Off topic but yes you can DIY the retrofit yourself in about 15 minutes. You can pick up the new charging board from a service center (Р1537264 - 00 - B) then all you’ll need is a “bundle of wires” harness.

I’ve had very good luck giving the wheel a good tug every few minutes. Zero disengagements as long as I move it every so often.

I’ve had zero disengagements now with my steering wheel weight as long as I give the wheel a good tug every few minutes. Better than constant nags or strapping a giant water bottle onto the wheel 😂

I'm impressed with the capability of FSD when it works, but I experience FSD randomly slowing down to a complete stop almost daily.

Easy for them to defeat though, make steering wheel scrolls (speed/vol) not valid for clearing nag.

Tapping into the steering wheel controls and emulating a vol+/vol- would also clear the hands on nag so this would be a way to circumvent wheel weight detection as there is no wheel weight but still clears nags.

Can be done much simpler. Follow the wiring of the steering wheel controls to the passenger footwell area. Add a simple microcontroller (I'm sure there's also a constant 12V line in that area too that can also power the MCU) and have it randomly every couple minutes short the required steering...

I agree without an official/verified Tesla engineer chiming in, we won't know for sure. That being said, I believe there is enough anecdotal evidence to strongly suggest they did indeed add something that does not like the steering wheel counterweight at the very least. There's also this:

I did opt-in to the beta, which you do on the car via the autopilot menu I believe. Once you do that you'll have a safety score in the app, if you have that then I believe you should be all set. I did that in October

Well, FWIW, the only time I've seen it disengage with a large red wheel, zero warnings prior, and AP disabled for the rest of the drive is with the introduction of 36.X and some code that appears to be wheel weight detection. Here's a thread I made about it...

Take what Elon says with a grain of salt... I wouldn't take that as a guarantee. And especially if it's being derived from "without you touching the wheel" he might have unknowingly exaggerated there and meant more to talk about the capability of FSD beta and less about hinting that wheel touch...
