    S70D investor implications

Agreed, the announcement of the 70D was the first real sign from Tesla that they are able to start moving up the demand curve. Very encouraging.

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2015

Thanks, then if my math is right, the Volt can draw as high as 12C! Hope one of the battery tech guys chimes in, I know this is the wrong thread though. I feel the mods circling.

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2015

Volt must be able to drawdown power from the batteries at faster than 4C. 10kWH*4C = 40,000 watts /745 watts/Horsepower = 53.7 Horsepower. Unless you are happy driving 54 HP ;)

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2015

It's also important to keep in mind that there is a minimum battery pack size necessary to send enough power from batteries to electric motor for electric motor to achieve its full HP number. I forget what it is offhand, but I think batteries are limited to discharge at maximum of about a 4C...

    TSLA Introduction for the Uninitiated

It was pre-empting some posts that I'm sure will come, just wanted to get it on the first page in case this becomes a main thread. - - - Updated - - - I assumed from the title of the thread that this was a starting place for non-sophisticated investors. I think you're giving the average...

    Tracking short interest

Yes, that's annualized. During the great squeeze of April/May 2013 the rate peaked at over 100% annualized. Was nice having TSLA pay a 100% dividend out of the pockets of the shorts.. If zero shares are truly available across all brokers, then the rate can get pretty volatile. GPRO was a...

    Tracking short interest

Wow, no shares available at IB as of now. 90K this morning. The lending rate hasn't gone up yet. If this is for real, then the rate should go up tomorrow. Otherwise could be just a temporary TSLA shortage at IB. - - - Updated - - - For reference, IB had 3.5M TSLA shares available on...

PSA: Beware of members pushing new investors to purchase Leap Call Options. I have seen many members lose their shirts over the years doing that. Also, please do not sell Leap Put options, I lost my shirt in AAPL doing that a few years ago.

    TSLA Introduction for the Uninitiated

I see a lot of people throwing out this $700B in ten years number. I don't want potential investors to get ahead of themselves. $700B is the best-best case scenario, with perfect execution. Even with perfect execution and no further capital raises required. I think it's important to keep in...

    No Model III until 2019?

Thanks, I signed up for e-mail updates at that link regarding Bolt developments. Hoping GM is serious, nothing like some competition to prevent a Model 3 delay.

    No Model III until 2019?

This was the most important tid-bit that came out of the call for me. They are going to make a serious effort to not track the Model 3 on Tesla Time. Consciously saving more time-consuming "radical" design ideas for later models on the GenIII platform. Personally, a smaller Model S with...

Rumor: P85D firmware update to increase 0-60 performance to 2.8s

Just had thought of how Tesla could gradually unlock top-speed ability for new deliveries to minimize risk of drivers being unable to handle it. Similar to going up levels in video games. I.e. Perform at least ten 0-60 runs at 3.2 in Insane mode before Ludicrous mode unlocked.

Would also add the data-point that Tesla still claims new Model X orders will get delivered early 2016. With a 20,000 car backlog that implies significant X deliveries in 2015.

My 2 day old P85D suddenly died in the middle of an intersection

Guess Tesla decided to go lead-acid 12v to save on cost? Seems silly, but it is a $500 battery according to quick google search. I'm guessing that Tesla is working on developing their own 12v lithium replacement instead of buying from supply chain.

    Tesla Gigafactory Investor Thread

Agreed techmaven! Admins, maybe we could have wiki-post that tracks the current status of the Gigafactory? Could be updated based on pictures posted to forum, in similar fashion that Model S/X tallies were updated based on reservation numbers posted to the forums? I envision coloring in the...

    Tesla Gigafactory Investor Thread

Based on the assumption that each orange foundation marker is 10 yards apart, I am estimating 300 feet by 1500 feet is the black line space. That would be one 'module' of 450,000 square feet. 10 modules with two floors would get them to ~10M square feet. Those distances also line up with # of...

    Tesla Gigafactory Investor Thread

I think you mis-labeled the distances on your black lines, supposed to be other way around? Just from eyeballing the dirt truck in bottom right corner that is at least 30ft long, parked parallel to the 271 foot line, could easily line up 10 of those and not get very far down the line. Thanks!

    Gas prices

It would be really difficult to put on that large of a short position without it going public. Additionally, most exchanges require that large traders report their positioning, which is aggregated and distributed via weekly market summaries such as: http://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/petroleum_sf.htm

Tesla Investor's General Macroeconomic / Market Discussion

I agree there will be some contagion/cascading effects. However, it is different that 2008 mortgage-crisis. 1) The debts that will go bad are rated BBB or lower, not AAA as the mortage bonds were. This implies a different class of investor (presumably more sophisticated). 2) Not drilling an...

    Supercharger growth

@vgrinshpun, I agree with your speculation above. The BMW/Tesla negotiations became public when Elon tweeted about them a couple weeks ago. By the time Elon tweeted about the potential deal, I think he knew the deal would fall through. May as well generate some press around the potential...

    No Model III until 2019?

Agreed that they already "know" what they want to make from a power/drivetrain perspective. As MassModel3 mentioned, the base model will be front wheel drive with 188 Hp or 221 Hp motor. Has anyone calc'd out what KwH battery (at current densities) would be needed to get 300 miles rated range...

I recently folded and bought my first car, as I can't wait until 2019/2020 to have a car. Bought a used 2013 Hyundai Sonata, will drive it until GenIII becomes a reality.

    China Market situation and outlook

Recent Strong dollar helps. In "today's Euros" more likely. On the conference call he said if you are in Europe and thinking of buying, buy now as 7% price increase due to currency movements is in order.

    Tesla Gigafactory Investor Thread

Very true. Much cheaper to generate electrons locally, or 'ship' short distances if needed than oil. I think people need to start thinking about this in terms of increasing societal efficiency, starts to make sense when viewed from that angle.
  41. G

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2014

I believe it has more to do with controlling power to all 4 wheels at the millisecond time frame. Adding more electric motors would not improve things from here.
  42. G

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2014

I look forward to the day that as sign as the light goes green at an intersection all cars accelerate at once at an equal rate of acceleration. Think this would reduce non-highway congestion immensely. No need for more lanes.
  43. G

    Gigafactory Financial Modeling

I agree that internal transfer pricing is a very complex subject, I am not an expert on the matter. If Tesla wants to 'sell' these batteries internally at the same price that they sell them to other car manufacturers that would just transfer profit center from Fremont to Nevada.
  44. G

    Gigafactory Financial Modeling

jhm, I think you are onto something. Doubling capacity from retained earnings every 24-36 months is a powerful concept, but it is what is needed to for the EV industry to grow enough to replace ICE in this century. I think you should ignore contract pricing for now as it is too complex...

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2014

chickensevil, I just realized there probably won't be a Model III reveal until later in the design cycle than S/X reveals. Since they are planning on testing limits of S/X demand it doesn't make sense to show off cheaper product that could cannibalize those sales.
