    Parking lot accident, need advice!

Recently my beloved Model S was struck in a parking lot. Another car attempted to cut a corner around me and scraped across my rear right. There is some significant gouging in the rear bumper cover, as well as the edge of the trunk lid - see pics below. No damage anywhere else that I can tell...

    List of 120kW Superchargers

Here are all the SCs that I noted during my recent East-to-West road trip. I forgot to note several of them, but here's what I've got: Somerset, PA: 120 kW Macedonia, OH: 90 kW Mishawaka, IN: 120 kW La Crosse, WI: 120 kW Albert Lea, MN: 120 kW Mitchell, SD: 90 kW Murdo, SD: 120 kW Rapid City...

Cross country trip to start a job at Tesla!

Last day! Our last leg last night was Kingman - Barstow, 209 miles. We did it in 322 Wh/mi, no problems. There was a major headwind at the end so we were driving just under the speed limit for our first conservative experience with this route. We leave Barstow around 9. Approximate ETAs are...

Cross country trip to start a job at Tesla!

Sorry we missed you, Steve. We've made it to Moab and met some cool people along the way. Tomorrow we hit Blanding, Farmington, Gallup, Holbrook, and Flagstaff, hopefully. I know we could go straight to Flagstaff from Blanding, but we actually want to see Four Corners and some sights in New...

Cross country trip to start a job at Tesla!

Guys, thanks for all the well wishes. We're in Wisconsin tonight. Tomorrow we go through Mauston, Onalaska, Albert Lea, Worthington, Mitchell, and Murdo. It's going to be a long day! I have lots of comments and info about the trip and some thoughts on early autopilot features that I would have...

Cross country trip to start a job at Tesla!

In a couple hours, I am leaving my home in Maryland to start a cross-country drive in my Model S 85. A few months ago, I started interviewing at Tesla and got a job offer this January in their Autopilot autonomous driving program. Our first stop will be at the Somerset supercharger around...

Car washes near DC/Montgomery County MD?

Does anyone have a favorite car wash for their Model S near Montgomery County, MD? I've been hand washing up to now, but it's finally too cold and the salt from the Maryland snow storms is starting to get to me.

In a gas car, the kill switch is called "the key".

Wireless front parking camera with monitor for front bumper protection

Since you're using a relay on the PCB, there's lots of ways it could be done, even if you can't access the "reverse wire" (is there is such a thing?) You could detect current through the reverse lights and use that signal to switch the relay.

Wireless front parking camera with monitor for front bumper protection

I'm working with an Omnivision camera chip at work and part of my job is to develop firmware for setting the registers, talking to the camera, etc. I agree with the previous posters that the Pic is probably setting the registers over the I2C bus. We wouldn't have to actually intercept these...

    Thoughts on hypermiling the Tesla

Here's a related question. Are there driving techniques unique to the MS that you can't do with other electric vehicles? I'm thinking that since the regen is tied to the go pedal instead of the brake, there are special considerations for the Tesla.

    Normal Model S Sounds

How about funny sounds after you park? When I get out of the car in the evening in the garage, I can hear high-pitched whining sounds. I've assumed it's part of the battery cooling system or maybe just the AC compressor still running, but it doesn't sound nice.

    Charging in Ocean City, MD?

This is what I was thinking, if you have to stop to charge along the way. The total time will be shorter stopping at the Delaware SC. The problem is it's 114 miles from the DE SC to Ocean City. Even if you get a full range charge at the SC, which will take longer, you'll still have to charge...

Product Idea: Control external hardware through the touchscreen

Can someone with 5.0 do a quick test? Connect the car to your home wifi network, then unplug your router's internet connection. Or connect to your cell phone's wifi network, then turn off your phone's 3G/4G data connection. What does the Tesla browser do in this case? Can you still access the...

Product Idea: Control external hardware through the touchscreen

D'oh, good point. I forgot this might break slacker and other 3G access, although I suppose it depends on how the browser handles requests that aren't found by the local wifi router. I suppose you could keep wifi turned off unless you want to access the local hardware, but that's obviously less...

Wireless front parking camera with monitor for front bumper protection

Great idea. I think it will work, but it depends on what the browser supports. Anyone know if it will display any kind of dynamic data? And will TeslaOS (is that what we're calling it?) 5.0 display local web pages? - - - Updated - - - I moved this discussion to a separate thread, so please...

Product Idea: Control external hardware through the touchscreen

This idea came about in the front camera threads, but I wanted to break it out for a separate discussion. Now that we have wifi with software 5.0, we should be able to access locally-hosted web pages (can anyone confirm this?). I've got an idea to build a small pcb with some general purpose...

Electronic Engineer needed to design circuit for switching front and rear cameras

Cross-post from the original thread that started this, in case people are following this now. I'm a robotics engineer and interested in helping. For full touchscreen integration, I think we can use a web app running in the web browser. If you have version 5.0 of Tesla OS, you can access web...

Wireless front parking camera with monitor for front bumper protection

I'm an electrical/mechanical engineer working in robotics and I just found this thread. Very excited to see the progress so far. I came to offer a suggestion for integrating switching into the touchscreen. We can control a lot of other in-car devices this way too. With firmware 5.0, we finally...

    My beautiful baby.. Sigh

Probably also a higher percentage of the population taking public transport, especially in DC. What we need is some metric of accidents normalized by speed and miles driven.

If I use my own Slacker account, will I lose functionality?

I know the app won't support premium features as a user interface, but if I use a premium account, do we know if on demand will work as intended? Or are we SOL with the current Tesla implementation, regardless of the account type we use?

If I use my own Slacker account, will I lose functionality?

I think my question was not clear for some reason. We know for certain that the Tesla app is designed for Slacker PLUS, not Slacker Premium. This has been confirmed by Tesla. But for some reason, we DO get "play songs on demand" functionality. Is this a bug?

If I use my own Slacker account, will I lose functionality?

Just picked up my Tesla last week!! I'll post a delivery report later, having too much fun right now. I'd already read the manual many times, but there's nothing like playing with the interface in person to learn new things and come up with new questions. I'd really like to have my own custom...

    Charging near Ocean City Maryland?

Have not been there, but from what I understand most campground owners won't understand "NEMA 14-50". You should ask them if they have "50 Amp Service" instead. My dad owns a campground and they have both 50-amp service (NEMA 14-50) and 30-Amp service (NEMA TT-30).

Paint protection - so many questions!

I have never owned an expensive car before and I'm learning a lot here about all the things I might want to do to take care of it. Front license plate - does it actually affect Wh/mi?

Apologies if I've missed previous data on this one - has anyone actually performed a controlled experiment testing the differing drag forces with and without a front license plate? Does a front plate affect the drag enough that your Wh/mi show noticeable increase? Is there any difference between...

    Model S - Window Tinting

Can anyone comment on tint laws as you drive from state-to-state? I have never gotten tint before but am strongly considering Photosync. I live in Maryland, where they require at least 35% transmission. What happens if you drive to another state? Are you bound by their laws, or just the laws...

Neighborhood too modest for model s?

I don't have my model S yet, and I'm really dreading people asking "How much does it cost?", especially my relatives and my out-of-work neighbor. It's really hard for people to wrap their minds around how different the total ownership cost is, what with differences in gas, maintenance, tax...

    Model S: Clever Vanity Plates

I thought about "NT KIX TE" to describe this relationship, but it's a little convoluted, esp. since it would show up as "NTKIXTE"

Does it fit in the garage?

I like the rear camera trick. Still waiting on delivery of my Model S but I think it's a great plan - I'll draw a line on my garage floor for the camera. However, I also bought one of these from Amazon. It's like the hanging tennis ball trick, but a little more techy. I'll use this to align...

    Polite, safe and effective drafting

Discoducky, can you elaborate on this "correct", "ninja-like" way to do drafting? All I know about drafting is "drive close to the car in front of you", which I've always thought was dangerous. How do you do it correctly/safely?

    Courtesy info supercharging station

I don't fully understand why this is necessary. I'm currently waiting on delivery of my Model S, so I don't have the perspective of real-world use, but in my opinion you should only park at a SC for as long as you need to charge. You should monitor your status and move the car after it is full...

    Financing decisions

Don't know what's best for you, but here are a couple thoughts that I considered. First of all, having offers in hand from Alliant, PenFed, and others will let you negotiate the Tesla rate (which is actually Wells Fargo and some other lender, if I recall correctly). I think some people on the...

Just gave Tesla my deposit: Need help!!

I am not a "car guy". I'm a tech geek (robot engineer). When I went for a test drive, the Tesla rep, a self-described "car guy" said that he thought the best option for the money was the S85+air suspension. Depending on what your previous cars have been, the S85 is going to be the most amazing...

Help! I need to finance for 90k

Alliant only approved me for $70k with a great rate, but USAlliance and Bank of America both approved for $90k. Wells Fargo wanted a $30k-$50k downpayment ("because the Tess-uh-luh is an unknown vehicle", said the loan rep). Yikes! Haven't called back Alliant yet to see if they'll match, but it...

Credit union will only finance up to $70K. Help!

Quick follow-up: I contacted a few other places - USAlliance and Bank of America, and both had no problem approving me for $90k+. I'll probably go with Alliant anyway for the better rate, but if anyone is in a similar situation try those lenders!

New owner in Montgomery County, MD! Looking for recommendations...

I finalized my order for an S85 with all the options (except jump seats) this weekend. I am ridiculously excited. This is about 3x more than I've ever spent on a car, but after our test drive my wife and I can't get rid of the Tesla grin. Now begins the agonizing wait for delivery. In the...

    Charging in Ocean City, MD?

I'm vacationing in Ocean City, MD in late August, and expecting to have my brand new Model S 85 kWh by then!! It would make a great first road trip. I live near Baltimore, MD. I normally travel over the Bay Bridge to OC, but I could travel via the DE supercharger instead if necessary. It's 115...

Credit union will only finance up to $70K. Help!

I bank with Capital One and ING (Now also Cap One, but I still call them by their old name). ING doesn't have auto loans, and Capital One had never even heard of Tesla when I called. They were astounded at the price tag and said their standard maximum loan is $40k. I thought this would be a...

Credit union will only finance up to $70K. Help!

I know it's pointless to complain about how the financing world works, but I had no idea there was a separate "auto loan" credit score. It seems crazy to me that I am essentially a credit risk of 0, but because I have never purchased an expensive car, I cannot get a loan to purchase an expensive...

Credit union will only finance up to $70K. Help!

I don't have an edit option for some reason. I suppose I was a bit sensational to attract readers, but I was rejected for the offer that many, many other people seem to be getting. I'm in the "not a car guy, never bought an expensive car before" camp. Are expensive cars just the norm for people...

Credit union will only finance up to $70K. Help!

After extensive discussions with my spouse and hours spent pouring over spreadsheets to make sure we wouldn't become car poor with the most expensive vehicle we've ever purchased, we put in our reservation on Teslamotors last night. Awesome!! Now to check for financing options... I read on the...
