Passenger Mirror Motor/Mount for Model X

I had the same problem. The driver-side mirror actuator in my 2012 Model S stopped working reliably. I’d reverse the car and the mirror would auto-adjust to the reversing position so I could see the ground behind the car to back up safely, and then when I started driving forward I’d notice that...

    Model S (2012-2020) Snow Chains

It appears that at some point Tesla changed the wheel nuts (and must have replaced mine with the new style during some routine service) but even today Tesla is still selling the König K-Summit K45 chains that require the old-style wheel nuts. If Tesla is still selling these snow chains, Tesla...

    Model S (2012-2020) Snow Chains

Thanks for that information. Here is my amateur artist’s attempt to depict the problem I have with the König K-Summit K45 chains (the ones currently being sold by Tesla). The bolt protruding from the middle of the wheel nut prevents the socket from reaching the nut, so it can’t clamp on to it.

    Model S (2012-2020) Snow Chains

The length of the bolt protruding from the middle of the wheel nut is longer than the cavity inside the socket on the König K-Summit K45 chains. To try to illustrate what I’m talking about in round numbers, if you put a half-inch cup over a one-inch stick, there’s no way to make the bottom of...

    Model S (2012-2020) Snow Chains

Yes, I have had the car since new, bought in 2012. As others have pointed out, it is definitely not AWD (that was not available in 2012) which makes having working snow chains for ski trips to Tahoe all the more important.

    Model S (2012-2020) Snow Chains

I purchased Snow Chains for my Model S (2012-2020) directly from Tesla’s web site, for $420 plus tax. They arrived promptly and appear sturdy and well made, but I am having a hard time installing them. The instructions seem to be very clear in emphasizing the importance of securely attaching the...

    Reverse guidance lines assist

After the last software update, my reversing guidance lines also stopped working. I thought it might be a bug because my old Model S model doesn’t get much testing these days. Or perhaps a hardware failure of the steering wheel sensor. But, thanks to teslamotorsclub I found this thread, did a...

    Open Vehicle Monitoring System

A late followup to a post from long ago: I got the script working on my machine by installing the Perl JSON module. For the benefit of others, to do this I ran “sudo cpan install JSON” and chose the “local::lib” method: After cranking away for a few minutes, it completed with a reassuring...

Silicon Valley Clean Energy CCA (Santa Clara County)

I think the key question here, which people have speculated about, but I haven’t seen in any official document, is whether PG&E will continue to give a credit for the distribution charges in periods where your solar panels generate a net surplus. It’s possible that PG&E could allow the solar...

    High power wall charger

The HPC (high power connector) is rated for up to 70A continuous, but your house wiring might not be. The HPC has internal settings to tell the car how much it can safely draw. You can rely on remembering to manually set your car to a safe current, but’s safer to have the HPC tell it the safe...

Tesla Model S Bluetooth audio won’t stay paused

I noticed something new today. I stopped the car, paused the podcast, and got out. I left the phone inside because I was only stopping for a minute to mail some letters. I opened the passenger side door to pick up the letters off the passenger seat, and the podcast started playing. I had...

Tesla Model S Bluetooth audio won’t stay paused

For the last couple of months, Bluetooth audio in my Tesla Model S won’t stay paused. I don’t know if it’s caused by the iOS 10 update, or a Tesla firmware update, or a combination of both. I currently have iOS 10.1.1 (14B150) and Tesla firmware 8.0 (2.44.130). I like to listen to podcasts...

    Open Vehicle Monitoring System

I used +1xxxyyyzzzz But I only got it to work once. And “STAT? <password>” with my module password didn’t work (the number I was testing with to receive the responses is not the “registered” number). The EDGE/GPRS connection is working with the app, so I gave up wasting money on trying more...

    Open Vehicle Monitoring System

With the Hologram.io service, EDGE/GPRS data is relatively cheap ($0.60 per megabyte), and SMS data is relatively expensive (approx $1200 per megabyte). SMS data is about 2000x more expensive than Internet data — a single 150-byte SMS message costs about the same as 300 kilobytes of Internet...

    Open Vehicle Monitoring System

Well, it’s working now, so I should be okay from now on. I did a little more investigation and discovered a few things: 1. When entering the “from number” on the Hologram Dashboard you must enter it without spaces. I entered my number as “+1 408 xxx yyyy” and it didn’t work. It didn’t give any...

    Open Vehicle Monitoring System

Thanks for the suggestion, but as I said, I was reporting success. My OVMS is now working with the Hologram SIM. According to the Hologram Dashboard the SIM Status says “active on T-Mobile USA, Inc. CO”, so I am in fact on T-Mobile, just at approximately $20/yr instead of $120/yr.

    Open Vehicle Monitoring System

Reporting success… I ordered a Hologram SIM, which I installed yesterday. The OVMS was getting no signal (using H2O on the AT&T network) so I didn’t even bother trying to do the SMS “GPRS hologram” command via H2O/AT&T. I installed the new Hologram SIM and attempted to send the SMS “GPRS...

OVMS - 2G being turned off in US by AT & T

My OVMS has largely stopped working for the last few days. Once in a while it seems to get a signal, but it’s become mostly nonfunctional. I’m using H2O on the ATT network, in and around Cupertino, and it appears that ATT may be starting to shut down 2G GPRS service in this area. Perhaps...

Bedding-in procedure? My new rotors and AX6 pads are now installed on my Roadster. I have a question for the more experienced performance drivers on the forum. The instructions for the Carbotech AX6 pads include a fairly strict bedding-in procedure: This is all new to me. I’ve never before...

    OVMS Installation

After almost three months of light usage, my H20 SIM has now used just $2 of the initial $10 credit. The 90 days was likely to expire long before the $10 initial credit was used up. I added another $10, and was pleasantly surprised that it added another 90 days to the previous expiration date...

Open Vehicle Monitor System (OVMS) reporting stale GPS location

I got the car back. They had checked the GPS system and reported that they found nothing wrong. Perhaps in the process they did unknowingly reseat a loose antenna connection, or something like that. When I drove it the touchscreen did correctly report heading and elevation, and the OVMS app is...

Open Vehicle Monitor System (OVMS) reporting stale GPS location

For unrelated reasons my Roadster is at the Sunnyvale service center right now. I asked them to check if the Roadster GPS antenna in the front wheel arch is properly connected, and this is what they told me: Is the Sunnyvale Tesla service center giving me correct information?

Open Vehicle Monitor System (OVMS) reporting stale GPS location

When I installed the OVMS (firmware 2.6.5) in my Roadster (1.5) a couple of months ago, all seemed to be working fine. It reported the correct battery level. It reported the correct location — parked in my garage. But, since then, I’ve noticed that the location never changes. It always says...

    OVMS Installation

I’m late to this game, but I’ve finally ordered an OVMS for my Roadster. I more than happy to pay $100 to the enterprising individuals who worked hard to create the OVMS; but it pains me to pay $10/month ($120/year) for the very modest data usage OVMS requires. AT&T’s offering at 10¢/min...

Roadster annual service price increased to $720

I agree. When rechargeable batteries used to self-discharge in 4-6 weeks they were inconvenient for things like TV remote controls. Now that we have low-self-discharge rechargeables like Sanyo Eneloop, they’re much more practical for low-drain devices where you don’t want to have to pointlessly...

    Charging clicking

I had a similar problem a year ago. Nudging the plug even slightly would cause the car to make clicking sounds and stop charging. Tesla replaced the UMC (but not the charge port, as far as I know) and I've not had a problem since.

Roadster annual service price increased to $720

I’m uncomfortable throwing away batteries just because they might be running low. The same applies to other things like the batteries in the TV remote control. I don’t like the idea that when the TV remote control doesn’t seem to be working reliably I just reflexively replace the batteries...

Reversing camera turns off when menu is displayed

I think I’ve worked out why I repeatedly suffer this problem of the reversing camera turning off. Why does accelerating fast use more energy than accelerating slowly?

No it doesn't have to require more energy. Imagine an old-fashioned mouse trap. When you prime the trap, it take a certain amount of energy to bend the spring into the loaded position. The spring under tension is storing energy. If the spring is allowed to fire suddenly, or gently released, the...

Has anyone received a replacement 14-50 in the mail?

I received my replacement NEMA 14-50 adapter today (bottom left). What about my other three plug adapters? Or was the overheating problem something specific to the just the NEMA 14-50?

    Tesla Service Plan Change

You’re right. I bought a NEMA 6-50 adapter last September, but they no longer appear on the Tesla web site. The NEMA 14-50 is the only 50A (40A continuous) adapter they still sell.

Car keeps telling me to “Add a Wi-Fi Connection”

Every time I get in my Model S in the morning, it displays a message telling me to “Add a Wi-Fi Connection”, despite the fact that it already has a perfectly good Wi-Fi Connection showing four bars of signal strength. No matter how many times I press the “Connect to Wi-Fi” button, delete and...

Key Not Inside; Key Battery Needs Replacing

Tesla always charged me $13 for this — two CR1616 cells at $6.50 each. (For context, on Amazon you can get a five-pack of CR1616’s from a reputable manufacturer like Maxell for about $3.) The irony is that I have one Roadster key on my keyring, which I use, and another Roadster key by itself...

That depends on how you look at it. Like many other people, I gave Tesla a down payment of $30,000, and then waited for two years for them to make my Roadster. If Tesla went out of business I would have lost it all and got nothing. If Tesla succeeded, then for my two-year unsecured high-risk...
