This was definitely due to your SOC. I think it's the mid 90's when regen braking starts working. I had this same surprise when I rented a Tesla on a trip and it was fully charged.

What I do is just check the app a minute or two before I leave for work. It also helps my TeslaCam/raspberry pi wake up and connect to the car.

I agree that you should try to get it repaired but what will likely happen is a return. When I got mine, the only thing I noticed was the passenger mirror would get stuck when unfolding so I emailed support and of course they ignored me until I threatened to return the car. Something for you...

I had a Mazda CX9. What a difference between the two. I had to switch back for a day and it's crazy. Height and the lack of regen.
