6 reasons why Tesla is failing, and they all have to do with design

For me, I still like the look and feel of the model S and I enjoy the changes that have been made along the way. My 2023 S feels like a completely different car than my 2013, despite looking similar from the outside. That being said, I don’t think the S is worth the asking price. I see it more...

2013 Model S started throwing multiple errors

I had a similar situation with my 2013 model S, and they were able to drop the HV battery, let it dry out for a bunch of days, and then replace a bunch of seals and parts. It's working fine again, but the whole process took 2 weeks and cost ~$2,000. They gave me a loaner the entire time, and...

    Wheels!

Another thing to check is the wheel load rating. The model s is a heavy car and you need to ensure the wheels are strong enough to support its weight.

    Show off your aftermarket wheels.

Excellent question, as this is something I did a lot of digging on before deciding to purchase them. The GAWR for the rear is 3131lbs. The wheels are rated for 1808lbs each. So I have roughly an 245lbs per wheel buffer. My car is RWD, so the front is lighter. I don’t think Tesla publishes...

    Show off your aftermarket wheels.

FastCo EV01+'s. 19x8.5. They were harder to find that I expected. WheelWiz was the only place I could find, and the only color they had was the silver/black. I really wanted the all black ones, but such is life. These were an upgrade from the standard 2013 model S wheels. To date, they have...

    Cracked rim replacement advice sought

You can go with aftermarket wheels as well, if you like something different. Just make sure they can support a heavy car like the S. I’m a big fan of the Fast EV01+. https://fastco.ca/Fast-Wheels/Alloy-Wheels/stylefinish?wheelCategory=17&stylefinish=EV01(%2B)%7CBLK%2B%252f%2BSAT

    Both fobs just stopped

I did an update a few days back and I’ve notice that the proximity sensors to unlock the car no longer work, however if I push a button on the fob it will unlock. Not sure if it is related or not.

2020 MS Long Range Plus approximate resale value?

Tesla had a grey 2020 LR model S in their used inventory a few weeks back for $47k. Biggest difference was that it had 70k+ miles. If interest rates rise, I’d expect demand to lower, which will have a cooling affect on prices.

Need Advice -- Tesla updated software on my 2013 Model S, Now im being forced into pricey Infotainment upgrade.

Another thing you can do to speed up the maps on MCU1 is to turn off the live traffic view. For whatever reason having it enabled creates a lot of lag.

Wiki Consolidated eMMC Thread (MCU repair) (Black Center Screen)

I upgraded to MCU2 in my AP0 model s. For me, the deciding factor came down to responsiveness. With MCU1, if I was planning a long trip it could take an upwards of 8 or more MINUTES for the navigation to plan the route. If I missed a turn, it would take 45 seconds to a full minute to reroute...

    advice: what should I offer for this 2016 S 70 transferable SC01?

My estimate for a vehicle like this is $28k, tops. Similar and better spec’ed versions are selling for $32k on auto tempest. Several red flags that give me pause. - low mileage. Typically this is a good thing, but on the older model s’ with the large drive unit, this is actually a bad thing...

Model S - Defective LEDs on Charger Ring

I had my charge port replaced a few years back and the led ring (literally just the plastic part with LEDs and a cable) was an additional $214 in parts. I said thanks but no thanks.

how to switch on air suspention pump when main battery is dead ?

I had a similar problem when my 2013 had to be towed due to the HV battery getting water in it. I popped the grill off and connected a batter jumper to the leads to charge the 12V battery. It allowed me to put the car into jack mode and raise the suspension.

    BMW folks comments on Tesla

That’s the beauty of having these types of options. Want something that’s comfy to sit in? Get the S580. Want something of similar size that’s also crazy fast? Get the Plaid. The term “luxury” is dependent on what the individual values most.

High Wh/Mi and slow supercharging rates on 2014 MS

Which tires did you get? I’ve seen a difference of as much as 100 wh/mile based on tires alone (summer vs winter).

    2013 Model S a money pit

Prius’s (prii? Priuses? Priuseseses?) are known for being a cheap and reliable car. Teslas, especially new model teslas, are the opposite. My rule is to never buy a car until 2 years after its launch date to ensure they have worked out the big problem areas. This rule is especially true with...

Discussion: Model 3 Price reductions - Jan / April / Oct 2023 and all other pricing discussions

I’m going to nitpick. Socialism is when the government controls the means of production, and unrelated to this conversation. Tesla is a private company that chooses what it wants to do or not do to retain its customer base. Since investors measure Tesla on how many vehicles they deliver, it’s...

Strange regen braking problem - shaking

I’m fairly confident that the shaking is being caused by whatever is limiting the regen braking. I experienced the issue again last week when I charged my car to 98% and regen was reduced. I also experience it when the car is left in the cold and the battery is cold and regen is reduced. Any...

    Used S vs New Y - 7-seat commuter

I love the S but the slow super charging speeds are getting annoying. That being said, I prefer sedans and am not a fan of SUVs. Not sure if it will tip the scales, but as of yesterday Tesla is offering $3750 off if you take delivery of a Y or 3 in December.

How far will current selling prices fall after Jan. 1 ?

I think they would in an attempt to push the LR buyers to the more expensive Performance model. Similar to what they did with the model 3.

How far will current selling prices fall after Jan. 1 ?

There really isn't much of a waitlist anymore. A MYLR has a delivery time of Dec-March, and a MYP has a delivery range of Nov-Dec. And that's not including the 15 they have on the lot. My personal belief is that they will introduce a "new" lower cost model, aka, standard range, eliminate the...

How far will current selling prices fall after Jan. 1 ?

Trade in values dropping is a leading indicator to prices falling. Dealerships/sellers know they won't be able to demand as high of a price in the future and thus are offering less now. The value of my S went from $33k to $18k in six months time!

Battery Degradation – 10 year report

I also have a 4xxx 2013 model S (door sticker says January manufacturing date) with 80k miles. At 100% charge it claims to have 244 miles of range. I consider that acceptable since the car is nearly 10 years old and on the original pack.

2020 Model S with BMW wheels including range impact

I’m surprised that the difference in weigh affected range as much as it did. Makes me think Tesla has a lot of extra room for range improvements.

2020 Model S with BMW wheels including range impact

I did a quick google search and the heaviest rear axel I found was 1500kg (older performance model with big rear drive unit), which I think is still within range for this wheel.

Vendor Recell Launches Groundbreaking Remanufactured Battery Packs for Model S and Model X

Question about the energy capacity. You may have already stated this in different terms, but I didn’t catch it. Do the packs contain the same amount of cells as an OEM pack, just that some of them are older and have experienced some degradation?

2020 Model S with BMW wheels including range impact

Seems like it would be easy to confirm if the wheels are within spec if they have the load ratings stamped on the back. In my limited experience, M3 stock tires normally have a load index of 94 to 99, which is 1477-1709lbs per wheel. One could assume that the German engineers would build the...

Vendor Preventative Maintenance regarding Battery Failures in early Model S vehicles (2012-2014)

My 2013 model S has a 4xxx VIN and was manufactured in January of 2013. Earlier in the year I had the issue of moisture getting into the battery, and I am curious if the evap drain was to blame. Total cost was ~$2000 for a new fuse, field CRT kit, umbrella valves, and a rapid mate plate. Took...

    Price Check - 2013 p85+ w/ full Clear-Bra

The 85 packs were rated at 265 when new, and even a rebuilt pack wouldn’t likely have that much range. I’m guessing it’s a replacement 90 pack that has degraded to 258. As others mentioned, super charging speeds are also slow. Expect an hour to an hour and a half at a supercharger.
  39. T

    Price Check - 2013 p85+ w/ full Clear-Bra

It looks like it is very well kept, however as the owner of a 2013 model S, you need to be prepared for some potentially expensive repairs. The drive units are known to fail, and that's a $6k replacement. The early batteries are also not as robust as the newer models, and a new pack is $20k...

Model S LR, Black/black, tempest - reservation transfer

Hi all - I have a reservation for a 2022/23 model S LR, black exterior and interior, with tempest wheels, no FSD. Total price for the vehicle is $97,490. I put the reservation down, but then ended up having to move to a more expensive area, so I never took delivery. Open to offers. Not...

Looking to possibly buy a 21/22 Model S. Worried there are so many being sold with low miles

Completely anecdotal, but the last time I was at the SC near me, I was really surprised to see so many plaids in the lot (at least 20). I then ran into someone dropping one off, and he told me it had been to the SC 6 times in less than a year. This time was because of a failure of the MCU. He...

    WH/mile?

I have a 2013 model S 85, and average 255wh/m at 70-75mph with AC set to 4 and 72F. In the city it’s more like 300whm. I recently got a set of Fast EV01+ wheels that have helped a lot with highway range. Tires are Michelin PS3 summer tires.

    Screen leaking fluid bubbling

This is my thought as well. The actual liquid crystal fluid could potentially be toxic, but it’s also a very very tiny amount (measured in microns, I believe). What’s leaking is likely the adhesive between the digitizer and the LCD panel, which is not toxic. I think what’s happening with a lot...

    2013 S 85 Charge Port Replacement Tips?

I don’t have an answer to your question, my only advice is to be careful with the led trim, as a mobile tech once quoted me $200+ for a new one.

Tesla model s rear suspension leak

I have an early 2013 model (4xxx vin) and I noticed that the rear drivers side sags if I don’t drive the car for a week. Curious to know what the Tesla service center quote was vs 3rd party. My thought is that I won’t address it until it’s worse. Is there harm in waiting?

Tesla Wall connector with 14-50 NEMA plug

There was another thread somewhere that showed the efficiency of the different charging rates, and if I remember correctly low amperage charging and really high amperage charging (level 3) were the least efficient.

    Model S -> Taycan Review

Beautiful car, and you got it for a great price! Dealers near me are charging that price for used base models with 20k+ miles.

Buying a 2015 Model S 85 and have a few questions for the experts.

For me it’s mainly about fraud. Florida has the highest rate of uninsured drivers in the entire US, so repairs often go undocumented and are hidden during resale.
