[GUIDE] Automations for Octopus Intelligent with Home Assistant

Just to add, Octopus Intelligent just needs to see that the Tesla is connected to the charger at home, it doesn't need to see charging itself occur, in order to schedule IO charging sessions. The documentation was ambiguous and inferred that the car needed to be plugged in and start to charge...

    Autopilot and slip roads

Just Autosteer, so the car should have just been keeping to it's lane. At times, feedback through the wheel when approaching slip roads gives the impression that the car is thinking about it, then decides to stay in lane. I've done 1600 ish miles so far this month and I'd say it's done it...

    Autopilot and slip roads

Just recently, since 2020.20.8 I think, autopilot has taken to erratically veering left to take a slip road, all by itself, when it's engaged on dual carriageways. It does it violently enough to raise serious complaints from passengers, and causes a sweve by the time I've snatched the steering...

Charging at hotels, caravans, guesthouses, cabins etc with 3 pin plug

Juat stayed at an AirBnB that advertised EV charging on the listing but there wasn't any provision at all, which I thought was pretty unfair. I took the listing as full permission to use my 2.5mm extension and charge at 10A overnight. We've been away for almost a week now, have used Tesco free...

IFTTT with TeslaFi to soak up excess solar generation?

My experience with IFTTT is that it's pretty slow and unreliable for doing anything in near real time. I use Home Assistant and have the car and PV integrated in to that. Bear in mind that the minimum charging rate of the car is 6A, so it's quite easy to end up drawing from the mains, depending...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

I'd love to have a play with hydro-electric. There are some pretty creative off-grid solutions, etc. Unfortunately, the nearest stream is about 300m away and it's not mine. A consistent 500w doesn't sound much but it will do a very good job of taking away the day-to-day background load, as you...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

The nice think with the immersion heater controller is that it's a very easy retrofit. The battery powered CT on the main supply cable has lasted about 3 years for us on a single battery, and the controller in the airing cupboard is a simple box to fit in the immersion heater supply cable.

I think our roof angle is 35°, so similar. Optimisers will sort out the DC string issue. 👍

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

Yup, very similar area, Adderley is about 9 miles away. Are all of those panels on a single inverter/single string? Has the system got panel optimisers or similar? A single DC string will not enjoy having those NW panels on the same string as the SE panels. Roof pitch is important. Our PV...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

That's true, but our frequency of showering/bathing doesn't really go up or down throughout the year. It's definitely the case that we can produce more energy than we can store as hot water, in the summer. I've got the thermostat set high on the immersion heater, so the energy storage is as...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

With a Tesla, you're still limited to 6 A, so the same issues still apply. Also, 6A charging is less efficient than 32A charging.

For how much net gain, and at what cost? What's the payback period? Granted, the recent pricing has improved that, but it's still not short.

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

For those with a hot water tank, using the immersion heater to use excess PV output, rather than return it to the mains, is absolutely the most cost effective solution. I've got 300 L of 'battery' that provides all of our hot water (5 - 6 kWh per day, typically) for the summer months, without...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

For anyone considering PV specifically for charging an EV, bear in mind that the minimum charging current for the Model 3 is 6 A, or around 1.4 kW. The base load of our house is around 300 W, rising to 500 W when a fridge or freezer is on, etc. (edit, around 170 - 180 W when the house is quiet...

Yup we've done it this way round at times, it can work well.
  24. LukeUK

Why I’m not keen on "Super-Fast" Super chargers

Absolutely agree. At Rugby, I end up going out to move the car across to a non-charging space, whilst my wife and kids finish up and follow me out. I don't pre-heat because I don't want to use energy to make this problem worse.

Charging efficiency and basis for payment

A 'home charger' is EVSE - 'Electric vehicle supply equipment'. It's not doing any charging. Crackling when plugging car in to charge

My guess is either the relay/contactor is sticking, or the control circuit/hardware that handshakes with the car is faulty. 5 minutes with a multimeter would answer a lot of questions, but it's not a good idea to go poking around with a meter unless you know what you're doing. If you need to...

Charging with no home charger is just as expensive as petrol?

Yup, charging away from home, especially using CCS, is comparable, if not more expensive, than fuel, especially in winter. If you assume 250 Wh/mile, 40 p/kWh is 10p/mile. If you assume 300 Wh/mile, 40 p/kWh is 12p/mile. Bear in mind that Tesla charge for DC out of the supercharger, where as...

    545 mile day tomorrow

325 Wh/mile today, 2020 Model 3 LR (so pre-heatpump), heating on at 19.5 degrees, outside temp was 8 degrees, rained pretty much the whole way, cruise control set at 70 but average speed was more like 55-60 due to traffic.

    545 mile day tomorrow

If there are superchargers (or other CCS chargers) on the route and you have a normal bladder, it'll turn out fine 👍. My experience, with a family of four, is that someone needs a wee before the car needs a charge. We've done 400 ish miles in a day with two charges.

    V11 - what’s your verdict?

Having just driven 220 miles this morning, the blind spot camera view is completely 100% pointless. The view is blocked by my hand (which has to be there, on the indicator stalk), and even if it wasn't, it's too low down for your eyes to flick to in between looking at the mirrors. As I've...

    V11 - what’s your verdict?

I know the normal reaction to change is a negative one, but I can't help but feel that this update has focused on the wrong things. It feels less intuitive, more touches required to get to features you need when you're driving isn't smart. It's frustrating that simple things like a phone book...

Best Stopping Mode for Motorway Driving?

TeslaFi and the other apps are great for this. It's interesting to see the change in efficiency due to both speed and temperature. Driving everywhere at 80 in the middle of winter isn't a good combination for achieving the stated range....:D

Best Stopping Mode for Motorway Driving?

Don't confuse the stopping mode with what's actually going on. 'Having to hold your foot in one position' isn't using more energy. F = ma, Newton's second law, is all this comes down to. To accelerate the car against the various forces trying to resist that acceleration, you need to add force...

Delivery without USB-C ports and wireless phone charging

Go on then. Whilst it's frustrating, the issue is widespread and you do still have a choice. Accept the car or don't. Also, you might get lucky and have them. There have been a few posts of US owners getting the missing parts retrofitted on their drive, so it is do-able and it is happening.

    Relieved didn't buy a Standard Range M3

The BMS calculated a better approximation of the battery capacity, the more readings it can take across various states of charge. Always charging back up to the same SOC doesn't help it do this.

    Relieved didn't buy a Standard Range M3

I've had a 'you're frequently charging to > 90%, this isn't a great thing to do' message pop up a few times, typically when we've been away for the weekend, with work trips either side of the weekend, meaning I need to charge a fair bit.

Charging at 16amps only with Rolec 22kw charger

    Thanks for clarifying. Makes sense.
  40. LukeUK

Charging at 16amps only with Rolec 22kw charger

    32 A x 230 V = 7.36 kW on single phase 16 A x 400 V x root 3 = 11.09 kW on three phase Ignoring power factor, which will be pretty close to 1, something like 0.98-0.99 at a guess.

Any way to split out home charging from regular energy bill?

Specifically only if you're paying 5p/kWh, which would be true for Octopus go, but won't work if your charging during the normal day rate etc.
  42. LukeUK

    Relieved didn't buy a Standard Range M3

75% efficiency isn't far off what I'd expect for 6 degrees, based on my TeslaFi data. Maybe a bit closer to 80% would fit the data I have for my M3LR. Did you have sentry on whilst you were at your destination?

UMC plug and socket getting warm

If you're charging somewhere for the first time, it's worth stopping the charge after 30 mins or so, unplugging the plug and feeling the prongs. If they're anything more than warm, don't keep using the socket. The poor connection is less likely to be between the prongs of the plug and the...

If the car is awake, it's equivalent to an ICE car sat there with the engine idling. The entire car is powered up and ready to go. It's the same with Sentry. Definitely this. I can't get through the services as quickly as the car can charge on a supercharger. When we're travelling as a family, I have at times had to go and move the car because we're not ready to go yet.
