Suspension problems. OEM dampers are failing.

An error often made is that the stiffer suspension is the sportier suspension. Not so. Only a wheel on the ground can transfer traction.

Sentry Mode Catches Hit in Parking Lot

For me, the elephant in the room issue on this is that cars with front steering wheels (= all cars) are fairly incompatible with parking at a 90 degree angle. Look at the radius normal wheels describe and the low margin of error for this. It is obvious that us Xpelled Ceramic coated almost 6...

Thinking about joining legal action on recent massive price cut

It has been announced from the very beginnings of Tesla that it is the expressed purpose of the company to bring down the price of electric individual transportation. The intended lower end price of the Model 3 has been announced before it was ever sold. In fact, there were numerous...

Has anyone put in an aftermarket motor yet?

If the concept ever requires to not use the motor on that axle, you either need a clutch  or you cannot use a permanent magnet rotor, because a permanent magnet rotor will otherwise always resist/ work as a generator. Which is why they use the combination and not two of the same.

Performance not getting 310 miles promised

Because seals, gears and bearings are comparatively stiff and have not settled very well. In ICE vehicles this is more pronounced because of piston friction and more gearing, but should be different from zero even in EVs.

Performance not getting 310 miles promised

Even though there are fewer parts to break in in EVs, shouldn’t efficiency increase over the first 10,000 to 20,000 miles? It has been my impression that things improve after a while by 5% in EV and up to 10% in ICE compared to new.

    Curb Rash

Slightly off topic: it would be so easy for architects to use curb stones that are rounded or angled. It seems that parking lot design is the least favorite assignment left for the non-talented in many instances. 90 degree angled spots also crack me up: can the rear axle in architects’ cars...

    Obsidian Black - Worth it?

Black is not a color. It is a hobby. The sky is blue, so blue colors will shine even on a grey day. No other color can do that. The M3 red is awesome.

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

My point exactly. Current AP tries to run but cannot walk. This does not mean they should not do it, but current performance is aimed at the gallery instead of truly improving safety: No stationary object detection, no radar out the back, additional cameras exposed to rain and dirt. Is it...
  15. HyperMiler

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I understand and appreciate where you are coming from but my point is the inability to detect stationary objects is not a given but a cost saving simplification that AP designers („autopilot“) use, to achieve more visible effects faster and cheaper. And it is a business decision I would like...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

May I add 4.) Tesla AP in its current version directed the car into the wall at full speed and would have saved a life if it had avoided that. 5.) The currently available data interpretation is directed by a manager with a $ 50 billion bonus at stake. Seriously, neutral data interpretation...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Would it be correct to expect that when AP has 10thousands of trajectories that are all superimposable on one another, that deviation from that path should trigger some alarm? What good is all the data collection otherwise?
  18. HyperMiler

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

This is exactly on topic. Attenuators are not so good, as we can see, on high speed exits. These do not apply to or exist in the UK as much, with the narrower road lower speed concept of roundabout intersections even on freeways. Any safety concept that will force a vehicle into a more or...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

This is how it’s done on the no speed limit Autobahn. It was introduced nationwide after a big discussion on guardrail slicing through passenger (car)s way back, I think in the seventies. Fraction of the cost. Is the news full of airborne vehicles? No. Do they put a speed limit and signs out...

I fully agree that Tesla is pushing the EV envelope, preventing the establishment from stalling it. All the more I think vehicle and service quality will become an achilles heel as soon as competition with similar battery sizes becomes available, i.e. within the next year.

Video - Model X vs Jaguar I-Pace drag race commercial

Don’t know about the US but in many parts of Europe there are CCS chargers (if few) at every gas stop on our freeways, and monopoly chargers not open to all brands will no longer be allowed to be built. I think it would be helpful for Tesla to adjust to increasing competition not only by...

    Follow up to employee termination

At the end of the day, Tesla fired Aaron because of their identity problem as a sales organization, and not his wrongdoing. Clearly, this is not what the company claims to stand for. The root cause of the problem, I would hold, is the exaggerated list price of the performance models.

Yet Another Comparison: Bolt vs BMW i3 vs Model S

My perspective, I admit, is from having the 34 kWh version of the i3 as a second car. Warped Rotors Whats my options?

Warping can often be produced by a rigorous braking maneuver followed by holding the brake clamped as the car sits at a standstill, e.g coming down a hill, a ramp into a redlight or a semiurgent or emergency stop from higher speed. This will lead to the brake rotor (disk) unevenly cooling...

Why is the charge port on the left side when we drive on the right side of the road in North America

Now that would be a design issue easily addressed by how the cord is stowed in the car. Could very cheaply be addressed by adjusting load according to how far you pull it out, or charging start depending on pulling out the cable, or the car slowly reeling out the cable by itself. Completely...

Why do electric cars not have a (self retracting) cord like any other electric appliance, to be plugged into a socket on a wall or pedestal? Tesla & BMW Fall Short in IIHS Safety Tests

As there are more than 100,000 cars out there, seems to me that the number should still be very good (single digit?) compared to the average for 2011 vehicles of 28 deaths per million. But probably not zero. Certainly the safest of the high performance sports vehicles, though, would be my...
