Supercharger - Fort Bragg, CA (LIVE 21 May 2021, 12 stalls)

not really, unless you're staying at one of the few resorts with destination chargers. But FB is not much further, and is a fun little town to spend an hour or two in.

App takes forever to connect to car

How does one go about doing this? I would *LOVE* to escalate the entire dashcam implementation to the responsible engineer, as I think it stinks. (Sorry, but it really does)
  3. ChopinBlues

App takes forever to connect to car

So it sounds like there's 2 different issues here with this delay in connecting. The one you're describing does not sound like the one I'm seeing. Where are you seeing a "404" error? This is usually an error put up by a browser, not an app. My issue is clearly one of the car not being...

App takes forever to connect to car

The app must be running in the background on your phone at all times. The service rep here also claimed that you should turn on full time location tracking in the app, but I'm not convinced this is necessary, and would be concerned about unnecessary battery usage.

App takes forever to connect to car

Of course it's the car waking up -- that's exactly what I was saying. But it's not "a bit", it's like 30 seconds, which makes no sense. Does your iPhone/iPad/Mac take 30 seconds to wake up? My MS took maybe 3-4. And it doesn't matter how close you are -- the car could be in another state...

App takes forever to connect to car

So I just replaced my early '14 MS with a brand new M3 (3 weeks old). Using the same app and same iPhone, the MS used to connect reasonably promptly. The M3 is WAY SLOW to connect, unless I have recently connected to it. So I'm pretty sure it's the car, not the app. Another clue is that...

Tesla is an AWFUL software company

There's only one thing I really hate about the door handles -- you can't find them in the dark. Can't believe they didn't install some lights that turn on when you approach.

Tesla is an AWFUL software company

I agree with the original premise, which is that Tesla has been doing a poor job with software lately, but your examples are not the best, as most of them have to do with U/I, which is not quite the same thing, although I would agree that the U/I is at best awkward. The general problems I've...

    Dashcam suppose to auto save?

It's a SIMPLE, no cost, software change to make it work rationally, like every other dashcam on the market
  10. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam suppose to auto save?

I have heard others on this forum try to use that as an excuse, and that's what it is, just an excuse. Here's an analogy: What if the heater in your ICE car didn't function the way you expect like a normal heater, and you were told that the heat is generated by the running of the engine, and...

    Dashcam suppose to auto save?

Ya, after reading the (very poorly done) manual like 3 times, and playing with it for 2 weeks, I've finally figured out all the quirks. My big complaint is the fact that it starts erasing the clips it recorded while driving as soon as you park the car, and after one hour, all the driving video...

2 members have trashed my reaction score...

Thank You for your kind and perceptive remarks. Looks like someone is listening, as my reaction score has been restored to roughly where it was before this fiasco begin. You're also the first person I've seen in a really long time who has a join date earlier than mine! (other than moderators)
  13. ChopinBlues

TeslaCam why only 1 hour of video?

You are 100% correct -- It buys you nothing to keep overwriting the one hour, rather than waiting 'til it's almost full. But it's even worse than that, as what I'm seeing in my brand new M3 with latest s/w is that it doesn't even leave the last hour of video in place -- it erases it while...
  14. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam suppose to auto save?

In theory, you just tap the dashcam icon, which brings up a menu with a 'Save' item -- I'm just not sure what exactly it saves.
  15. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam suppose to auto save?

I have found this "last hour" business to be very inconsistent. But there is one thing about it that is quite repeatable, and, IMHO, just plain wrong: the last hour's worth of driving footage gradually goes away when the car is parked. Note that I have sentry turned OFF, so it's not like...

2 members have trashed my reaction score...

I do agree with, and appreciate, most of the points being made here, but notice that almost all of you have positive reaction scores in the hundreds or even thousands, while mine is well into negative territory. And some of the later posts in the 2 threads involved did mention my reaction...
  17. ChopinBlues

2 members have trashed my reaction score...

Well, that would probably only antagonize them further, bringing on more negative reactions. Besides, one can probably figure it out by inspecting my posts.
  18. ChopinBlues

2 members have trashed my reaction score...

...and one of them is continuing to do so, on every single post, no matter how benign. I have brought this issue up with various moderators, and they either ignore me, or claim that nothing can be done. Note that I have been a member here for almost EIGHT years, without any issues, until the...

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

Ya know, at this point, I really don’t get it. I ask a simple honest question about a term I don’t understand, and I get a bunch of smart ass answers. What is going on here? Yes, I’ll admit, I chose a poor title for this thread. And yes, I was annoyed about the operation of the dashcam...

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

Nope — only been using the Tesla-supplied flash drive in the glovebox
  22. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

No chance — in fact, I have to keep turning sentry mode off, as it constantly turns itself on, and I don’t want it on to preserve battery life. It continues to strike me that this whole dashcam business is extremely buggy.

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

Well, it looks IIke I already need a service appointment then, as currently, the “dashcam” is not recording anything while I’m drivIng. And Yes, I have it turned on, the red dot appears on the on-screen icon. And yes, I even tried a re-format
  24. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

I did enable the “save on honk” feature, and briefly played with sentry mode. I have also pulled the flash drive a couple times in the past few days and verified that it contained video clips in both the recent and saved folders. I also just now did a drive reformat to see if that helps. On...

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

I was programming in Fortran on punch cards and 300 baud timeshare terminals in 1973. First exposure to Unix in 1980. And Mac OS, which I have been heavily involved in since the early days, is largely Unix based, as I’m sure you know. I think I know a thing or two about Unix and s/w...

Model 3 Dashcam not recording, but Sentry is?

Give it a few days — mine did not start working until about 3-4 days in. Or perhaps it was based on mileage, as I didn’t drive it much the first few days
  27. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

At this point I can only presume that you are technically incapable of addressing the technical issues I have raised
  28. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

That because there’s 2 jerks here who went and marked every single post I’ve left with a thumbs down, even the totally innocuous ones. I’ve already complained about this issue to the forum moderator. And you, like almost everyone else, still hasn’t answered my question, or even pretended to...

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

HUH? Is it against the rules here to criticize Tesla? Is it against the rules here to disagree with someone else on the forum? Just what the hell is going on here?
  30. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

Of which your post is a terrific example. Instead of specifically stating what your objections are, and/or making a cogent argument for what you don’t agree with, you just post a snide remark.
  31. ChopinBlues

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

Marking every one my posts thumbs down no matter what makes you look like a fool. I am a specialist: I did s/w engineering for 30 years. And I was good at it. But even I had bugs. All s/w has bugs. The post by dwtaylorpdx is exactly what I’m talking about. Why take a chance on some...

    Dashcam implementation is idiotic

Look, I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here, or quibble over minor details, but I have now read that dashcam section carefully for a 3rd time. Note that it's only 3/4 page long (the remainder discusses the mechanics of the flash drive and USB ports), and it's at best rudimentary, and...

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

Of course everything you just said here applies precisely to you as well. People here just argue for the sake of arguing, and wanting to be right, rather than learning something, and frequently don't even know what they're talking about. The main use for a flash is for whatever you want to...

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

I'm not sure I agree with everything you said, but let's say I am off by a factor of 500. My Maniacal salesman also drives at least 5-10 times as much as the average person, which brings the factor down to the 50-100 number that requires spending at most another 10 bucks every year or two...

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

Do you understand what a dashcam is, and why you would want one? Tesla's implementation here could easily turn out to be completely useless in a situation where you might desparately need these recordings. Again, no other commercial dashcam (that I'm aware of; also see the comment above from...

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

I don't care what over-engineered package they put this in -- this is nothing but a cheap low-end, short range radio, with a minuscule amount of cpu. Have you ever opened up your standard garage-door opener to replace the battery? Or consider an iPhone, which has multiple radios, far more...

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

Is there someone at Tesla I could contact to try to explain to them how pointless and self-defeating this approach is? At this point, I really do feel justified in calling this implementation 'idiotic' on another thread, which I took a lot of grief for. Erasing perfectly good video, rather...

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

not making money? As I pointed out earlier, this is no more than a 5-dollar piece of silicon. So, figure around 300 bucks to drive to your house and probably 1 hour to install (I will know the exact time in 2 days, when I get mine). Not bad money for a mechanic
  41. ChopinBlues

    Snippiness 2.0

you are wrong. I know what I bought, you don't. And the point, which you're apparently too feebleminded to get, is that this was a standard feature on a car that was 20 grand cheaper.

don't worry -- you're not in the way at all, especially since you're wrong -- I have an Outback, not a Forester, and it was included in the the model i got. So stop and think before you open your mouth next time with an irrelevant rant of your own

So videos are actually showing up on my flash drive now -- they were definitely not there yesterday; there wasn't even a 'Recent clips' folder. However, I would like to clarify something: let's say I park the car after a long drive, right after which there will presumably be an hour's...

oK, sorry for my snippy reply; you're right, most of my issues are not all that significant -- it was just the combination of all those items within a few days of taking delivery that started to add up. The screen crashing is not insignificant, but the one that really got me going was the...

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

do you consider it an "insignificant thing" when your laptop crashes and hangs on a regular basis? This has happened to me 4-5 times already, inside of a week. I have already called Tesla support more times inside of a week, than I did in the entire EIGHT YEARS that I owned my Model S -- and...
  48. ChopinBlues

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

OK, since it sounds like you're intimately familiar with the operational details, let me ask you about the dashcam. Every dashcam i have ever owned constantly records video footage while you're driving and stores these clips in the internal (ssd) storage, overwriting older clips as needed when...

    Very disappointing new M3 experience

First of all, what you need to know is that I have owned a Model S for almost EIGHT years (yes, I was one of Tesla's very early customers -- Note my join date to the left). I have been so thrilled with that car, that there was never any question that my next car would be another Tesla. My...
