Model S 2018 worth keeping before battery warranty expires?

Does anyone have experience with selling or trading in a year before the battery warranty runs out vs right at the 8 year mark? I have a 2017. I plan to keep it one more year but will the value take a significant hit if there is nothing left on the battery and motor warranty?

    Are bragging rights worth $15k?

I think if you want the Plaid you already know it. I hardly ever floor my lowly S so there is zero reason for me to get the Plaid.

FSD Price Cut to $12k Tonight, Aug 31/ Sept 1 2023

It doesn’t matter if you keep cars for a long time. You can buy FSD later when you decide it’s worth it. Is it worth $12K today based on current features? Or are you buying a promise (that has been broken for many years) and have fear of price increases? I don’t know, I think I could find better...

    2024 Tesla MS Rumors

Makes complete sense to me. Why would they invest in these low volume vehicles that seem to have a shrinking margin? I don’t know anything about these batteries but pouring money to figure out how to put them in the S/X makes no sense to me either. Just my uninformed opinion.

FSD Price Cut to $12k Tonight, Aug 31/ Sept 1 2023

I have FSD. The resale value seems to be $0 so I wouldn't do it for that. This is certainly true if you trade the car in, especially back to Tesla. Maybe private sale is better but I haven't tested that. As far as functionality, I use autopilot on the highway very often, which I believe comes...

Tesla drops prices on X/S $20k. All colors free. Bye bye resale

Oh my. Now I’m making nonsensical generalizations. Sigh. I’m not one to insult people, even online. But I have noticed a dig with each comment and it’s really not necessary. I am simply stating my opinion and I am more than happy to learn from yours. Yes there were people who paid crazy...

Tesla drops prices on X/S $20k. All colors free. Bye bye resale

The problem is that the people who bought these cars new and are taking significant depreciation hits are not rejoicing as much. That is not healthy. I don’t think it’s good that EVs are not holding their value. And I don’t think it’s good that Tesla is forced to cut prices. But hey, maybe we...

Tesla drops prices on X/S $20k. All colors free. Bye bye resale

I don't think there is a wrong way to apply the TCO calculator. While all used car prices have come down from their peaks, Tesla used prices have gone down way more. This means the TCO for Tesla is far worse than it was even pre-pandemic when I bought my car. Is it even debatable to say that...

Tesla drops prices on X/S $20k. All colors free. Bye bye resale

I didn't come up with the calculation for Total Cost of Ownership. Depreciation is one of the biggest contributors to the overall cost of a car. It's simple math to figure out if the lower initial purchase price compensates for the additional expected depreciation. If the lower purchase price...

Tesla drops prices on X/S $20k. All colors free. Bye bye resale

Terrible resale values for Tesla and EV's in general is not good for the EV market as a whole. One of the reasons, if not the main reason, people buy EV's is that they are cheaper to run and maintain. Tesla puts this savings front and center on their website. But saving a few dollars on gas is...

LOL. $38K for a 2106?? That is outrageous!

Looking for an older Model S - Do I understand the differences? What amenities can I skip?

I don't think there is anything special about 2017. A Model S from 2018+ will be even better since these cars keep improving. It's just a matter of finding one in your price range. A used Model S is a really good value given recent depreciation. It shouldn't be that hard to find one.

    Free unlimited supercharging transfer?

This is an old thread, but I wanted to provide an update with the latest information I found since it might help others in the future: Tesla Free Supercharging (Unlimited): How to Check if You Have It! This is very confusing. I chatted in with Tesla and asked the question about transferring Free Unlimited Supercharging to a new owner. Unfortunately I think you are right. It is not transferable. This is the best info I found: Does Free Supercharging Transfer When You Sell Your Tesla? I will double check with Tesla because Free Unlimited Supercharging is listed in the specs of the car in my Tesla app. But I do know Tesla can...

Looks like Tesla brought back the standard range Model S and X!

If it’s the same weight then it’s likely the same battery which means you can charge to 100%. The standard range is actually a great deal. Blazing fast charging to 100% at Superchargers and basically the same daily range as the long range at the recommended 80%. 300+ miles of range would be more...

Looking for an older Model S - Do I understand the differences? What amenities can I skip?

Yep. I'm so spoiled with the S I don't even realize how good it is. I just get in it and go. It's so nice inside and out. The kbb value, at least trade-in, is so low that I can't think of another car that is even close to this good for the price. To top it off, the Tesla trade-in quote is $10K...

Looking for an older Model S - Do I understand the differences? What amenities can I skip?

Mine has the all glass roof. By the time I bought it in 2017, there was no option to buy a sunroof. I wouldn't have opted for it anyway since I don't use a sunroof. The glass roof looks interesting, especially from the backseat. As far as what I would ask for, I would just use kbb which is...

Looking for an older Model S - Do I understand the differences? What amenities can I skip?

Interesting to see this comment. I have a mid 2017 75D that I am thinking of selling or trading in. I'm the original owner. 70K miles. Always garaged and charged at home. Unlimited supercharging. FSD. Clean, etc. Dealers I have talked to tell me it's trash. Tesla through their trade-in offer...

    Expected depreciation

The 8 year mark and warranty expiration is also why I probably won’t keep the car more than an additional 2 years. It makes sense that there could be a depreciation cliff at that point.
  26. T

    Expected depreciation

I’m trying to decide if I should sell my ‘17 S75D with 70K miles. Trade in offers are around $25K - 28K. Private sale will be higher but I don’t want to deal with that. Any thoughts on expected depreciation over the next 2 years? If my car will be worth $15K in 2 years I might as well sell...

    New vehicle purchase frustrations

Honestly… I don’t think I will replace my Model S with another Tesla. There are a lot of good things but service is not good and I just don’t like all the pricing games. Buying a car in this price range is in large part an emotional purchase.

'15 70D: End of Warranty Questions to Ask

Mine is a '17 75D so I still have a couple of years of DU/Battery warranty. But looking ahead, I was thinking that I would keep it a maximum of 2 more years and trade it in to avoid any big issues with DU/Battery/electronics, etc. Are most people keeping their cars past this warranty? Seems...

    Have to vent

That's an interesting quote, even though it's so old now. It's simply describing a price skimming strategy for entering the car market. It was obvious that this was what Tesla was doing, but cool to see it spelled out so clearly. And even more cool to see how well Tesla executed on this...

    Have to vent

You may be ok with it, but the value of the deal you made yesterday would absolutely change if others were paying $1,000 today. When I buy a car, I don't just look at the purchase price. I consider the overall TCO. Depreciation is usually the most significant factor when calculating TCO. Tesla...

    Have to vent

Used cars going for more than new ones was an aberration due to the pandemic and chip shortage. Nobody expects a depreciating asset to go UP. Sure, you won’t complain if your depreciating asset goes up, but it’s unexpected. It’s also unexpected when your depreciating asset depreciates by 2x or...

    Have to vent

LOL. Brakes too. Lots of savings there. And yes, I do have full self driving not to mention free supercharging. Now that my car value is approaching zero, yes, the depreciation is quite low as well. Probably. Ok, it's not quite zero, but to have my 6 year old car depreciate 15K+ in 6 months is a...

    Have to vent

Wow. I was just looking at the new Model S and amazed to see how much the price dropped. I was thinking it would be cool to upgrade my ‘17 75D. But seeing the constant price drops and given that my own cars’s value is probably approaching zero, maybe I will keep my money. Funny how they...

How to get trade-in quote via the app?

I thought about trading in my ‘17 S75D for something new. The best offer (not from Tesla) was $33K. Thats $15K less than one year ago. I know used car values declined last year but this is a 30% drop. Even new cars don’t depreciate that much in their first year. It’s somewhat funny that when I...

Selling my Model S as soon as comes back from service

Interesting (or actually concerning) to see all these problems. I've had my '17 for almost 6 years and about 70K miles. There have been a myriad of small-ish problems and I do dread going to service and wasting hours there. But I can't remember a single issue in the last couple of years or so. I...

Is Elon going the way of the VW Beetle and Porsche 911?

Thanks. I hadn’t seen that thread. I guess the OP had scratched that 911 itch and then some. I would love a P-car for fun weekend drives and keep the 75D for everything else. But 2 cars would be a pain, not to mention expensive.

An honest review of the yoke

You may be right on this. I was getting my 75D serviced and had a chance to walk around. I looked at the new S and thought it looks good. But it so similar to mine, it would be hard to justify getting the new one. The yoke doesn't help though. I have a nice full steering wheel with stalks and I...

Is Elon going the way of the VW Beetle and Porsche 911?

Has anyone transitioned from a Porsche (911 or 718) to a Model 3 Performance? Looks aside, I'm wondering about impressions about driving dynamics like handling and steering feel differences. Most reviews focus on straight-line acceleration which is nice, but to me a car comes alive in the bends.

    HDPE/Track Day Insurance

But I don't think Tesla warranty covers consumables like brakes anyway right? Not sure, but in any case I consider myself "reasonable" so I wouldn't track a car and then go to the manufacturer to complain about my tires, brakes and suspension wear. In any case, I get your point about...

I would read terms carefully for other manufacturers as well before making this a deciding factor.

M3P - Who switched from a (true) sports car?

$300 sounds much better to me. How good would you say it makes the M3P? Is it roughly on par with a BMW M3 in terms of handling and steering? I know there is no perfect comparison.
  42. T

    HDPE/Track Day Insurance

I read the warranty terms and they explicitly state no track use. I find it strange for a car with track mode. Obviously people are going regardless.

M3P - Who switched from a (true) sports car?

Is there any way to fix the steering? If the MPP coilovers can fix the handling, is there something to make the steering feel communicative like a sports car? I don't think I'm asking for too much. I just want a car that drives like a Porsche and accelerates like a Tesla.... ;)

M3P - Who switched from a (true) sports car?

Thanks. I wish there was an OEM solution for this so I don't have to deal with 3rd parties and risk warranty and stuff like that.

M3P - Who switched from a (true) sports car?

Love this thread. Has the M3P improved in the handling department in the latest iteration? I don’t care too much about straight line speed. I’m much more interested in how the car goes through turns.

    HDPE/Track Day Insurance

Can’t say much about insurance but I’m super curious how your track day goes and especially how charging goes for you. I’m considering swapping my Model S for the M3P so I can go play at the track. I just worry about how long the M3P can stay on track. In addition to wrecking it of course, which...
