quality street pads and the car will be 100% better than stock. That will probably cover most people who have a plaid in our opinion. For the 5% that want to lap at a road...

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

That car is our teamPGR car that Sasha and MPP have been working on the last few months, getting it ready for one lap and doing development on all the new parts. Sasha has a complete list in the description for the video. The wheel is from Ryan though, so that isn't an MPP product Sasha can...
  42. G

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

Mechanically it's not hard - Tesla used a bunch of components for both that are roughly compatible. Electrically they are different, and the main issue is the software does not recognize the signals because there are different buttons etc. Ryan has figured out how to make the wheel scrollers...
  43. G

Work in progress: stalks on 2021 Model S. (and optional round-y wheel)

That looks like great progress! Really appreciate the expertise and time you have put into this. Sasha gave the prototype wheel on our car a glowing review! I know you didn't want to make a product in the end, but you are almost there now anyway haha! Given your time and energy limitations...

2021 Model S Plaid Brake Failure - At lower speeds.

Not too long, but our experience isn't typical - we know some Tesla engineers and were able to go straight to them bypassing the standard service experience. We were collecting data off the car and were able to give that to them.
  45. G

2021 Model S Plaid Brake Failure - At lower speeds.

I hear that - hope they figure it out quick. I suspect they might.
  46. G

2021 Model S Plaid Brake Failure - At lower speeds.

If there's not some physical damage that could be done by a person or road debris it's definitely a warranty issue. They don't want to give you back a car without being able to explain what failed, why and a complete repair with any sort of brake issue. I haven't heard of any ABS failures, the...
  47. G

2021 Model S Plaid Brake Failure - At lower speeds.

I slipped a stealth edit in there - based on the fact that it was saying that it wouldn't go into hold mode I'm thinking the iBoost died and she didn't realize how hard you have to push to get the car to slow down. The clicking could be the ABS going off, that generally sounds like solenoids...
  48. G

2021 Model S Plaid Brake Failure - At lower speeds.

The Plaid has hydraulic brakes like most cars from the last ~50+ years. The assist is electric (Bosch iBoost) rather than vacuum and of course the car does slow down under most circumstances via regen too, but the car does not blend the brakes electronically like many other EVs and Hybrids. If...

Model S Plaid Brakes Are Terrible!

My understanding is that it is no different practically than the original part, but they make changes for a reason That said EPC still shows 1420671-00-A as current, so I don't have any info to share. If someone with a recent build Plaid can confirm their booster's part number we can research...
