    Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter

I wish my experience would support the assertion that standards are all that is required for good interoperability. When different vendors all develop their own software to a common set of standards.... seldom do those independent software implementations interoperate with each other. Back in...

Wishing Out Loud: A mini Tesla DC charger

Cool link, and does give representation as to size. Probably with Tesla level quantities cost could be significantly reduced, but still probably $1K or more. But then the relay on my wall in the garage was about that when I purchased it 8 years ago. I would also think size could be reduced...

Wishing Out Loud: A mini Tesla DC charger

The electronics are not that challenging nor that heavy. It is basically one good sized PCB in the Teslas that does the work. Inside the car or in the mobile charger... the job is the same. Probably about 25 to 50% larger than the existing mobile charger.

Wishing Out Loud: A mini Tesla DC charger

So... my thought is that in the future AC charging (in cars) will be discontinued and the cars will be DC charging only. Why put the AC charger in the vehicle... put the the AC to DC converter in the wall unit. And as such, lower KW DC chargers will become more prevalent. 10, 15, 20KW will...

When will all the US freeway gas station / truck stop / convenience stores deploy EV chargers?

Another way to think about the problem is by dividing EV car owners into who has at home charging capabilities, and those who do not. For the most part those who have at home charging capabilities have their needs met for commuting and normal car usage. Where they will need fast charging is...

    Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter

Not sure what car you have, but if the Model 3/Y likely you will not be able to exceed 50KW with ANY adapter (only >50KW with supercharger) See earlier comments from Randy, the car limits to 126A. Mike

When will all the US freeway gas station / truck stop / convenience stores deploy EV chargers?

Yes, it is that last category that was my focus. Good delineation of categories. Mike

When will all the US freeway gas station / truck stop / convenience stores deploy EV chargers?

And it circles back around to the point... even at 2 million gallons a year, that works out to 0.03 $60,000 a YEAR... Not nearly enough to support a brick and mortar location. Your Cosco example... $450,000 year, As I said originally, Selling gasoline is along the lines of having bathrooms...

    Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter

Interesting theory, and quite possible Mike

    Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter

Well... possibly, I discounted that for two reasons: 1) It is allowed with model S/X with the same adapter. 2) Once the actual charging is started (after negotiations on what voltage/current/etc are decided upon)... it is actually pretty simple stuff outside the car. The car just see a high DC...

When will all the US freeway gas station / truck stop / convenience stores deploy EV chargers?

I think most of us consider it a safe bet that significantly higher percentage of vehicles on the roads will be EV every year moving forward. The current travel stations stores sell gas for almost the same profit as they score off of the bathrooms. But it brings people into the store. EV...

    Dc combo for USA port

Yeah, it is disappointing. Model S/X owners apparently have no such limitation. Also at least in my area, the most common configuration for non tesla charging stations is 1 Chadmo + X CCS. The odds of the Chadmo charging station being out of order, or in use... is much higher than CCS...

    Dc combo for USA port

My understanding was that the Korean and North American cars were to the same specification. Thus subject to the same hardware requirements for an adapter. If a $170 adapter would work on post 2019 Tesla's in Korea, they should also work on post 2019 North American cars, unless Tesla does...

    Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter

Ahh, that is sort of what I was referring to with the handshake vender ID.... so the Car knows it is talking to a supercharger. So ANY aftermarket DC charger is going to face the same 50KW limitation unless they convince the car they are a super charger, or force higher current levels than the...

    Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter

So presumably a Tesla supercharger ignores the 126A requested and supplies (or forces) something higher? Have you been able to examine the handshake with Tesla supercharge to see how it differs and can charge at greater than 100kw with a M3? Thanks again, Mike

    Dc combo for USA port

I was going by the price quoted here: Tesla launches $190 CCS adapter for new Model S and Model X, offers retrofits for older vehicles - Electrek as a price having been confirmed by Tesla. However, of course, prices sometimes change or confirmations are sometimes incorrect.

    Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter

Thanks for your presence here Randy. In Bullet 2, you are saying that Model 3's and presumably Model Y's are limited by the CAR when charging off of an adapter (rather than a Tesla Super Charger) to 50KW? How does the car know what is plugged into it's Tesla port? Some sort of vender ID...

    Dc combo for USA port

Glad to see this appears to be successful for the most part and the manufacturer responsive. Went to go consider purchase and notice that the price had gone up from the early-adopter price. I thought that was suppose to happen in Mid January? Oh well. At the current price though I think I'll...
