Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

We're on E-15 with the averaging. I actually started on the E27 because in theory the cheaper demand charges. However, since we have PWs I'm effectively zeroing out all demand during all peak periods so it really doesn't matter which plan/rates I use since the off-peak rates are all the same...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

I'm in Queen Creek (phx metro area) with SRP and the demand management in the Tesla app has worked fine and is a relief to finally be able to just configure it there instead of using third part apps to try and make it all work. It does seem like Tesla is still tweaking how things work...

Moving a Powerwall to a new home

Thanks for posting this, we're looking at selling our house with four PWs... and I was curious about this as I don't think most buyers will fully value or understand the PWs. After 3 years of use (on track to pay off the original full costs of both our PV and PW systems after just under 5...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Yeah, I edited my response also, to mention a reset button on the gateway that support had me use one time. Also possibly there is a current sensor placed incorrectly if there is no indication of actual grid usage like what you are seeing. Hopefully their support might be able to see that on...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

This first snapshot is a real time view of your energy flows, thus the moving green bars. This first view does not try to indicate any history of your usage or power flows., i.e. whether not earlier in the day you drew power from the grid. So while at the moment you took the snapshot you were...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Agreed. I'm a program/project manager in my day job, and I had every number and contact, called people daily, multiple time daily directly, and would be hesitant to do anything with Tesla on the solar side again as far as only adding Solar. I have to admit, we have a Model Y and a Model 3, and...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Glad to hear it's finally working for you. Tesla definitely has a blackhole service/support situation when "anything" goes wrong during initial systems startup. I had a fairly simple straight forward PV inverter failure after only a few days of initial operation, and it took a couple months to...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

I think your setup should work but you might need to make sure you are using a "Peak" period from pre-sunrise to post-sunset (i.e. during your entire longest day of the year PV generation window). tweak your buy and sell values for that peak period. Try setting the TBC Peak Period cost values...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

We would need to see your configurations and energy usage charts to provide any useful help. If you attach them like slazinger_7 did showing your configurations and buy/sell costs, and also the 4 Energy usage charts with the Overlap toggle turned on (round chart symbol next to the "Day" - top...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

It does seem like it should work as configured. Even though this shouldn't be necessary, one thing to try is setting your offpeak to "super offpeak" (will show as blue) and also enter your buy costs as normal, but ZERO your SELL costs for that super off-peak period (0.0). Also, setting your...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

If SRP shows 0kw, then your bill should reflect 0 for peak demand charges. SRP averages power draw over 30 minute periods which is also what most utilities do, I believe. As an example, a 1kW blip for one 5 minute period in the Tesla app, with all other 5 minute segments showing 0kw usage, on...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

We probably need a little more information. Maybe post your configuration settings, and a snapshot of flows that show what you're talking about - that is if the configuration has been in place for a couple days without edits. It can take a few days for the behavior to settle in as the system is...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Okay, good to hear you have it working the way you need. The zero buy and/or sell values do seem to be the primary controlling factor that seems to change behavior across the various peak and off-peak types.
  14. JayClark

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Yup. I agree there should be simple controls to verbosely be able to dictate the exact flows, when we want. So instead, we have to play with the configs to get what we want. I've given up complaining about it (never seen that work anywhere on these forums) and simply try to work around the...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

I've tested this in many different ways and ensuring I have a zero (0.00) sell value stops the sending of solar back to the grid unless the PW is at 100% SOC. It basically tells the Powerwall there is no value in sending power to the grid. I've also tried it with 0.01 and it started sending...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

I have noticed, specifically on Fridays and only Fridays, after my peak period ends (right now that is 8pm for my utility) the PW will keep powering the house loads even after my peak period ends (just like you describe) even while I'm well into my super off-peak period. It doesn't do this...
  17. JayClark

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Pretty nice. I don't believe SRP has anything like that APS rate plan. All but one of SRPs Solar plans also have high demand charges so SRP customers are in the same boat as far as potentially huge and escalating demand usage charges for any peak period power draws. I couldn't justify going...

Interesting! Who is your Utility and what rate plan are you on that has lower buy price than Sell. Sounds like an amazing deal.

Model Y Towing - Experiences Post here

Definitely will be interested to hear your actual results after your trip compared to your assumptions - which sound pretty reasonable to me. Would also like to hear what charging ranges you typically end up doing/needing (i.e. 10%-80, 20-90, etc) on your charging stops as you go along. Due to...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Based on what I've been seeing in testing with my own system, you're going to need to zero our your Off-peak sell value, it will need to be 0.00 if you want to see no PW usage during off-peak. Also, in my case I've set that period to "Super Off Peak", with a sell value of 0.00 and I'm finally...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

I agree with Redhill. Although, while 0.01 for buy may be close to realistic for what the OP indicated the utility is charging (since I think the OP said they have zero charge for offpeak), like Redhill mentioned, I think to force the PW behavior the OP wants they'd want to fill in a higher...
  22. JayClark

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Yes that is my take generally. Although, for me over the last few months the behavior seemed less predictable for my system on balanced than what I can force now with the new settings and sell/buy values. Possibly, just because of the unique balance of relatively small PV capacity to high PW...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Quick update regarding behavior of setting the Sell Value for Peaks and Mid-Peaks when trying to control whether extra solar gets sold back to the grid vs going to charging the PW. With the days getting cloudy this week, my PW SOC was not getting back high enough to cover both peaks as...

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

One thing you want to make sure you do for your peak period if you don't want to be selling back to the grid is set your "sell" value to 0. I actually set it to 0.01 which seems to work fine, because 0.00 values while they effect behavior, don't "Stick" when it comes to editing configurations...

    Arizona Powerwall Installs

I had 21.35.3 for at least a week, maybe a bit longer, before I saw multiple peak scheduling go active. When I finally did get it I was still on that same version. For Arizonan's it seems in addition to 21.35.3 something else also has to happen, but it's not clear to me what that would be...

Yes, I used Darwin’s app for years, it was a lifesaver. Fantastic app. But with Tesla’s security changes to tokens I was also having trouble keeping it running. While it shouldn’t have taken this long, Tesla’s update is very welcome. It is the right way to manage the system relative to the...

Tesla App Utility plan configuration: Multiple Peaks, Buy/Sell Behavior, etc

Starting a thread to document behavior I'm seeing using the new multiple peaks configurations (really multiple of any type). Maybe this information exists elsewhere but I couldn't find it when I first had my system go live a couple years ago, and I'm not really seeing if for the multiple peak...

I was wondering the same about Off-peak and super off-peak, so today I have both set with the same buy/sell values. Will see if they behave differently.

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

These are the settings I'm running with now for my SRP rate plan (average demand) and multiple peaks. I'm not sure the costs matter, other than to have something in the "sell" side during peak if you want any solar generated going back to SRP for peak offset purposes. I think maybe for peaks it...

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

Agreed. It also wasn't obvious to me, that after making a slight change like that, I could go back one page and save, and didn't have to go through all the other buy/sell cost setting pages (many pages where the $0.00 costs would go blank and require re-adding 0 values) and then save.
  33. JayClark

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

Yes, see attachments. We have the same challenge here in Arizona, where we have winter with multiple peak rates on the same day, separated by non-peak windows on the same day which was a nightmare because of the significant demand penalties for using ANY peak power. And We have two other summer...

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

Admittedly only two days of experience so far, but with the new flexible unlimited (essentially) ability to set various levels of peak, off-peak - plus the ability to but in $x.xx buy and/or sell amounts it feels fairly tunable. I seem to now be able fully set things so my system uses the Solar...

Sigh. 1" square tubing, 3/8 wall, rated at close to 1000lbs/sqr-in under compression (per leg @18" long), welded end caps on one end, inserted & welded solid 3/4" threaded rod on the other, clear coated. Twist up/down legs (x2) distributing to the floor maybe 50% of the weight for each 250...

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

Interesting, it must be the difference between how our systems are sized. I only have 4.1k of PV, but 4 Powerwalls (which is what I calculated to need to insure the fastest pay-back period based on what our home uses in summer and winter). So by just setting the off-peak 9pm to 5am, which...

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

I’m able to switch from the AM peak window to the PM Peak window by just changing the am/pm values for the peak, two changes and save. Not sure if this is simpler than how you’re doing it, but seems fairly simple. Regardless I agree we shouldn’t have to do this in the first place. Video/GIF...

Nah, not really that much going on. Tesla did all the installation and their team did the structural alanlysis which was checked and approved by the city. It's a load bearing wall, but I don't know much beyond that. They actually did spread them out more than I wanted originally both for...

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

Yeah, ultimately we need the multi-peak windows config. To be clear, I'm using a 5am-9am peak, and then changing it to 5pm-9pm peak every day at some point after my morning peak. Everything I'm describing about shoulder and reserve is all about dealing with the draining of the PW during...

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

I guess technically I'm setting "Off-Peak" to be 9pm to 5am and I just leave it don't ever change it, which has the effect of having a shoulder that is always covering the gap between my peak periods 100%. Then twice a day I toggle the am/pm on the 9-5 for the peak period. So basically at...

Utility Rate Plans Where are they?

I have mine set with a shoulder period (attached snap shot) and I think that effectively causes the PW to save the PW for the longer periods. I just checked it out and it hasn’t used any off Peak PW. I also have a reserve set which seems to force the Powerwall to save some power wall juice...

220 lbs / 100 kg min. hanging on your wall.

I had 4 PWs mounted fine on my wall (2x4 studs). However, In my case my garage ceiling was 11ft tall, and ultimately I started seeing dry wall cracks after a few months. Structurally it’s fine, but I ended up welding up some supports I could wedge up underneath each PW with some legs I could...

Just got the FSD beta Monday, Pretty cool, but still a ways to go no doubt. While working on my safety score, I never did see a ding while on Autopilot, not once. Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

Are you on the average demand SRP Solar Generation TOU plan? I waited way to long to switch to that plan. Probably you already know this, but while the 30 minute demand peak $ rates are a bit higher (which is why I didn't select it originally) than the non-average TOU plan it doesn't really...
