That's an interesting observation. Some of the cell aging is time-related, regardless of use, but Tesla told me when I got my car as CPO in early 2016 that they expected 12-15 years life on those packs, so that also makes another failure mechanism seem more likely than cell degradation...

In the end, I had to pay an additional $6439 to get the new 90 instead of the reman 85 pack. Given that the new pack should last much longer and I have (at least in the beginning) 30 miles more range and much faster supercharging (hopefully, have yet to verify), that seems worth it to me.

They didn't. At first it said 270 miles rated range at 100% SOC, but after they upgraded the configuration to reflect the 90 kWh pack it is now 295 miles @100%.
