    Model S REST API

It sounds like managed_charging is for utility demand response or fleet management, which could be pretty interesting (there are already fields for scheduled charging in charge_state - scheduled_charging*) Have you had a chance to try related command names to see what might set the charge current?

Plan: Off grid solar with a Model S battery pack at the heart

Yeah, that was the Wolfram Alpha link I posted. For an interesting amount of storage, you really need something that's basically two extra-deep olympic size pools and at least tens of feet height (ideally more). Given that you're just throwing away the energy right now, even something low...

Plan: Off grid solar with a Model S battery pack at the heart

That looked like a pretty nice hill in the back of one of your pictures - time for some home pumped hydro (and/or home scuba pool)? ;-) http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%28150+ft+*+50+ft+*+50+ft%29+*+%28water+density%29+*+9.86+m%2Fs^2+*+50+ft+in+kWh

In-development: Inexpensive Custom BMS for Tesla Battery Modules

You should definitely get a macrofab.net quote if you were considering professional assembly. Assuming they've fixed some of the issues I ran into (I was a pretty early beta tester), it should only be 15 minutes or so to do enough to get a price. I definitely understand doing it by hand for the...

In-development: Inexpensive Custom BMS for Tesla Battery Modules

For me, i've found the opposite - I can smear paste and skillet reflow the board quickly, so as long as I'm doing enough that I can accept the 10-20% yield fallout from my rather casual technique, SMD is easily faster. I do try to stick with larger SMD components, though - 0805 and QFP. There's...

    Model S REST API

I was just porting my library to the new authentication scheme and I noticed backseat_token and backseat_token_updated_at in the vehicle query result that I hadn't seen discussed before. Presumably those are for the back seat control app that was promised with the executive rear seats.

    Wireless alert for mail box

Shame there's no cell access there... For low bandwidth, low power, and long range, I've heard good things about LoRa, but haven't tried it myself: Extreme Range Links: LoRa 868 / 915MHz SX1272 Module for Arduino, Raspberry Pi and Intel Galileo

    PowerWall technical discussion

In the SolarEdge press release, they say that "The solution will also support upgrading existing SolarEdge systems with the storage solution.", which makes it seem like there's no new hardware needed on the inverter. Since the communication needs to happen even if the grid is down (backup...

PowerWall and "The Missing Piece..." Event

I think you're off by an order of magnitude 10 kWh / 1000 kWh per month is about 7 hours. From looking at my PG&E smart meter data, I seem to average 600-700kWh per month, but looking at the days that I don't charge and don't have significant HVAC loads, it looks like about 10-15kWh, which...

Superchargers in Northern California (location speculation)

I've heard that the new Santa Clara service center is going to be big. If we assume the dot is somewhat imprecise, maybe they'll co-locate some superchargers there like they did with the Salt Lake City location?

    OMG: digitaltim’s delivery story…

My 60 kWh went in for the contactor replacement with a 90% charge around 176 miles and came out with a 90% charge around 183 miles, which is about the same percentage change you describe.

First service appointment 1 month and 2 days from today???

I've had 4 service appointments (counting one scheduled for this week). It's been between 3 and 5 weeks wait, including both appointments where I had a failed door handle. I've put "long wait for appointment" as my feedback after each appointment so far and the response has always been that...

    Door Handle Replacement

The first revision of handles were prone to failing like that, though I would have thought you'd have the second revision with a P85+. Apparently, after two fail, the service center just preemptively replaces all of them - after my second rear handle failed a year after the first one, the...

Supercharger - Petaluma, CA (EXPANDED Jun 2018, now 20 V2 stalls)

From memory, so the actual numbers may be wrong, and can't quite read the numbers from bugeater's pictures. Top is towards the street: 3A 1A 1B 2A 2B 4A 4B 5A 5B 3B The dealer-plate P85D was in 1A so, seeing the 4B/5A alignment, pulled into 1B thinking it'd be on a separate pair - I couldn't...

Supercharger - Petaluma, CA (EXPANDED Jun 2018, now 20 V2 stalls)

I was there early afternoon yesterday probably close to the same time and there were two other cars (one of which was a P85D with dealer plates). I actually got bitten by the odd pairing of the stalls and had to move for full charge rate. The back row and front row pairs are offset by one...

Supercharger - Petaluma, CA (EXPANDED Jun 2018, now 20 V2 stalls)

My experience is that if you tap the T it can trigger an update (I did it on the way home from work today to reload with Petaluma). IIRC, Tesla used to give that as the official workaround to get the slacker credentials back - clear the fields and tap the T to "phone home".

    Model S REST API

From some experimentation, I wonder if Tesla isn't blocking third-party apps, but is just more aggressively rate-limiting the requests. I reset my logger to only update every 10 minutes and it's been running fine for over 24 hours (3 503 responses, but that's pretty normal). This is with the old...

    Supercharger - Manteca, CA - Perimeter Drive (LIVE 12 Feb 2015, expanded 12 Dec 2017, 20 V2 stalls)

Just google the title of the article to get around the paywall. Sounds like the water district serving Manteca wants to become a power company, taking over the PG&E infrastructure in the area.

What happens when Model S sits, unplugged, in cold, for long periods of time?

The warranty text in question is "• Exposing the vehicle to ambient temperatures above 140°F (60°C) or below -22°F (-30°C) for more than 24 hours at a time;" Based purely on that text, we don't care how cold it gets for a brief period of time, but the lowest temperature that will be sustained...

What happens when Model S sits, unplugged, in cold, for long periods of time?

From Threaded Extremes, the lowest daily maximum temperature ever recorded in MSP is -20F on 1/15/1888, which pretty much guarantees there isn't a 24 hour period on record where it was below -22F the entire time (depends on exactly how they define the daily maximum). International Falls is a...

    Pics/Info: Inside the battery pack

For AC charging, the REST API reports the battery current as well as the charger power. If we assume the battery current is measured rather than computed internally and ignoring losses (a less reasonable assumption), then we can get the pack voltage as (charger_voltage * charger_actual_current)...

Get J1772 adapter to pop charge port door

Get J1772 adapter to pop charge port door

That's a very familiar looking plot - you can see the sync pulses at the beginning and I think I see one of the repeats of the manchester-encoded data. Another happy 60 owner here. Have done 2 supercharger road trips and loved it. I'd recommend getting supercharger support - it's such a pleasant road trip car that you may use it more than you initially think, especially with the SCs coming online in Texas as we speak. The range and longer...

    Supercharger - Fremont, CA - Tesla Factory (LIVE, 4 V2 + 8 V3 stalls)

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

Which service center had the loaner for you? I got a Nissan Altima from Menlo Park earlier in the week, which was less interesting to compare and contrast with the Model S :-) To keep this post topical, I was in for a failed door handle and a few minor cosmetic issues (half of which they got to).

Connectivity: What do delivered Production cars have for Wifi and 3G connectivity?

I believe the Audi plan allows the car to act as a WiFi hotspot as well, which the Model S doesn't have right now (the 5.0 WiFi sounds like it goes the other direction). I'm not sure how useful that is, but it'd need to be accounted for in the costs. - - - Updated - - - The original press...

Superchargers to be limited in future? coming to McDonalds?

They're already doing basically this. The superchargers are in pairs and the stacks split the max charge current between them depending on the state of the taper and who plugged in first. In some of their patents, they describe using additional factors for prioritization as well as more flexible...

Superchargers to be limited in future? coming to McDonalds?

Half the car's range seems like way too much given that the superchargers are spaced at 3/4 of a 60kWh range. Even 50 miles would have left me on the J1772 at Gilroy looking forlornly at the superchargers I paid to access coming back from Harris Ranch (there was a headwind). Having frequent...

Told sudden permanent 15 mile loss of range is "normal"

I can see a difference from even light A/C on my city streets commute as long as I'm driving reasonably (too sleepy to drive aggressively on the morning commute). If I have the climate control off and the windows open, I've seen as low at 250 Wh/mi on a 5 mi commute.
