Radiator duct cleanout. (battery coolant system)

You might want to have your car checked further - my symptoms continued after cleaning the radiator, so I took it in for service. The entire "super bottle" and heat exchanger failed diagnostic testing and were replaced.

    Supercharging slowing down...heat?

I'm envious of your 77kwh Nominal Pack Full number. Mine is 65.8 on a 2018 with 60k miles (I went from 69.0kwh to 65.8 just during this thermal failure incident.)

    Supercharging slowing down...heat?

The powertrain and battery flows did not show anything unusual - my guess is those are the "commanded" numbers not measurements from a sensor. My car, when it failed, would show battery temps near 150f, Passive and Active Cooling at 103, and Battery flow ~25lpm (full blast) and yet the battery...

    Supercharging slowing down...heat?

Agreed, more info - optional for 'advanced' users - would be great. The proper solution however, IMO, is an alert. The car had all the info it needed - ambient temp, battery temp, battery inlet temp, and what "mode" it was in - to estimate expected temp delta through the cooling system. If...

    Supercharging slowing down...heat?

So here's the final on this saga. I was recently able to repeat the road trip from the first post. Sadly I found the charge tapering behavior returned, even though this trip was much cooler than the first - ranging from about 50f to 80f. This time I was also armed with an OBDII scanner and the...

Question for any electricians out there...

Thanks for the reply - you are correct about the breakers in the US. The charger takes that into account. The setting in the charger is for the amperage of the breaker, so in the 50A setting, the charger will supply 42A.

Radiator duct cleanout. (battery coolant system)

The more serious symptom is unusually steep taper when supercharging - especially on hot days with an already warm battery. Recently when I SC on V3, the charge would ramp up to 250kw, then rapidly fall to 40kwh, even with the battery at <50% SOC. I confirmed with a Tesla mobile tech today that...

Radiator duct cleanout. (battery coolant system)

There are clips that hold the condenser to the radiator on the right and left side - near the clips for the cover. If you loosen those clips, there's just enough play in the hoses to separate the condenser and radiation about an inch. This is enough to get in there with skinny tools (I bent a...

Question for any electricians out there...

So hear my (self inflicted) tale of woe... A few years ago I installed a Gen 1 wall charger at a vacation property. Yes, I did it myself and without a permit...shame on me. It's all done properly and to code, or so I thought. This year we installed solar on the same property, and riiight as the...

Trying to buy a mobile charger? Maybe a trick!

So I recently broke a deadfront on my M3. I ordered mobile service, and when I got the initial estimate to approve, it was crazy high - $290. Looking at the invoice it showed about $70 for the deadfront and related labor - very reasonable. But it also had $200 for part UMC #1101798-00-M. What? I...

    Tesla Batteries at High Altitude?

This isn't quite correct, or at least I don't think this analysis applies to modern cars, and I think I know why. First off, air cooling is directly impacted by air density, and at 6000', air density and corresponding heat capacity are reduced by 20% - a significant amount indeed. You might be...

    Supercharging slowing down...heat?

Ah Ha! GtiMart nailed this I think. I followed the directions in the video below to get into the radiator heat exchanger/condenser area, and mine looked much like in the video with lots of leaves and bug parts on top of the condenser. HOWEVER - I found there is a clip on the drivers side that...

Battery overheated on Model 3 LR 2021? [during supercharging]

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread...but I just had an identical experience as yours in my 2018 LRM3. Did you ever figure out what the cause was, other than just heat? Thx

    Supercharging slowing down...heat?

Yes, the cooling was running full blast and seemed to run longer after I finished charging than usual. The cabin cooling worked fine, however. I haven't cleaned the radiator since the AC works fine. Is that a common issue? I'll check to see if it's looking gungy. The car did pre-condition on the...

    Supercharging slowing down...heat?

So I recently took my 2018 LRM3 on a road trip from DFW to Colorado Springs (750 miles, mostly at posted speed limit - 75mph). This is 5 charge stops, 3 V3 (Amarillo, Clayton, Trinidad) and 2 V2 (Henrietta, Childress). I noticed a new behavior this trip (I make this trip several times a year)...

    Supercharger - Clayton, NM

Wow so psyched this is open, and also to learn that V3 was added at Amarillo! That plus Clayton puts the DFW->Denver route very close to ICE travel time, given a reasonable number of stops. The Tesla map still shows Amarillo at 150 - anyone know if the other chargers along this route are V3...
  17. C

    Supercharger - Clayton, NM

There sort of is...since it's billed by time and you'll spend less time on the V3 (I spent 22min to go from 9% to 80% at Waco), the V3 is a bit cheaper. But...you'll start incurring idle time if you charge while eating lunch! ;)

    Supercharger - Clayton, NM

There are already like a dozen level 2 chargers (RV parks, etc) along that route.

AWD Owners - do your feet tingle when preconditioning?

On a recent trip my feet were falling asleep - I attributed it to sitting in the same position for too long. Then my son (who was sitting in the front passenger seat) said his feet felt weird. Coincidentally the car had just started preconditioning for supercharging. I wouldn't have thought...

Want a USED Tesla Wall Connector With 8.5 ft Cable

So question - Do you currently have the 24' cable and are looking for a shorter one? I'm in reverse position...might be able to help each other out.

    Uber with a Tesla

I'm going to disagree with your cost estimate - it's incomplete. You're leaving off depreciation and maintenance (ie, that transmission replacement will come much sooner). Your scenario will, in reality, cost you closer to $1800. Here is AAA's estimates for cost of ownership - the...

    Uber with a Tesla

Yes and this is EXACTLY my point. Lyft/Uber's model depends, to a large degree, on people who do NOT buy a car specifically for ridesharing, and 'don’t factor in the cost per mile of your car.' If the only people who drove for Lyft/Uber were those willing to buy a car specifically for...

    Uber with a Tesla

My estimate is the government's deduction for business vehicles - $.58/mile - so yes $8.12 for 14 miles. It's intended to account for the total cost of an average vehicle including depreciation, fuel, maintenance, tires, insurance, etc. Now you might think the government is being a little overly...

    Uber with a Tesla

Here's how your ride would be priced and paid in my market - a typical large suburban-mix city (ie, not NY, Chicago, or LA. Think Denver, Houston, or Phoenix) Opening the rider app and picking a point 20 miles from the local airport, Lyft would charge $32 to get you there. Assuming the ride...

    Uber with a Tesla

Yes, in most markets (including mine) if you calculate ONLY "active hours of having a fare" - minus expenses, the per-hour wage is below minimum wage. For example, on a recent Sunday, I had an active fare for just over two hours (in driver mode for 3 hours) and drove for 106 miles. My GROSS for...

    Uber with a Tesla

Ah ok. So if you have income from other sources, and your ride-sharing expenses (calculated from the $.58/mile plus related purchases) exceeds your ride-share income, you can't deduct more than the ride-share income? In other words, you can't declare a 'loss' from the business expenses? Good to...

    Uber with a Tesla

Thank you! Here are a couple more things that came to mind. 10. Taxes. Chill on the tax concerns. Lyft doesn't even send a 1099 of any kind until one of two thresholds are crossed: 1. You make more than $20k in ride payments. 2. You receive more than $600 in bonuses (ie, a new driver cashing...

    Uber with a Tesla

I Lyft my M3 have been for the past six months - here are some takeaways from my experience: 1. As many ppl have said, you need to be aware of how the insurance works. When you're not in driver mode, you're on your own insurance obviously. When you're driving and have a rider, you're on the...
