The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

I would run the 275 because the 285 is even taller at 26.9in.

Did anyone do any actual acceleration testing?

Fingers crossed the "only" 2.9 sec time is because they pushed the gearing to hold torque longer.

I'll take more power 40-80 before the fall off PLS. My butt feels the fall off over 40 now and on my back roads it just feels weak since corner exit is above the falloff point. I agree that speed to 100+ isnt all that necessary, but up to 80 should be fully reasonable.

I think 90% of that is pretty optimistic thinking 😅 I have a suspicion Elon is letting stock price drop holding back big news to get more shares for his bonus. Since he stated needing X percent of TSLA before he'd allow AI to get involved. But thats just me pontificating. Im guessing 2.7s...

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

Its been a couple years since I measured and I seem to recall getting 0.68 front but MPP or UP said 0.72 so I averaged it. Def not 0.6 up front though. I should have done a finer resolution measuring last time I had it apart but I didnt... 😅

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

From what I recall, they didn't subtract unsprung weight from mass part of the equation. But MR is in the 0.70-0.71 range up front. I measured the rear much more accurately though, 0.605 was the average over 6in.

Yep, this is what I would expect.

The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

If it is, its not by much. All the kits for TM3s are super soft and even with my current spring rates (800/1200) theres quite a bit of roll. Thats only 2.1hz/2.2hz. And tires alone need 1.5-2deg on their own. My car also has more camber gain compared to stock upright TM3s. I havent done...

The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

Some tires tolerate pinching better than others and usually it comes down to sidewall stiffness. Back in the day the A6 worked pinched but the A7 not as much. Similar thing with the Yokohama vs B-stone now. I went against my better judgement and put a 275 on my 9" wheel and its been pretty...

Or wider is better. Its the 2nd order effect physics ignores cause it makes the math easier and is appropriate for most things.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Nurburgring numbers are 100% irrelevant to me. So much of lap time there is top end accel and top speed. And then with EVs they have to ship with eco tires for published range. Also, I keep seeing people talk about how quick others have gotten older M3P in 0-60 then comparing to potentially...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

A 991.2 turbo + are so damn quick out of the box. My Evo makes similar peak power as the TM3 but 1100lbs lighter (ballasted). Launching its easier in TM3 buy orders of magnitude, but past about 10ft cause of traction the Evo just pulls past it. And a 991.2 turbo is faster. But thats 150k+ and...

I have the lucky distinction of building one of the XA benchmarks. So I can say with pretty strong certainty that at least the current M3P has a great chance of being competitive but not being an over dog.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

CAM-C has a front engine RWD requirement. So its not necessarily because its an EV, its just the wrong platform. I already got confirmation directly from the board that EVs are intended to play in XA so we should be good for things past EVX. Hopefully the publish the clarification in this months...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

They're SSB prototypes, only ones in existence right now. I have an idea of how 18s could fit, but will require a special post and both arms. 19s and 305s are the easy answer here. I think the power bump (if real) coupled all the right parts could make the TM3 the easiest and most reliable way...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Anyone thinking they'll want billet uprights, unfortunately 19s are necessary. The ball joint direction puts the nuts too low for an 18" wheel to clear. But yeah, stagger size might just be about putting extra power down for a more aggressive 0-60.

I cant imagine wasting processing power on something like that vs just setting a static map based on whatever parameters the designers chose. Especially with a damper, feedback loop would need to be something related to position which would be more sensors driving price. If anything, it would...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

2.9s as a base (didnt original M3P come as 3.5?) would be OK to me if they improved 60-120 more. What I would rather see, a real rear LSD.
  28. Dallas J

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Really depends on if the front uprights do well (sales-wise) and what they do with the new M3P. If its more of the same, I'll probably move on. If its mid 2s 0-60 and ~125mph trap then that becomes a lot more appealing. My M3P feeling slow compared to my Evo but 125mph trap would help with that.

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

Power isn't the issue of the M3P in AutoX terms. Without some help, its almost an issue of mo-power-mo-problems. IMO, a big issue/limitation is the power cut with steering angle Tesla has in the programming to tolerate the lack of rear LSD. I kind of want to find a way to intercept the...

The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

The Z06 is 66.3f and 66.1r with 275/345. Lotus Elise is 2" wider rear track width. S550 mustang is 2.5" wider rear track width. 991.2 911turbo is 0.5" wider rear track width and 70mm in tire split. We're just saying, total width split isn't all that important.
  33. Dallas J

The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

The 991.2 GT3 is 30mm wider in the rear. Track width isnt a limitation for stagger.
  34. Dallas J

Track Mode Handling Balance 0% Front 100% Rear - Does it reduce straight line acceleration or available power?

To my feel, the change is more like it retards the application rate of power to the other axle. But you still get to the same power eventually. And steering angle definitely has an effect on things as well. So its kind of unpredictable. But you can use it as a tool to adjust corner exit...

The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

I tried to get maximum clearance on the uprights for tires but ran into a major issue with the upper control arm. At full compression the upper control arm angles far more than I expected limiting just how much I could do there. These pictures are +1 to +1.5 deg of camber from OEM (depending on...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

If the M3P gets heavier then it becomes a 1 trick pony like the rest of the EVs in this performance category. If all you care about is daily driving and acceleration its fine, but if you actually like that the M3P handles well also then heavier is absolutely the wrong direction.

I'm trying to get 315s to fit all around so have a teaser of my new upright (Scroll right to see clearance difference) Hoping to finish the small parts needed this week to install one side and then I'll get picture of how clearance changes with the tires I have on hand.

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

Yeah, that's the difference of tire + concrete. Its just an adjustment tool really. At the Packwood Pro in Dans car I ran 50/50 also cause it wasn't having any issues with exit oversteer. But on our local small lot or if it gets wet Ive been pushing it forward. Literally just as a means to bias...

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

Ive seen this a bunch where manufacturers will take really wild guesses on motion ratios and pick springs for published weights before production cars even exist. For example, when the Evo came to america, they could have gotten numbers from the Evo7 which is the same chassis (CT9A) but they...
  41. Dallas J

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

Those are pretty close to the motion ratios I've been able to find as well. I'm working on my tesla uprights now and will take apart the car to measure directly soon. Your numbers above, you have to subtract unsprung weight from corner weight. NF only cares about the sprung mass. So assume...

Being up front is pretty nice. I got to park the RV one year in chiefs row and its great being able to jump around. Last year I was all the way in the back in the "big rig" rows past the practice course. Lots of room to but literally a mile from the action. Electric scooter or golf cart is...

FWIW, run your AC and stay cool. The slight change in batt charge will have orders of magnitude less effect compared to just being calm and in the right state of mind.
  44. Dallas J

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

In EVX or any other classes, if it doesn't say you can then you cant. In CAM/XA rules things open up with much more generic statements like drivetrain is unrestricted. As Im reading through the EVX and ST rules, neither specify that Toe arms can be changed but ST does have this rule This...

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

Turns out more throttle is faster 😅 Was pretty how well balanced through transitions the tesla is. My only complaint is not getting any power when the wheel is turned too much. Really cuts into ability to dig on tight bits.

This happened to some very good friends and has become a very personal incident. Especially considering the personal involvement in it. So you'll find we're very sensitive right now and going through massive grief. Please be patient.

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

There are some smaller clubs where you can get 10-15 runs in. And theres also the Medford cart track where they do the enduro events. Those I could certainly drain the battery enough I'd think about charging. But for sure a normal 5 run event, I probably wouldn't bother too much with it.

Autocross- SCCA EV-X Class vs. SS

We would definitely have to test the gen ahead of time and possibly do some research, but we needed the gen regardless so if it does work its a bonus. I'll probably do some running of the tesla this year while testing the billet uprights, so this was my plan for charging over night. We always...
