EV Community funded DC charger is operational

Woa. What happened? Is there any explanation from the business? Suddenly turning off a charger could leave people stranded.

    Queensland Electric Highway

While I respect that increased costs result in increased prices, this is an 83% price jack. I suspect that this is less about sustainability and more about a sudden budget deficit or change in operating model.
  3. P

    Queensland Electric Highway

Wow that’s a huge jump. Charging 55c/kWh for a measly 50kW seems a bit egregious. I will avoid them where I can.

    Tesla Vision vs Parking Sensors

The front bumper camera will definitely come. Given that the CT has a front bumper camera, and the S and X are reportedly getting it shortly, it will come to the 3 and Y eventually. I reckon resale values on the USS-less Teslas will take a hit when the front bumper cams reach the 3 and the Y.

Euro crash tester says carmakers must return to physical controls - Impact on Australia?

The European crash testing association (Euro NCAP) have announced that they will be deducting points if some certain controls aren't physical. These include turn signals, wipers, horn etc. The reason being is they feel that touchscreens oblige drivers to take their eyes off the road and increase...

Does using Tesla Tyre Repair kit require you to pull the nail out first?

I've used the cheapest one from Kings (the automotive 4WD store). It's can be a little difficult to do but the repair is damn near permanent.

    Tesla Vision vs Parking Sensors

I think you're confusing a bad implementation with the concept of a 360 surround view. The 360 view I used on a 3 year old BMW 5 series (part of the parking assist pro package) produced a very clean image with minimal distortion. It would easily have seen the obstacle in the example above. It...

    Tesla Vision vs Parking Sensors

Unfortunately the vision parking assist is not good for distance estimation at short distances, especially from the front where your bonnet blocks your camera view and the car has to guess it's position from memory. It tends to be inaccurate and says 'STOP' fairly early when you need that...

MY 2024 Refresh - Project Juniper?

The main benefit of LFP is a long cycle life, twice as long as NMC if not more.

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

Disagree. Tesla's maps are pretty bare bones and their overall app support is terrible. I use a cradle holding a phone that runs Waze. Its navigation runs rings around Teslas poor efforts. Tesla doesn't even have a plugshare app. I honestly think Tesla would be better off handing over to...

    Australian Model Y Waiting Room

My MY RWD is also pretty sluggish at the start. It definitely picks up over 40km/h but the throttle tune seems to limit acceleration at low speeds.
  12. P

    Australian Model 3 Waiting Room

I hope you're right but I won't be holding my breath. The auto wipers on Model Y are vision based and are terrible. If they can't fix those then I'm dubious about Tesla ever getting vision based parking working.
  13. P

    Australian Model 3 Waiting Room

Darn. I've seen so many terrible reviews of Tesla Vision that I was hoping for US sensors. It always feels like one step forward and two steps back with Tesla.
  14. P

    Australian Model 3 Waiting Room

Looks like no parking sensors? Bummer.
  15. P

    Australian Model 3 Waiting Room

Around here the fine to failing to indicate is $194 and two demerit points. With a nice car like a Model 3, you don't want to give the police or insurers any reason to hassle you.

    Model Y Accessories for Australia

I bought their mats and liners from their ebay store. Fits well, I'm very happy. The rubber floor mats are good for dirty shoes!

    ARENA/NRMA national fast charging network

Interesting. I wonder what the power rating on the generator is.

Tesla braked hard when car crossed in front

Yes I have the same issue. The car will violently brake when another vehicle crosses perpendicularly in front, even after the offending vehicle has passed. It’s a bit of a nightmare. Luckily the force of the braking application will throw your foot into the accelerator and terminate the...

    ChargeFox EV charging Network

Indeed. These chargers need to be treated like essential services, otherwise drivers will end up stranded.
  20. P

    Model Y Accessories for Australia

I'm glad it's finally available but that price is extortionate. That simple parcel shelf would be $20 of materials. It's especially egregious given that new vehicles are getting it included for free.
  21. P

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

It's not an early adopter quirk. It's a business decision. Tesla knows full well that the current navigation system is clunky and doesn't recognise third party chargers which results in users being directed to Tesla's own superchargers (and paying 70c/kWh). We can try to rationalise it how we...

    Aussie queues this long weekend

I agree. As it stands the current EV charging networks aren't fit for purpose on holiday weekends. They get hopelessly overwhelmed. And the the current Tesla V2 superchargers are pretty crap giving only 60-ish kW when full and yet still charging 70 cents per kWh. I love my Model Y but i'll be...

    Aussie queues this long weekend

I just passed through Port Macquarie and Coffs harbour and I could only describe the charging situation as pandemonium. Port Macquarie was a parking lot with cars queuing there all day including right now. When I was there a few hours ago I counted ~15 cars queued and speeds had dropped to...

    Queensland EV Superhighway-Unfit for purpose

Agree. It seems ridiculous to spend all the effort running the power infrastructure to the stall and then only install a single charger. Especially when those chargers are a slow 50kW. That basically guarantees a several hour wait time on weekends and makes road trips very difficult. Tesla has...

    Queensland EV Superhighway-Unfit for purpose

In addition to the breakdowns, the Queensland EV super highway chargers are simply too slow. The ones up the bruce highway are only 50kW which basically means that every single stop will take an hour. They really should be 100kW minimum.

Disappointing DC charge performance from the 4680 Model Y

Looks like the 4680 Model Y has been pulled from sale. I wonder why. https://driveteslacanada.ca/news/tesla-pulls-model-y-awd-from-us-market/

    Model 3 Highland live now

That’s my understanding too. Sometimes a handbrake is referred to as a ‘e-brake’ as it is cable operated and can operate in a hydraulic failure emergency.
  28. P

    ARENA/NRMA national fast charging network

The internal resistance of lithium ion batteries is fairly flat throughout the charge cycle. Also a good equation, but it resolves a different variable (power rather than voltage).
  29. P

    ARENA/NRMA national fast charging network

V=IR Given the resistance (R) is fixed, as the pack voltage rises the supplied voltage (V) has to rise too to provide the same current (I).

    Model 3 Highland live now

Still no 360 view on these right? That's the one feature that I'm hanging out for.

No indicator stalks? Surely they can't be serious?

Disappointing DC charge performance from the 4680 Model Y

Charge rate scales with battery capacity. The figures are a bit rubbery but we know the 4680 has ~10-13% more capacity than the LFP cells. Thus it would be expected to absorb about 10% more energy (kWh) over the same period. In reality the 4680 charges less over the time period which means that...
  33. P

Disappointing DC charge performance from the 4680 Model Y

Yeah if you're happy to wait then it's not a big deal. But if you scale the performance by battery size then it appears that the 4680 cells are underperforming their peers by 15-20%. That's a bit of a bummer given that at their 2020 Battery Day, Tesla claimed that the tabless design would...
  34. P

Disappointing DC charge performance from the 4680 Model Y

No they are different capacity. The MY 4680 pack has about 68kWh and the MY/M3 LFP pack has about 62kWh. The reviewers have kindly uploaded a spreadsheet with kWH figures - Out of Spec 10% Challenge This shows the MY 4680 charging 27kWh in 15 minutes, whereas the M3 LFP charged 29kWh in 15...

Why has Tesla's charging advice changed

I agree. Ignore Elon and follow the advice from Tesla. Also bear in mind that historically Tesla was very invested in ternary Lithium chemistries (NCA/NMC 18650, 21700, 4680). I imagine that Elon Musk probably wanted to downplay any degradation concerns to establish consumer confidence. But...

    Ampol AmpCharge network

The 30 minute average charge session only supplies 28kWh? 🤨 Either the chargers are really slow or people don't know how to use them. I have Chargefox receipts showing almost 30kWh over 15 minutes, from when I was doing the Sydney to Brissie run.
  37. P

Disappointing DC charge performance from the 4680 Model Y

Hey people I just saw an interesting video you might like. The guys over at out of spec reviews ran a 15 minute charge test from 10% SOC to simulate road trip conditions. Unfortunately the 4680 Model Y only got from 10% to 49% (i.e 39% added) in that period. That seems a bit slower than the...

    Ampol AmpCharge network

Ahh bummer. Looks like I'll be sticking with Evie and Chargefox ultra-rapid chargers. The 80kW Ampol units are just too slow for my roadtrips.
  39. P

    Ampol AmpCharge network

Hey I’ve been out of the loop. Are Ampol chargers still gimped to 80kW on Tesla and other 400V EVs?

    Tesla Model Y-LR in Australia

Out of interest, where are you getting your seat covers? I'm interested
  41. P

    Tesla Model Y-LR in Australia

I wouldn't be too upset, the 4680 has been a big disappointment so far. Based on calculations from EPA filings the 4680 looks to have 13% less energy density than the older 2170 packs. It's barely got more capacity than the LFP packs, and yet it can't be charged to more than 90% regularly...
  42. P

    Tesla Model Y-LR in Australia

I could be wrong, but I thought the Chinese build LR & P models actually used LG NMC batteries? My understanding is that the Panasonic NCA cells are limited to American made models.
  43. P

Using Waze On Tesla Model Y

Yeah but that's not really the same. I'd much prefer being able to run the actual app.
  44. P

Using Waze On Tesla Model Y

On the flip side, Carplay and Android Auto lets you run Plugshare on the car. Imagine being able to navigate and check in to a charger on Plugshare using your car!
  45. P

Using Waze On Tesla Model Y

Waze is delivered over Carplay and/or Android Auto. Tesla refuses to allow this, so your best option is a phone cradle. Yes, it makes you feel a bit like an Uber driver and is a strange anachronism on a $70,000 car.
  46. P

    Ampol AmpCharge network

Agree. I certainly wouldn't be choosing to use Ampol at those prices unless I had no other choice. My EV can charge at 170kW, so I'm certainly not going to be paying top dollar to charge at a measly 75kW.

Matching touch-up paint for the 19 inch Gemini rim (wheel)?

Hey Guys, managed to put a bit of curb rash on my 19" Gemini Model Y wheel. I'm planning on pulling the rim cover off then giving the rash a light sand and putting on some touchup paint. It looks to be a silvery colour Does anyone know which colours match? Something available locally would be...

LR AWD getting a new battery chemistry for 2023?

Agree. I think these are made in China LG NMC/NCM cells, not LFP. The LG cells have been widely used both inside and outside of China.

Austin Model Y Trunk Cargo Tie Down Hooks?

When the tie downs are under tension do you find that they 'squeeze' the floor? It looks like they might be a bit narrower than the boot floor?
