Connected Solutions Real-World Experiences (MA - National Grid / EverSource)

For the 7/6 event, my PW stopped sending power to the grid at 25% (compared to 20% for the other events), anyone else seeing that? Discharge kWh was ~1 less than other events (19.8kWh on 7/6, ~21kWh others).

Yea, was more tongue in cheek comment that this probably won’t count towards the export average and as you said there isn’t any kWh payment in place.

A whopping $286 here (2PW, Eversource East) since my installer ****ed up and only submitted my application in July. Very interested in what other Eversource folks are getting to go back to the installer for compensation.

From HVAC to Heat Pumps - kWh usage

Your info is a bit outdated. Many air source heat pumps are perfectly fine going down well below 0F (see the Mitsubishi Hyperheat units), and how do they not work above 100F?

Could Stormwatch have somehow increased my Powerwall capacity?

Do you use your batteries during the day too? If not, just tap on the Powerwall icon in the app and see how much energy was discharged.

Does anyone have a list of all of the events and their durations for Eversource (MA, East)? My installer screwed up and never sent in the Connected Solutions paperwork, so I was only able to join towards the end of August. Trying to figure out how much their screw-up cost me. I reached out to...

Battery 4 hour storage limit [Utility scale storage]

So the batteries allow for storage of energy from when there is low demand to help offset periods of high demand, thereby helping to flatten the demand curve. The point of this thread is unclear at best (I think we need OP to chime back in before stating that conclusively). If the point of the...

Battery 4 hour storage limit [Utility scale storage]

Who are “they”, and what is “the battery storage system” that “they” are talking about?
  13. Z

Battery 4 hour storage limit [Utility scale storage]

It all depends on the discharge rate. Using 100% of one battery at a time before moving on to the next doesn’t make the site last longer. For example, you have 10 10kWh batteries (so 100kWh total capacity), and are discharging at 5kW. It takes 2 hrs for each battery to drain (10kWh / 5kW = 2hr)...

Just gotta make sure you’re always going downhill in regen mode…
  16. Z

Using EV's as emergency supplements to Powerwall?

Yea, pretty sure they are using a CCS plug on the units to pull DC from the pack to an inverter on the wall. I guess the cable also has the AC pins for slow charging, so there’s got to be some more complex communication between the wall unit and the truck.

Single Powerwall Backup Entire 200amp panel?

I’m not sure I’d use the presence of the slider as proof that it works. Have you tried testing it off-grid? I have the slider in my app as well, but no Tesla EV nor Tesla charger.

    Potential Storm Watch Issue

Are you sure about this? I would think that there would be a set of CTs wired to the other 200A panel so the Gateway could report accurate consumption data. Assuming that you aren’t running at 100% backup, do you always see power flowing from the grid when solar is unable to cover the entire...
  19. Z

Single Powerwall Backup Entire 200amp panel?

On the AC side, it’s possible to wire a relay to the gateway so that when the power is out the AC won’t run. Now if that’s an ok limitation for you, it’s a path forward without having to put in a new panel. Not so sure on the EV side (especially if you don’t have a Tesla EV).

    Potential Storm Watch Issue

Even when the house is being powered by the PowerWalls, it’s not isolated from the grid. I’m not sure how that would impact surge protection at all.

Santa Clara County retroactively Changing ESS Rules

Yea, the PW portion of the PW+ is just a standard PW2. The “+” is the smaller box above which combines the functionality of the gateway and an inverter into a single unit. That would be paired with a meter ring disconnect to isolate the house from the grid, or another gateway where the meter...

Tesla Solar in Houston & Surrounding Area’s

Powerwalls should last for more than 10 years, that’s just the warranty period. However, even considering a longer period, they may not make financial sense. Only you can decide if the non-financial aspects make it worth it. Unrelated, but solar arrays are measured in kW not kWh. A kW is an...

Drastic spikes during peak production hours

Do you have a Tesla inverter? I remember some threads here a little while back with people having Tesla inverters that didn’t have adequate coolant levels which would cause them to overheat and drop production.

Did Tesla instal your Solar/PW? I had 2 PWs installed by a 3rd party at the end of last year, and am told that I’m registered for ConnectedSolutions with Eversource, but don’t see that callout in my app.

You have solar tied PWs that also charge from the grid!? That’s unicorn status from what I’ve read. I have no idea on the tax side of things, but I am sure that there are a bunch of people who are interested in how you managed to get both solar and grid charging powerwalls in the US.

Tesla Powewall's Vehicle Charging when Off-Grid setting. Can't set to 100%

Just tried to change mine to 100% home use, but when I go back into the settings menu it has dropped down to 90%. No idea what’s going on, but another datapoint Edit: well now that I posted that it would only go to 90%, it now goes to 95%… maybe with this edit it will allow for 100% 🤞

Solar Edge Inverter update seems to have killed output

So the firmware release notes have no reference to Tesla or AC coupled batteries, but the front line customer service guy talked about all battery systems despite seeing the same release notes…? I know who I would believe, and it’s not the guy you talked to. I’m going with Occam’s razor on...

Solar Edge Inverter update seems to have killed output

I’m assuming that this is the firmware update? If so, PWs aren’t mentioned at all. There indeed may be more communication, especially between the SE inverters and the SE Energy Bank (or the other DC coupled systems). I’m guessing the SE customer rep was confused by the differences between the...

Solar Edge Inverter update seems to have killed output

If you’re on grid, nothing. The only communication is the frequency change. Since you have two GW and two inverters, I’d guess that there was an issue with the update or update procedure with the inverters, and some combination of time/being shut down caused them to work again. That’s the...

Master Thread: Energy products and Tax discussions

Exactly. Personally I’m pretty risk adverse when it comes to pushing the line with the IRS, but I agree 100%. Is it likely that one would get audited? No, but based on the language I don’t think that the IRS would share the same view that the credit would apply to that total balance.
  44. Z

Master Thread: Energy products and Tax discussions

From that link: “Components such as a roof's decking or rafters that serve only a roofing or structural function do not qualify for the credit.” Non-active solar-roof tiles serve only as a roofing/structural function, no?
  45. Z

Master Thread: Energy products and Tax discussions

I don’t think it is that ambiguous. The non-active tiles in a solar roof are just roofing materials, so I can’t think of any reason why they would be included. If someone had a 20 year old roof that was in ok shape but decide to re-roof before putting solar panels on, they don’t get to claim the...
  46. Z

Master Thread: Energy products and Tax discussions

To me that reads that the active tiles are fully eligible, but that doesn’t say anything about the non-active tiles. I’m not sure what argument could be made on the event of an audit that taking the credit on non-active sections/planes would be ok given the IRS guidance.

AC Compressor (109 LRA) doesn't need SureStart? (2 x PowerWalls and Backup Gateway 2)

The AC will draw less currant in that instant that they are starting up, but the overall draw will still be the same while running. So the only way that the powerwalls last longer is if that instantaneous inrush current is causing additional wear and tear and you are talking about the lifespan...

Would you do a solar roof in Western MA... Geothermal already installed, Model 3 on its way.

Ok, makes sense. To your original question, I wouldn’t recommend a solar roof, but that’s more due to the horror stories I’ve read here about Tesla’s customer service. I can understand not wanting panels on the roof of a historical house, do you have space for a ground-mount system? Might be...

Would you do a solar roof in Western MA... Geothermal already installed, Model 3 on its way.

For the cap, if your system is under 10kW AC you automatically get net metering. If you’re over 10kW, you have to apply for cap space to get net metering. From that list, National Grid doesn’t have any cap space, so I don’t think you’d get net metering and therefore would have different sell/buy...
