Dual Electric Motors - does it reduce range? Possibility of FWD only?

The real answer is... It depends :) An intelligent torque/power distribution strategy can improve efficiency. A "dumb" system will consume more energy. Here's an example simulation showcasing the power consumption at constant speed with varying front/rear distribution:

Tesla Model S wiring diagram (for alarm and range extender)

This won't work with bypassing the battery-pack. The ICE won't be able to supply the power when the inverter demands is. I.e. the ramping-up and ramping-down of the range-ex is too slow for the electric powertrain. You need some kind of buffer in between.

    RIP Vin #783

Make (weld) a jig across the full length of the chassis, fix it to the chassis at structural points, replace battery. The chassis should be repairable if it is still in-line, bit it will be quite some work. I flipped over three times in my Opel Speedster (Lotus chassis), repaired the chassis...

Does the Model S battery use active balancing?

No - a BMS treats a string of any number of paralleled cells as one cell. The Roadster has 99 cells in series which means that the BMS monitors 99 individual voltages, no matter how many cells are in parallel.

    Bad experience with flood waters

Don't worry, the electronics won't be damaged. Like most electric cars, the Tesla S has (very likely) an isolation monitoring device which checks the resistance between the HV-system and chassis/LV-system. The resistance has dropped due to moisture in the system so the vehicle's control unit...

Tesla competition: The problem of cannibalism

I don't agree with you. Look at Fiat - they're loosing 10k on each electric 500 they sell. Everyone in the industry knows that BMW will loose billions with the i sub-brand --> it is just a huge marketing bubble. Audi canceled most of their EV projects. The list goes on... Tesla manages to make...

    Fisker Karma

Yeah, kind of... We're actually self-sustaining by offering engineering, components and prototyping for the industry. But investors are always welcome. :) As you can imagine probably - we don't share much publicly. PM sent. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

    Fisker Karma

Image how frustrating it is for me to learn how much support from the government some companies received while we had absolutely zero support. I had to develop most of the car and build the company with the budget some companies had for designing their web-site. Not to mention that we had to...

Model S development costs so far?

Thanks :) Billion? Not even one percent... Trust me, it where very hard 5 years for me.

Model S development costs so far?

Hmm... I'll rather not say which budget I had to build a company and car from scratch. :)
  11. C

How much extra would you pay for AWD

Everyone tries to keep the wires between the inverter and motor as short and shielded as possible. So the inverter will always be very close (if not in the same housing) to the motor.

    Will Tesla last?

Here in Croatia a very basic BMW 520i with no extra options costs 50.800 € ($65.000) and people still buy a lot of them. The average monthly net salary is less than $1.000. I don't think that a $7.500 price increase would have a big impact on the Model S sales. In Europe people will be willing...

Model S vs Roadster on the Track

This is not great news, but look at it from the other side: I had a BMW M6 and it overheated too after a few laps of track driving. An "Oil temperature too high, please slow down" message would pop-up on the screen.

Of course, I thought I don't have to mention that :) But I look at RA more as a supercar company than an EV company. For now anyways...

Ireland: Heading towards an EV flop?

Remember the Internet bubble? Well, now the EV bubble is about to blow... Too many have done it wrong - created artificial demand with tons of government money. Now look at all those companies and how many of them have already bankrupted (car manufacturers, suppliers...). In my opinion, Tesla...

The records are broken under FIA governance and rules, which is a completely different animal compared to NEDRA. The previous records were set by Peugeot with the EX-1 - 14,4 on the 1/4 mile:

Ferrari is using Getrag transmissions like everyone else. No in-house development.
  20. C

    Rimac Automobili Concept_One

We did and we still do, but also considering other options. As you know, we only purchase cells and make the packs, thermal and battery management in-house so we're constantly improving our battery-pack design. Yep, this was the biggest mistake while designing the Concept_One. We simply didn't...

Will other brand vehicles be able to use the Supercharger?

I have tried to reach out to Tesla regarding the supercharger some time ago. We at Rimac Automobili would rather use this than some other protocols but no luck yet (no response)... I know they are busy so I fully understand (we have a hard time keeping up with the incoming requests too)...

Model S/X dual connectors for dual chargers?

That is true if only one charger is always connected to one port. If you want to make it possible that both chargers share the current from one port (as the Model S is doing now [I believe] when using a high-current source), and that each charger can run on its own port when both are...

    Paris motorshow 2012

Really? I spoke with a guy from the Tesla office in London a few days ago and I believe he said that they will be in Paris.

Model S/X dual connectors for dual chargers?

Something like this...? You can do it, but it is not so easy to do as it seems - it requires a lot of additional hardware and some software which increases cost, complexity and weight.

    Rimac Automobili Concept_One

A lot. It shares very few parts with the concept car. The wheelbase is longer, the chassis and suspension is different, the powertrain is new, the battery is different... Everything is on a further evolution-stage (improved). It should be way better than the concept car in every way. At this...

Active air suspension connected to Home Link?

Maybe that's not such a good idea. An air-suspension is very stiff on the highest setting. Most cars lower the suspension to normal height as soon as you hit 50 km/h or so.

    Rimac Automobili Concept_One

Thanks! Actually, we'll be in Barcelona 14th-16th of September with the Concept_One for a private event. If you want, you can come and see the car. I can give you a test-ride in it if that will be possible schedule and road-wise. Please contact Monika (monika(at)rimac-automobili.com) to...

    break-in period?

It is good for the batteries if you run a few cycles (10 is good enough) with low discharge rates (no hard acceleration). The motor and controller don't need any break-in.
  30. C

    Rimac Automobili Concept_One

Yes, but we don't consider the Roadster as competition. We consider Pagani, Bugatti and Koenigsegg as our competitors. We're also working on the improvement of the acceleration and it might be improved significantly with a major development we're working on currently but I can't go too much...

That's a real photo I took in LeMans. The photo is straight out of the camera, no after-effects (photoshop). More photos from that event here and here. We will do our best to make the car as close to perfect as possible. Who knows, maybe even Jeremy will like it.

    Fisker Fires

We must have a fire extinguisher in every car here, and they have to be checked and certified every year. AFAIK, most of the High-Voltage stuff is in the rear. The motor controllers are behind the rear seats. Still, the generator inverter is in the engine compartment.

Flux Capacitor: Europe's fastest street legal EV

This is a 600 hp street legal EV in Croatia so this guy has to beat that. 280 km/h top speed and 11,3 sec. on the 1/4 mile. It is well know that you can legalize anything in the UK as long as it has brake-lights and blinkers. We have worked very hard for two years to homologate this car...

    The high-pitched whine during acceleration...

We had a very similar noise coming from a high-current contractor under hard acceleration. It was a one-time problem with a contactor probably messed-up during production. If this is noticeable in only one car, it could be the same issue. However, the vibrating connector can also be the...

    Model S regen

From your explanation - this is the motor controller changing the switching frequency. The controller is more efficient at lower frequencies but also louder. It probably works on a higher switching frequency during during "normal driving" (within the continuous rated motor-controller...

    Model S regen

The lever-activated regen is great. I love to drive the e-M3, especially because of this feature. It is not only great for city and open-road driving, but it gives completely new possibilities for drift-maniacs like myself. However, the problem is that this solution can't be homologated (at...

Thanks guys! Yes, they told us that many big OEMs where refused this year so I'm quite happy and thankful that they allowed us to be there. It's an unbelievable experience. (never seen that kind of concentrated fanciness in my life  ) Btw. Many of those old-timers are 10.000.000 -...

Is plugging in at a public place stealing?

We don't have a single public charging station (or plug) for EVs in my country. Sometimes my range is not enough for all daily needs so I plug it in a public garage. The garage is very expensive since it's located in the city center so I don't consider the topping-up as stealing. I can charge a...

    Next gen Roadster

Very unlikely if they stick to the small size Li-Ion cells. They have great energy density but their power density is not suited for a supercar.

Likelihood of a CHAdeMO adapter for the Model S

I would say it is impossible as an aftermarket solution without the OEM's (Tesla Motors) support. You would have to hack deeply in the vehicle's system's to get the car communicate with the charger.
  46. C

Likelihood of a CHAdeMO adapter for the Model S

It's not just a connector... The car's ECUs and BMS has to communicate with the charger. The on-board charger doesn't charge the car if you plug it in to a CHADEMO station, the station does the whole job, so the BMS must communicate with it. An simple adapter won't do the job.

Silicon Valley Auto Show without Tesla?

Tesla also didn't show up at the biggest car show last year (2011) - the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA - Internationale Automobil Ausstellung) which was quite a surprise for me. Maybe they don't want to show the same stuff on two exhibitions so they just want to show up when there is some news...

    Rimac Automobili Concept_One

Hi Domenick, You're right, we're not planing to produce affordable EVs in the near future. The reason is obvious - the massive investment needed for a large scale production and the competition from the big car companies. There is simply no chance to keep up with the big OEMs. Even Tesla is...
