    Autofold mirrors - refreshed Model S, software 2021.12.4.7 25bc808006cf

I replaced my 2018 Model S with a 2021 refreshed Model S. The user-friendliness of the UI has taken a step backward, IMHO. I have set homelink to autoopen the garage door on approach and did NOT turn on Autofold mirrors when nearby. Nevertheless, the mirrors fold when I near my garage and...

    Tesla moments

I've been driving Teslas for four years now. In San Diego it used to be common for people to come over and ask about the car or to be seen taking pictures of the car. Nowadays they're common as dirt around here. Yesterday I was standing at an intersection and four Teslas went through on a...

Quality ? For tesla MS owners (past Toyota/Lexus owners)

I've owned five Lexi, the last two being ls460s. I replaced my latest Lexus with a Model S in 2013. I had a couple of minor early issues but the service center fixed them immediately. I replaced my original Model S with a D when that was introduced and the build quality has been excellent...

Kaleidescape went bankrupt - feeling pessimistic about Tesla today

Kalaidescape wasn't DVD based--they would copy DVDs to hard disk so that you didn't have to keep up with hundreds of disks. There is no resemblance to Blockbuster.

    Tesla Habits ---- argh!

My wife and I were traveling and I was driving a rental ICE. We were leaving our hotel one morning; I slapped my pocket and told my wife "I think I left the keys in the car overnight." Then I realized that if I had left the keys in the car, I had probably left it running. We found it in...

    Old farts reminiscing about computers

IBM 650 Good to run across another 650 programmer. It seems weird that the greatest optimization you could perform to get a program to run faster was by changing the locations where programs and data were stored on the drum memory. My second computer was an IBM1620, then a 709 (another...

    Old farts reminiscing about computers

Old farts? You're a relative whippersnapper. I'm 76 years old and began programming in 1958 on an IBM650 vacuum-tube computer with 2,000 words of rotating drum memory. The PDP-8 is a modern computer compared to that. Computers I've programmed include the IBM650, 1620, 1401, 709, 7090...

Luxury car makers are so screwed

Suspect data Where are you getting your information? Elon recently stated that the Model 3 would come out in 2017 at a price of $35K. That doesn't include incentives, as far as I know. And where did you get the information that the Model S isn't reliable and that the BMW is more...

Tesla-Great electrical and mechanical engineers but poor interior and function design

A question of priorities The Lincoln and Lexus marques have been out for quite some time and they've had time for what we in the SW field sometimes call "creeping excellence." Tesla is implementing things as fast as they can while maintaining software stability--that's a tightrope that...

    Premium Center Console questions

Center Console trim My interior trim is Carbon Fiber. I ordered flex wrap from Amazon (Black 3M DI-NOC Carbon Fiber) and had it installed by a "wrap" shop -- they charged me $20. Now my console matches the trim.

    3M Carbon Fiber wrap interior?

I did the carbon fiber wrap on the piano black console and it blends very well with the Tesla factory carbon fiber. A wrap shop in San Diego charged me a whole $20 to install it and it looks like a factory job.

    BMW 7-series self parking

Self Parking I bought the first Lexus LS430 that offered self-parking. You had to position the car very precisely in the "ready" position adjacent to the parking space and then futz with some outlines on the screen to get the thing to park itself--and even then you had to keep your foot on...

First Tesla Model S crash in China

Remember that virtually all Chinese are first generation drivers. In the western world we grew up riding around in automobiles and most of the rules of the road were internalized before we ever got behind the wheel. Every Chinese driver has to learn from scratch.

MC Red with Xpel Ultimate and CQuartz Finest

I did the same on my MC Red, now nearly fourteen months old. I have the same guy who applied the CQuartz, Wes Waltz, do the washes. He is as meticulous about washing as he was about applying the CQuartz Finest. Every time he completes a wash I'm just blown away by the depth of color...

Why detail? Why not use a regular car wash?

I had never used detailing on my previous cars, including a Lexus LS, but on this jewel I decided to try going "all in." I had my multi-coat red Model S treated by a detailer with CQuartz Finest (CQuartz Nanotech Ceramic Automotive Paint Coating) and it really changed the appearance--the...

Does anyone NOT have a second (ICE) car?

Twice when I was driving my previous car, a Lexus LS460l, I had to transport something larger than the Lexus' minuscule trunk could contain so I rented a pickup truck for the day. Didn't give it a second thought. For some reason, renting a car on the infrequent occasions that some intended...

    Parking sensors

I don't understand people who say their device (computer, car, phone) is obsolete just because something new was announced. It is no slower, less utilitarian, more comfortable, or less beautiful than it was yesterday when it met your needs just fine.

    Electricity Usage

When I got my Model S (P85) I switched to a rate called TOU-2. This Time of Use rate charges me a dramatically lower cost per kwh for usage between midnite and 5am. My total power bill has actually gone DOWN although the total kwh usage is sharply up. I'm on SDG&E.

Question about battery mgmt in hot weather

Battery You might want to consider the 85kwh due to the unlimited warranty: "The warranty includes eight years unlimited mileage for the Model S’s 85 kwh battery pack and eight years or 125,000 miles for the 60kwh pack (whichever comes first)' \

Anyone using San Diego TOU rates, single meter, without solar?

TOU Rates - SDG&E I've got a single meter and switched to TOU rates. I just got my June bill and that reflected my first full month with a P85 model S and the first full month with TOU rates. Unsurprisingly, my KWHs were up quite a bit, but my total bill was down. Not too shabby. That...

Alloy Gators Rim Protection (Pics and info)

Installing Alloy Gators You have to trick the car. While on the jack, stick some sort of flat plate into the door latch to cause it to close (simulating a closed door.) Put the car into jack mode, shift into neutral, and turn the car OFF. The rear wheels will turn.
