MASTER THREAD: Comprehensive Road-Course Modification Guide — Optimizing the 3 for the track

I'm keeping -1.5F, -2.0R. Optimal would be OEM specs. That one is a compromise for spirited driving. UP FUCA eventually got bolts completely fused, so I can't adjust it anymore. I also don't use quick swap feature, since I'm lazy to do it, it gets stuck easy and you have to fix toe there and...

That very much depends on how it's implemented. Bosch system is not great - feeling is weird. On the street I prefer one pedal. On the track I prefer to not overheat battery with regen at all. Better abs is always welcome, though.

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Thanks. Probably added ESP® hev so it can use regen only through brake pedal application until it runs out of regen capacity and only then use mechanical braking. None of that is damper, though. Or it just might mean that esp doesn't control dampers. So, I don't know, but sounds interesting...

@eivissa where is this info about damperless esp is from? On the scheme you only have standard brake system parts.
  8. Mash

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Could be just removed dampers for the module mount. Or could be an abs pump without pressure damper. I think that I had that on Evo X - it doesn't pulse abs, it's just quickly finds the edge of traction loss and stays there. Basically it's a much faster direct pressure pump that maintains...

Vendor Model 3 Öhlins DFV Coilovers - Engineered by Redwood Motorsports ™

If you make it too stiff - it starts bouncing on tires, but frequency is much higher. Nausea is usually from medium springs on soft dampers.
  10. Mash

Vendor Model 3 Öhlins DFV Coilovers - Engineered by Redwood Motorsports ™

If it's bouncing - it means dampers are not slowing springs enough (not stiff enough). Harder springs will make that effect worse with higher frequency, bur lower amplitude of bouncing.

How much is the difference? I have a 1.5 degree caster difference left to right due to bad manufacturing. I fixed it by UP FUCA, but it generally means car frame is somewhat crooked and mounting points are shifted. Without caster adjustable FUCA you cant do much - half degree only by shifting...

I dont have power drop curve after peak anyway. Its a model of ideal motor that keeps constant torque and then constant power after that. Its not meant to simulate m3p. Its only meant to show that battery is not that much of the culprit.

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Thats completely irrelevant - certainly every specific tire has optimal load and adding more load moves it out of optimal load and traction starts to decrease vs load. But heavy car can have tires under optimal load and have the same deceleration as lighter car under optimal load with different...

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

I dont know how to say it more clearly. If you have 2 light cars connected together - they act as one 2x heavier car that stops the same as a light car. And you don't need 2x more wheels to do it. Now if you compare loaded and unloaded truck - yes, they are different, because it's the same tire...

I specifically said that my model is torque limited by the grip. Battery is not limiting torque, it's limiting power. M3P is lower acceleration than 1.0g for 0-60 and it's dropping power way below battery limit after 45. The purpose of this model is to show that battery is not the limit of...

That's not how pressure is calculated. And it's not how tire contact patch works. Also, not how coefficient works. Lighter doesn't stop better not in theory, not in practice. Lighter turns and rotates faster. Lighter gains speed faster. Lighter is good. But stops the same. Heavier cars have...

Plaid brakes were really bad. They stopped the car, but feeling was bad, overheat is bad. Later they improved. Enough? Idk. But my claim is - when brakes work well you dont have 0-60 better than 60-0 ever. I can't prove something that doesnt exist. It's a made up myth about heavy cars taking...

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Motors are creating mechanical power from electricity and you get much less power from the M3P battery than it can provide.

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Touching power limiter at a single point in time is not what makes 0-60 or 1/4. With motors and ECU program change you can get way more power around that single peak power point. Just look at the chart of how much space from the power limiter available everywhere except a single dot.

Empirical data without understanding of the mechanism behind is alchemy. M3 doesnt take all that the battery can provide. M3P motors different from LR only in hardware torque limit Of invertor - that only matters until the peak power speed. And certainly when you riding on a direct voltage...

I made a whole post with calculations to answer this question on how you can do it with battery limit. https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/posts/8189048/ Battery voltage influences the power, but not as much as torque limiter and motors back emf from speed.

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Maybe its a later version with better pads and fixed abs program. Anyway, they still feel terrible and overheat easily. Weight doesn't influence braking distance as long as brakes and tires are not overheating. Also, better brakes dont stop car any faster than any other functional brakes...

  31. Mash

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Battery is not the major limitation. You can drop a full second in 0-60 on the same battery.
  32. Mash

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Weight doesn't influence braking distance if brakes are not overheating in a single stop. Only pavement, tires and abs system defines the minimum stopping distance. Wrong suspension geometry can make things worse, but it's a rare thing.

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

We know advertised power limit and voltage. We dont know for sure power curve before and after maximum power speed. We.can guess that the front motor would be similar to m3p, but even that is not certain, since you can drive the same motor differently. Power before and after will be lower than...

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

Plaid brakes and abs are famously not good. If they are fixed - braking and acceleration equally limited by tires so the same time and distance. On the same compound proper brakes have the same brakes performance between cars.

I doubt that 275 makes any difference for 0-60. UHP compound tires like 4S are capable to hold Plaid level acceleration whether they wide or not. Contact patch is still the same and depends on pressure more than on width. Wider tires are for corners stability, track heat dissipation and for...

100% they make it slower on purpose. Motors can take a few seconds of higher torque before they reach battery and motors power limit to have much better 0-60. It's not sustainable, since it will overheat eventually, but it's just 0-60. Sure, on m3p they had electrical current limited by...

I think he talks about aligning travel time, so in such case you have higher loss of energy by driving longer above average speed to compensate longer time below average speed with slow acceleration.
  44. Mash

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

It might work this way on edge cases, but in real life chill mode saves energy per mile even with aligned travel time.
  45. Mash

    Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation

That is incorrect. Higher acceleration usually leads to larger deviations from average speed so it leads to 3 additional energy loss sources: 1. Higher power leads to loss increase through circuits, tires and pinions heating. 2. More periods above average speed - more air and tire friction...
