    Solar panel storm damage repair?

Just got through a bad storm, next town over a tornado landed and we still got so bad the house shook... we have debris flying all over. Patio table from 2 house down if I'm my backyard. I think one of the panel may have been cracked... Need a zoom lens for a better look but it's raining...

Open circuit string voltage of 17 volts...is this normal?

Sounds like either bad panel or bad intermittent MCI. I had the intermittent MCI and took a while for. Roof crew to come out and replace 3 of the 4 MCI (they didn't bring enough) on the string. Luckily that seem to have fixed it

Using 100% of the solar your panels produce [DC / AC ratio]

People also tend to forget, you GAIN production during the "shoulder" before and after clipping, usually that exceed or offset the clipping All these clipping complaint is a side effect of Tesla's flat rate pricing structure, if folks were told, yeah you need to add $3000 for a second inverter...

11.6kw Solar Roof, but only one Inverter?

FYI, a 1.2 to 1.3x DC/AC overage (not overdrive) is fairly common when you use other solar company that charge for material use (each inverter add more cost). It is usually cheaper to get to 1.2 to 1.3x DC vs AC to get more generation during the "shoulder" (morning/afternoon before/after...

How many strings should I have?

Conduits can only fit so many wire of certain size. For my install with 46 panels in 5 string (3.8+7.6) they needed 2 conduits, 1 can fit 4 thicker pv wire from 2 string, the other they had to switch in a roof junction box from 3 strings of pv into 3 strings of thnn (thinner jacket) to fit it...

    Design Question

I think to add a EV charger, you will need to upgrade the 125a service disconnect panel to a 200a. Have not done the load calculation but 90a sounds reasonable for a house and if you add another 50a.... That would be too much

    Power on but app confused

You just have to find out if it's a neurino (typical with a pw+) or the gateways plug in X or Y meter (have to open the gateway inner panel cover) Then set it up in the wizard

    Power on but app confused

If you are fairly techy AND handy, you can find out what meter and configure the gateway accordingly using installer mode

    Power wall plus 170% capacity?

Tesla charge by per watt DC, they charge thw same for a 7.6 alone or adding another 3.8. they used to charge the same when they used the solar edge 10kw inverter. We are getting only 7.6 now because Tesla in-house the inverter but dont offer a 10kw option. So in early 2021 they were installing...
  15. B

    Power wall plus 170% capacity?

Goal is to generate the most output, 1.7 is leaving a lot on the table, while 1.3 to 1.1 is minimal gain.
  16. B

    Power wall plus 170% capacity?

That's why I worked with the designer and the install crew to make sure I got the desired spilt between the 2 inverters and between the east and west roof planes to balance the inverter load minimize the clippings
  17. B

    Power wall plus 170% capacity?

1.2 to 1.3 ratio is the industry Norm. If it's all south facing 1.7 will clip like crazy. See my example above you lose a 1000kwh from clipping going from 10kw 1.3 to 7.6kw 1.7 for the same DC size. That's a month worth of generation every year
  18. B

    Power wall plus 170% capacity?

estimate from PVwatts 1) 12.92kw system with a 7.6+3.8kw inverter, south facing chicago metro, DC/AC ratio 1.1 expect about 17400kwh per year 2) 12.92kw system with a 10kw inverter, south facing chicago metro, DC/AC ratio 1.3 expect about 17400kwh per year 3) 12.92kw system with a 7.6kw...

    Power wall plus 170% capacity?

Until someone provide some proof of the PW+ inverter exceeding 7.8kw wheter to the grid or combine with charging the battery, just a bunch of BS as far as I'm personally concern. Just Tesla advisor trying to explain away why Tesla is trying to stuff a 12kw DC system at 1.7 DC/AC ratio onto a...

    Tesla inverter DC wiring

you lose slightly more over 15 degrees but shouldn't be near 20-30%. the voltage of the panels are largely the same surprisingly. its when there's large voltage mismatch that you get more lost
  21. B

    Power wall plus 170% capacity?

    1) Never take "new feature via software" as a promise, treat it as a bonus if it comes through, most likely won't 2) No, never seen it goes above 7.8kw max and those 7.8kw are a short blip 7.7kw sustain i have seen. 3) There's no physical DC wire to go from anywhere to the battery of the PW+...

    Tesla inverter DC wiring

You aren't losing much as long as shading aren't a big issue https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.solarquotes.com.au/blog/an-eastwest-spit-of-solar-panels-on-a-single-string-can-work-well/amp/

Suggested string layout for my install?

I think it work either way, pricing will update accordingly to what was added or removed about $2.01 per watt DC before rebates/credit.

Tesla installed strings in parallel on 7.6 Inverter

Kudos to you actually to be able convince Tesla to re-wire for you. Usually once installed they won't change the design.
  25. B

Suggested string layout for my install?

I picked a size, then customized with the designer. They pretty much have to do limited customization.... If the customer order 16kw xl but their roof can only fit 15.5kw would it make sense to install 12kw large and lose out on $7k in revenue or just install 1 less panel? Roof aren't cookie...

Tesla installed strings in parallel on 7.6 Inverter

Did they actually ran a new pair of wire down? I think you may see a little bit clipping during June or July, but nothing to write home about

    Powerwalls in Chicago anyone

I'm in naperville, we don't use comed. Net metering is funny, excess goes towards the city water bill
  28. B

Inverter Size and number of strings

Lately Tesla may stick you with 1 7.6kw inverter up to 12.75kw.... they upped their allowable DC/AC ratio up to 1.7. that may work with panels facing multiple direction, but clip like crazy if all south facing

Peak production, summer vs fall. August vs September vs October

Seem a lot of questions about lower (peak) production lately. Just posting my examples for reference. Mid August to today (mid October). Perfect sunny days in metro Chicago 15.64kw east (16x340) west (30x340) split with 7.6(22w/8e)+3.8(8w/8e) inverters. Installed early August. The little...

My install price increased because Tesla changed from 8.16 to 8.5kW

Pretty sure it is the 7.6 and stay the same. They used it all the way up to nearly 13kw now
  31. B

My install price increased because Tesla changed from 8.16 to 8.5kW

They charge around $2.01 per watt (before credit/rebates) so the price increase is inline with the rest of your system. 340w x $2.01 = 683 Yes you are paying more, but not more more. You are getting slightly more output at the same price per watt as the rest of your system. The panels are...

    Powerwalls in Chicago anyone

By default they want to install in basement closest to the breaker panel. My garage is opposite side of house and they want to charge me $3k for the extra wire run. I opt for a different location in the basement. Garage will be wall mounted install likely. If you install it directly in front...

11.6kw Solar Roof, but only one Inverter?

No overdrive.... They would need to increase your wiring awg size and breaker size to handle the higher output, if they never did that during install.... Where are you located? All your panels face the same direction and which direction?
  43. B

Tesla installed strings in parallel on 7.6 Inverter

The voltage drop for 8awg wire over 40-50 ft should not be an issue, the ampacity looks good too. At a lost of why such a big difference between the house and garage even after accounting for the 2 less panels. Any shading at all?

Tesla installed strings in parallel on 7.6 Inverter

The 6v is not much all things considered.... The 1 lower amp is more concerning. Do you know what awg wires they used for the underground run and how far was that run? A long run may account for the voltage drop How does the roof pitch compare between 8 panels on the main house, vs the east...

Tesla installed strings in parallel on 7.6 Inverter

You would be surprised, a east west parallel string the lost is minimal. Voltage is largely the same for east west string through most of the day except near sun rise and sun set. Big difference in voltage is when lost happens. See the link at bottom Have you try rebooting the inverter for...
