My 2013 P85+ got the infamous bms_u029 "Charge level reduced" last week and after reading up on the forum and going back and forth with Tesla Service I decided to write up what I learned. Much of this info is available on this forum but buried in various threads. My hope is to make this post...
TL;DR below
I have a 2013 P85+ and the last few months I noticed what felt like rear steering. When accelerating the rear end would shift sideways and the car would pull right. During regen it would shift the other way and pull left. My suspicion was rear toe links. There's not much that can...
My 2013 P85+ got a new drive unit last spring so it was time for the fluid change. I followed a guide on youtube (first hit if you search for "model s fluid change"). It's an easy job and the biggest part is removing and re-installing the plastic shield (many bolts of 2 different types). Plus...
Takata Recalls Another 35-40M Airbags, Includes Tesla, Jaguar & Land Rover
I have not been able to find any info on which Teslas are included in the recall.
My P85+ is once again getting close to tire replacement time. I'm tired of replacing rear tires every 7K miles at $1,200/pair.
Planning to go with Hankook 275/30-21 & 245/35-21. I know there are some on here that have this combo on the staggered rims, so wanted to get your experience with...
FTC crackdown on a Nissan dealership results in 8 felony charges:
Ex-dealership staffers face prison
The FTC has taken 252 actions against dealerships the past year alone for deceptive marketing, odometer fraud and financial (loan) fraud. So much for the dealership argument that they are...
Apparently it's not only the P85D that will get faster with a SW update. Elon tweeted:
"P85 acceleration will also improve, but not quite as much"
Elon Musk on Twitter:
In a loaner S85 today so thought I'd write up some differences I noted, good & bad, compared to my older P85+.
My P85+ is a July '13 car. No parking sensors, no autopilot HW. 11k miles. With it being a "+" it has 21" wheels and air.
Loaner S85 has all the latest HW. 1k miles. Also had 19"...
Anyone had a similar problem? When I check the current location of my car in the phone app it gives me a map of western China. The car is in Texas.
Reboot time?
The question of rear toe comes up on a regular basis and how one might measure it. As many of us have found out, having incorrect rear toe will quickly destroy tires. This is especially true with the 21" wheels as their shorter sidewall is less able to compensate for incorrect alignment.
First...
Just a little story I wrote this morning.
In the year 2064
'All this just to go 400 km', the tech mused as he looked at the insides of the old battery. He was the owner and sole employee of Teslas to go, part of a cottage industry keeping the old classics on the road. The company specialized...
Rear wheel drive (RWD) is essential to me. I've owned a total of 2 front-wheel drive (FWD) cars in my life and did not care for how they drove at all. If a car is not available in RWD, I'll look for something else.
I suspect I'm a small minority, but let's see how many of you are like me.
I chronicled my quest for the most energy efficient alignment settings here: Results of testing front toe-in vs energy usage
Today I went for a 30 mile drive. The car is a P85+ on the factory 21" tires, so energy usage tends to be higher than cars with 19's.
I did nothing to minimize energy...
Went by the Dallas SC today and checked pricing for the P85+ rear tires. Tirerack wants $537/ea for the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 in 265/35-21.
The SC has them for $440. They said the price was lowered just a short time ago and used to be over $700.
At $440 I'll probably stay with the PS2s.
Although Tirerack.com doesn't list the Pirelli Zeros in 265/35-21, it seems they do exist. At least Discount Tire shows them at $387/ea:

I'm considering getting a 5kW system for my house, but there're so many products out there and lots of installers. Wondering if anyone has had it done here in TX and your experience with it. How did the install work out, any unforeseen costs, performance, issues...
So far I have 2 quotes:
20x...
The weather has been very stable the last few days so I decided to test the influence of front toe on energy consumption. To my surprise there is a very real and rather large effect when changing toe.
Car: P85+ on the factory Michelin PS2 tires (21").
Drive cycle: 7 mile commute, typical...
First I want to say this post is not a slam on Tesla. They are trying very hard to be the best. I have worked on cars as a hobby for 25 years and long ago realized it is impossible to get a perfect alignment at any shop. I believe this is because the alignment machines quickly go out of...
We had a week of damp/rainy weather and my brakes had a very annoying squeal whenever I came to a complete stop. I talked to my service center and he says there's a new brake rotor they can install that is supposed to fix the squeal, but it's 7 lbs heavier than the old one.
Wondering if anyone...
I often listen to a radio station that does not have RDS so I just get the default icon in the display which is pretty boring. I'd like to use a custom image/logo instead. Any way to do this?
And yes, this is one of the biggest "issues" I have with the car. Goes to show just how great they are.
I see some Plano folks posting and was wondering if any of you know how far from the floor the electrical outlet has to be?
Someone once told me Plano requires 4 feet above the floor for an outlet in a garage. I've also heard 18". I'm hoping 18" as it would be much easier to put the outlet...
I'm getting close to buying a Model S P85, but my real world experience has been limited to looking at one at Cars & Coffee in Plano (owner AWOL :) ), and seeing them on the road. Starwood motors has some for sale, but I would like to see one close up without sales person pressure. Also like to...
