MASTER THREAD: Auto Wiper functionality, complaints, praise, etc.

I've had cars with auto wipers as old as 2003. They've all worked exceptionally well. They've all had a sensitivity setting for how easily they're triggered. The Tesla's are by far the worst - sometimes non functional auto rain sensing wipers I've ever used. Simply put, if they can't manage to...

Locked, Zero% battery, frunk trick with 12V battery (A23) did not work

If your doors won't unlock it sounds like the issue is with your 12v battery, not the main pack. I also couldn't get my frunk to open with a normal battery (or battery charger). If you happen to have an actual 12v car battery that should do the trick though.

    Work From Home Charging

Hey welcome. Great choice of cars, you won't regret it. We moved last year and for about 5 months I used 110v charging until I got around to installing my wall connector. I, too, work from home and found it to be more than adequate. You can change what level you want your car to charge to from...

My Model 3 was attacked in my drive way.

Contact the news or TMZ. Sell the rights to the video to help cover the repair or replacement... and sue/charge the individual that did it. Whether they have the means to pay for it or not, this type of thing shouldn't happen without repercussions.

Underbody of the battery bent from impact

I've seen test video where they run over trailer hitches with no damage. I think it was a model S though.

Underbody of the battery bent from impact

Are you sure? I could have sworn I read the packs are modular. $10k euros for an entirely new 75kw or so pack is less than I'd have guessed.
  7. C

Underbody of the battery bent from impact

Sorry to hear about that. I'm curious - is that quote for a single pack or the entire battery? If I remember correctly there are 3-4 different packs that make up the battery.

12 volt battery dies without warning

I think it's more of the fact that when it does die, you can't open the doors or do anything with the car. If it happens in an ICE car there is a straight forward procedure to unlock doors, open the hood, etc. Not to mention you can jump start the car to avoid having it towed for something as...

Surfer Asking: Driving Without A Passenger Seat? Will the TM3 Throw a Fit?

I assume you can't just push the passenger seat as far back as it will go and then lean it forward as far as it goes + remove the headrest? Regarding your original question - I can't say for sure with Tesla but with my previous car (996 Porsche) there were instructions to disconnect the battery...

M3P high speed performance [doesnt pull much after 70 mph?]

Good point. The trap speeds also help tell the story.
  11. C

M3P high speed performance [doesnt pull much after 70 mph?]

You're absolutely correct. I traded from a 911 and above 70 the M3P is a bit of a let down. It isn't a slouch by any means, but compared to it's insane acceleration prior to 70 it feels slow. I suspect that getting some lighter wheels would make a difference. The 20" wheels are notoriously heavy...

Should I lower it or leave it?

It does look really nice lowered with the 20s!

Model 3 SR+ showing 166 miles at 80% charge.. is that right?

I've always considered EPA MPG ratings as an "apples to apples" comparison for consumers to evaluate the efficiency between different makes and models, not a truth in actual real world use. The same applies for EV range. The test conditions should be identical so that there is a proper...
  14. C

    Winter performance

You can have your cake and eat it too. The range drop in the M3P is related to the massive wheels. In fact, there are "stealth" performance variants that come with 19" and smaller wheels that get the extended range WITH the added power and speed.
  15. C

    Winter performance

The Tesla traction control and stability management is out of this world. Even on bald summer performance tires I was able to power up a very steep snow covered hill with no effort. Stopping, on the other hand, proved to be the challenge. With winter tires, it will be a tank. I have an M3P btw.
  16. C

Model 3 SR+ showing 166 miles at 80% charge.. is that right?

A couple more thoughts on this... First, when doing a comparison between EPA mpg and range in ICE vs. Electric vehicles it is important to understand how a small difference in energy usage impacts it. In an ICE vehicle you have a massive gas tank with an insane amount of energy. Driving...

Model 3 SR+ showing 166 miles at 80% charge.. is that right?

It's a 2019 (Sept build date) M3P with the PUP package (so 20" boat anchor wheels and performance tires). So 299 rated new.
  18. C

Model 3 SR+ showing 166 miles at 80% charge.. is that right?

Per the article I posted, 100% is not truly 100% unless it has sat on the charger for an extended period. However, if you get in your car at say 70% after it has been sitting, I think that gives you a more realistic estimate. I did this today. Car was at 68% SOC and said 197 miles in range. Take...

Model 3 SR+ showing 166 miles at 80% charge.. is that right?

Ok. Since nobody seems to be listening to the fact that charging to 100% and seeing what the projected range says IS MEANINGLESS I've looked up the more detailed explanation that I was referring to. Read this. Try it. Then, after giving your system a chance to properly calibrate and give you a...

Model 3 SR+ showing 166 miles at 80% charge.. is that right?

I don't recall - is that number range strictly based on rated consumption, or is it variable based on driving?
  21. C

Model 3 SR+ showing 166 miles at 80% charge.. is that right?

Wow. Skimmed through all 3 pages and nobody seems to have caught on to the fact that the range is NOT necessarily indicative of the battery's degradation or current capacity. There is an exhaustive explanation of this already online that explains the mechanics of the load balancing between the...

    Energy question

Sorry, I don't know anything about the energy options in the UK, but driving 150 miles per week I'd say you can expect to use about 40-60kW. I average about 340watts per mile or 0.34kW per mile. Many people average less, and the Model 3 is rated for 250 if you drive very conservatively. Hope...

Anybody come from a sports car to Tesla?

Lol, well not the direction I expected this thread to take but so be it. Yeah the Range Rover is mine as well, we're married after all. It isn't the car I'd choose for myself (clearly, since I'm driving a Tesla) but it's the car my wife wanted - so that's the car we purchased. She didn't have an...

    Tight Garage Summon

Fast forward a year or so, and I stopped using summon completely. It is a party trick and totally useless in the real world. Smart summon is even worse, the few times recently when I wanted to use it there was just an error in the app saying visibility degraded. Waste of time, waste of money -...

Anybody come from a sports car to Tesla?

You missed the part where I said "my wife's" Range Rover. Not my pick, and we bought it before I got the Tesla. Unfortunately (for me) she wants a giant car and considers the X to be too small and minivan-ish. However I stand by the statement of eventually wanting to get a Ferrari or another...

Anybody come from a sports car to Tesla?

I sold my 911 C4S to get my Model 3 Performance. Do I regret it? Not for one single second. Do I miss my Porsche? Absolutely. There is no comparison in terms of road feel feedback, cornering, sound, shifting, etc. The Porsche is just an incredible car and a BLAST to drive on a track. BUT The...

    Fuel/Maintenance Savings vs. reasonable expectations

You're spending the equivalent of gas savings on tires? LOL. What tires are you buying and why are they wearing out so fast? My pilot sport 4s tires are at 40k miles and just now needing to be replaced. I haven't priced them, but I can assure you that the gas savings over 40k miles is going to...

Neighbor's tree branch fell on trunk - how to proceed?

I'd start by calling YOUR home owners insurance company and ask them about it. I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that if a branch extends above your property it becomes your responsibility. You're free to cut it back, but also its your problem if it falls and causes damage. I'd...

How important are regen settings in snow and ice ?

Just experienced a very scary, unable to stop at low speeds on a hill, situation in the M3P. Admittedly driving on summer tires in snow but have never had an issue in the past until the other day. The car drove just fine, not issue climbing a very steep hill with untreated roads like a tank with...

Any mods to make the M3P faster?

There's been speculation (there's an article somewhere with tests I believe) that the P software is designed to hit a specific 0-60 and there is variation in power delivery available based on load. I think the test involved doing it on a slight incline vs. a flat road and they got the same 0-60...

$3500 price difference for Model 3 Long Range AWD vs Performance. Which one should I go with?

Not sure if anyone has brought this up - but there will be a difference in resale value as well. There are fewer performance models and the buyers will be willing to pay more to get one. So, the delta may be less than you think - in fact, it may be cheaper to get the P in terms of overall...

Model 3 resell values have plummeted.

Someone talk me out of a Tesla sourced Used/Preowned M3

I couldn't be happier with my CPO Tesla. I called the service center it was located at (Tampa) and they explained that all of their CPO cars get reconditioned prior to sale. Not sure if this is true for every service center, but it definitely was true for mine. It looked like a brand new car...

Any Hardcore Car Enthusiast Out Here? I Have Questions About Going to Model 3

This is something I've been interested in but haven't done. Have you done it yourself? I've ballparked that a charge would be good for a solid 20 minute session or so, but probably not 2. I feel like an RV plug would maybe work but you'd probably be starting each session with less and less...

Anyone tried the "Active Exhaust" systems?

Will do! We're in the process of moving so my task list for the foreseeable future includes reinstalling wall connector, and everything else that goes along with a house. BUT it is definitely on my radar now. I did find this guy's video review and it further convinced me it would be a lot of...

Anyone tried the "Active Exhaust" systems?

FYI the Tesla boom box is a relatively small speaker with no resonating chamber - you're not going to get throaty exhaust notes that resonate through the vehicle. It is a non-starter if you're looking for something that has any punch.
  38. C

Anyone tried the "Active Exhaust" systems?

This really rings true. Coming from the Porsche community it is really odd to me to see so many non-enthusiasts with such strong opinions about what other people should and shouldn't do with their cars. I'm probably going to order one just to spite them - and because I really do miss hearing an...

"Proactive" 12v battery replacement - good idea or overkill?

Yes. So to close the loop on my ordeal. Prepping the house for sale and showings so my car was in the driveway. Went to pull it in that night, and it died completely once I got inside. Used my battery charger to power the tow hook leads, opened the frunk, found the battery had 4.5v. Put it on...

"Proactive" 12v battery replacement - good idea or overkill?

Well I took the battery into the service center and bought a new one. Got home, and I can't get the frunk open. I had to close it due to heavy rain today. I've tried my charger on the 10 and 50amp settings, as well as jumper cables from the new battery. No reaction, nothing. So this is turning...

"Proactive" 12v battery replacement - good idea or overkill?

You're correct about getting the hood open - that was simple enough. However even with the charger connected to the 12v battery the doors would not open. I even tried bumping it up to the 50amp 'start' setting thinking maybe it was a current issue. No dice. Even after being on the charger all...

"Proactive" 12v battery replacement - good idea or overkill?

Just had this happen to me last night. 2019 P3D with like 37k miles. Car was in the driveway as we got things prepared for showings (the house hit the market the next day). Got in my car to pull it back in the garage and everything died. Had to use the emergency door lever to get out. Pushed the...

    Performance cold weather range

You'll have 0 issues with 80 mile round trip in any weather - even on highway driving at 80-90mph the entire way (which sucks battery like crazy) you will be fine. Even pre-heating your car before you get to it, using heated seats, etc. 80 miles is nothing. I'd be hesitant to say the same about...

    Auto Pilot Hands Free

Yeah, to be totally honest I prefer the hand on the wheel vs. the camera. With hand on wheel you can (not that you should) focus on other things, the camera is much less forgiving. I've also found the camera to be overly sensitive. For example if you're looking straight ahead at the road, but...

    Auto Pilot Hands Free

I haven't paid much attention to the GM version, but the last I saw it only worked on specific highways that are mapped? Either way, the answer to your question is - yes. I'm using FSD beta and the cabin camera is tracking driver attention. I think it is very likely that eventually Tesla will...

    Strollers

We actually took our stroller to the service center prior to purchasing the M3 so see how it fits. We have an Uppababy Vista - and it takes up about half the rear trunk. There's a way to remove the seat itself to get it in there in a more compact way, but typically we don't take it anywhere. For...

Did you opt-in? I think there's a button somewhere in the autopilot menu.

Is this a coolant leak (green fluid)?

Yeah I think it is too much of a coincidence to be unrelated (the car wash vs. the green fluid). My experience with coolant leaks has been that they happen when the car is warmed up and operating, and are the worst immediately after shutting off when everything becomes heat soaked and pressure...
