Hello, this is very cool and I want to try it on my car. Does anyone have a feel of whether there is any risk of voiding the warranty if Tesla finds out this CAN sniffing is being done...? Or upsetting Tesla in another way? What is their general feel on this activity?

There is a power off software button in the "Safety and Security" menu, this is the one I was referring to. Not sure about the computer cooling being the cause, it is cold here in MN, so I would not expect the computer to need cooling in the winter when the car is idle....
