Going down for maintenance this weekend

I don't like the new "high contrast" colors, but I found just now the "dark mode" in settings (was that there before?). The bright white font on the dark mode setting is also too much. Look at most dark theme implementations with a high text volume, they use 238 or lower, not 255. Also, fonts...

220V adapter for Airbnb - would that be helpful?

It is generally absorbed by the host. A Tesla battery is 50-75 kWh and you can expect that they will arrive with the battery completely depleted and leave with it charged. However, you can probably rely on them not needing much more than that if they stay for multiple nights, so the $3-$7 cost...

Cost to charge at home in Florida

The absolute max energy that you could draw (if charging 100% of the time) is 1,000 kWh or $100 at $0.1kwh. Now you know that you cannot charge 100% of the time - unless you are just using the car as a heater, you'll need to drive it. A good rule of thumb would be 50% driving, 50% charging -...

    Short Term Home Charging Advice

You say "not long term" but you don't have a clear timeline of when you are moving out. If you own the place, then you reap some benefit of your investments when you sell. So if you spend $1,000 installing a weatherproof box, then probably no one will care, but if you spend $2-3k on installing...

How to get the Best Range from Your Tesla (video)

yeah, he misses the obvious "elephant in the room", stop whining about your range when it is 3-4x your daily driving needs. He misinterprets "short trips will decrease your range" as "don't take short trips".

    JuiceBox 40 cable heat

Interesting, I'd never thought about where the limit is for warm vs hot. Internet says 125-135F 57C is too hot to touch for most people. I'd recommend getting a temperature laser gun - not for this, but just in general they are very useful...

    JuiceBox 40 cable heat

If the plug does not get hot and just the cable, then it is probably just a normal thing. Wires are usually rated for 75C-90C 167F-194F which is almost enough to boil water. The 10AWG is probably closer to its limit, hence it being hotter than your 6AWG wires.

Can I Swap Wall Connector Cable for Different Length?

They are hard wired, replacing them is not worthwhile. If you are preparing for a second Tesla, then install a 14-50 outlet where your second Tesla will be. If you are not outdoors and looking to save money, then don't bother with the wall connector at all. Just install the 14-50 and use the...

    Regen Fast or Slow?

Drag force at 20 mph is about 40N, and 140N for 40mph, but actually we are probably talking about more like 5-10mph for coasting. If you have a wire that is below its capacity it might have 0.01% losses, but when it reaches the capacity it has maybe 3-5% losses (exponential, but still not very...
  13. U

    Regen Fast or Slow?

I'm not sure how you are reading what I said, but the "hard braking" will be more efficient. The energy is lost to air resistance which is exponential from speed. Once lost, it can't be recovered. The car recovers the energy, travels at a lower speed and has less air resistance. It then has more...
  14. U

    Regen Fast or Slow?

I think it is nonsense. Lets say that you go 45 -> 20, then you recapture 25 mph worth of energy. Then you will coast at 20 mph to your stop. Alternatively, with slower regen, you will have 45 mph of wind resistance (between 45 and 20 gradually) and so you would recoup less energy. The lost...

    Salty...[comment about tone of posts]

I'm more surprised by the number of people who come on here and they expect a "particular answer" to their problem, or they come on here to complain about Tesla and act like we should all apologize for Tesla. NOOB: "my car says needs service... guys, what should I do?" TMC: "take it to service"...

Roadtrip at lower charges ended up with faster trip time

Using trip planning software like ABRP (A Better Routeplanner) or Tesla's route guidance avoids this blunder. Glad you figured it out, but sad how many people get the car and have no idea for several months or years (including myself).

Charge Point Requires Service - Error Message

Actually, you can drive to the SC (got confused if you can drive or not), that is the best even if the tow is free. Like the other user said, get that done before you run out of power.
  19. U

Charge Point Requires Service - Error Message

Requires service refers to Tesla's warranty service at their service center. You'll need to contact Tesla to arrange for your car to be towed to the nearest service center, possibly to receive a loaner car while your car is serviced.

    Heating enery use

Maybe if it is 73 degrees outside, then the seat heater will use more power. Maybe not. Otherwise, which uses more power, to heat a small 5 oz wire, or to heat an entire car?

    Placerville, CA to Kyburz, CA

You trip is 5 hours 49 minutes according to ABRP, but your charging is 17 minutes. You should also know that you need more than a regular 120v outlet to make a big difference in your trip. On the way back you will have maybe 2-3 charging stops, which isn't a big deal either. Also since you...

    Manually warm up battery?

Set the car's acceleration to "Insane+" and it will heat the battery, in addition to preconditioning. I'd guess you might already be on this mode, so maybe temp is not the problem. You are correct at the loss of power correlating with the battery percent lower. Max power = current x voltage...

Scheduled Departure for AM Commute---uses more than saves?

You can't do precise math with such generous assumptions. Even if your battery is warmer, then you still have the cabin to heat (let alone the driving style and conditions), you will not be getting rated miles. I only know the info on the Tesla website about "Scheduled Departure", it mentions...
  25. U

Scheduled Departure for AM Commute---uses more than saves?

You are not properly comparing the numbers. The "miles of range" are a very generous estimate. It is not uncommon to use 22 "miles of range" for a 12 mile trip when you consider climate and a frozen battery. The car will heat the cabin when you start driving, so all you loose is the loss during...

Model 3 vs Model S long trips at 80 mph

By "charge every day", I assume you mean at home and at the supercharger, because if you mean you don't charge at home, then that is your issue. If you are driving 265 miles, then even at 80mph that is 3+ hours. A 6 minute SC stop is nothing. Both these screenshots are at 80mph Model 3 LR...

Model 3 vs Model S long trips at 80 mph

I was thinking more in terms of people who have never even heard about how a supercharger is intended to be used. Even though I knew that it charges faster 0-40% it wasn't until I used the ABRP software that I realized you were intended to drive that way, and that was 1 year after owning the...

Model 3 vs Model S long trips at 80 mph

So you would say that you drive in an ordinary day more than 200 miles? Realistically, at some point your daily driving becomes indistinguishable from a road trip, and you will need to optimize your trips for charging speed. That means driving until near empty (5-15%) and making use of...

Model 3 vs Model S long trips at 80 mph

In terms of deciding between the two cars, I don't think that "50 miles range" should be a significant factor. The Model S right now is geared toward selling the higher acceleration Plaid/Plaid+ models. You do have a few minor differences like a roomier interior, but it isn't going to be a good...

Tapping into Wall Mounted Connector to get 240 V, 25 amps or so.

Legal disclaimer: DIY electrical work requires "permitting" in most city jurisdictions and while most don't bother with them, there are insurance ramifications, etc Looks like the way your wall connector is mounted doesn't allow much space for a NEMA weatherpoof box to be installed. You can...

    Houston Texas

Don't know about your exact area, but it is common in less dense cities (ie. not near the coast) to offer both apartments with garages and detached garages. Its not free, but does give you the quasi-benefit of having a garage, and also the convenience of always being plugged in. It is 120v, so...

    Anyone ever run out?

Its a nice theory, but I'm suspicious of people who generate precise technical explanations for "something that happened". Who is to say the car did not shut itself off according to some other algorithm?
  36. U

    Anyone ever run out?

A lot more are probably wrong turns and missed exits. In a lot of places, a missed exit or wrong turn can cost your 20 miles. If 20 miles was your buffer (10% on some cars), then you are stuck. Many rural highways have 10+ miles between exits, and leaving too large of a buffer affects...

    Xcel Discounted Charging Program Report

Preconditioning when not plugged in doesn't affect the battery other than using power from it.
  38. U

    Anyone ever run out?

The reason for that is that the car's cooling systems are not operating while the car is being towed without a driver. It is a dumb idea for anything other than a youtube video, for obvious reasons.

    Hidden Energy Consumption

I think what you are missing is that the "length of time" that you precondition affects how much energy it uses. You are "preconditioning" when you get in the car before you shift gears and press the gas pedal. If you precondition 20 minutes in advance, that will waste energy, but if 5 minutes...

Overnight in 0°F weather? Travel Tips?

If you have a supercharger 15 miles away, there is nothing to worry about with "vampire drain" if that is even a real thing for most Tesla owners. One thing to consider is if you have superchargers along the way. You seem smart, so you can put your consumption into ABRP and get what range to...

There is no such page, sorry. Wifi is just for automatic updates and config. Schedule departure charging makes wall charger go crazy

Seems like something that needs a video, if you are not afraid of further damage for another test. It is probably a problem with the charging station. You can try the Tesla with another cable such as the included UMC just to be sure. There is no problem connecting to the non-Tesla charger...

    Tesla Seats 2020-21

Just watched a video with someone commenting how great the seats were in their Model 3. Since Tesla's don't have exact model numbers, this must be a new thing that was added somewhat recently (the seats in my 2019 are fine, but not "excellent"). Anyone have more info on these seats, or have a...

    Hidden Energy Consumption

This is the same as to say that pre-conditioning warms the battery and provides for more efficient operation. It takes heat from the main battery only if the battery has heat to provide. I think that the "system" is overall cooler and less efficient, but that the battery is still being...

Just finished my first "road trip" and I am not happy with range

Yeah, basically everyone who buys a Tesla is surprised by how much the range drops in the winter. What is happening is that electric vehicles (ie. Teslas) are becoming mainstream, and people are approaching EVs with very high expectations. This is in contrast to a more reserved approach where...

Questions about condo charging near the ocean

"doesn't excite me" is a very odd thing to say. I'm guessing that you mean to say that you have "range anxiety" about living off the 5-15 outlet. If you have a beach condo, then you probably spend the majority of most days withing walking distance of your home. That equates to 72 miles per day...
