iOS 16 Public Beta - Tesla App and Watch for Tesla App

Update: Just installed Tesla software 2022.20.7. That fixed the remote unlock and similar problems. Only calendar sync remains broken.

iOS 16 Public Beta - Tesla App and Watch for Tesla App

Update: now running iOS 16 Public Beta 2 (same as Developer Beta 4) and no improvement. Calendar sync and remote unlock still not working.

iOS 16 Public Beta - Tesla App and Watch for Tesla App

I tried the MCU reboot but with no effect. Most things work between iOS 16 Beta 1 and the Tesla; the things that don't work for me are calendar sync and any kind of control, like unlocking the car. Anyone else having the same symptoms?

iOS 16 Public Beta - Tesla App and Watch for Tesla App

Same here. To be clear, I am on iOS 16 Public Beta 1, *not* the Developer Beta. Other stuff works -- phone connects to the car, contacts are there, call history is there, music works. It's just the calendar.

Rear camera, bi-level view - Ever seen this?

I've had that a couple of times. It's some kind of bug. Rebooting fixed it.

New Star Trek TV Series in 2017(Nerdgasm Alert!)

Anyone here watching The Orville? My wife and I love it. It's been described as a spoof of ST, but that's really not accurate: it's a ST-inspired vision of the future in which humans are still humans. We don't all evolve into politically correct perfection, nor do we slide into authoritarian...

Brand new Model S quality issues take months to resolve

Unfortunately I don't expect quality to improve anytime soon -- I actually expect it to keep getting worse until it's so bad that demand suffers, for the simple reason that Tesla's current behavior continues to be rewarded with new orders.

Nav 8.0 - UI not made for driving

Update: really loathing 8.0 at this point. Specifically: (1) It's gotten to the point that I use my iPhone instead of Tesla nav because I can't stand the way it bigfoots the display. (2) It seems totally random whether an app opens in top or bottom half. Well, not entirely random -- it's...

Predictions: Model S 2017 luxury improvements

I predict we get nothing in the way of creature comforts. Tesla's focus is going to be on Model 3, Gigafactory, and AP software. The Model S is four years old and still doesn't even have vanity mirror lighting. You seriously think we're getting rear climate controls?

Tesla on the least reliable cars list - owners agree?

Agreed. And what about oil changes? Shouldn't something the owner has to do every 3,000 miles count against reliability? Same with replacing belts and hoses. "Regularly scheduled maintenance" is still maintenance, and Tesla requires none of it.

Tesla on the least reliable cars list - owners agree?

I've had three issues with my 2014 P85: drive unit needed replacement, sunroof failed to open, and charge port magnet fell off. (Oh, and of course both vanity mirror covers snapped off within the first month -- but since the mirrors aren't illuminated anyway, good riddance.) I don't know...

    Defective windshield on new P100D

It's hard to say without seeing it, and glass is frustratingly hard to photograph. (OT: So are diamonds. Even the most gorgeous, sparkling diamonds look gray when photographed with a cell phone. Not sure why.) If what you're seeing is completely uniform across the entire windshield, it's...

    Defective windshield on new P100D

It wasn't just the windshield. All of the glass was affected. I just didn't notice it until after posting this.
  14. F

    Defective windshield on new P100D

Exactly. That's why I'm going to keep my powder dry until quality improves. I had none of these problems two years ago when I bought a new P85. That car is better made than either of the P100Ds I tried. Scaling is hard.

The ethics and business implication of an 8k $ Autopilot

LOL -- when I first read this, I read "insured" like "ensured", as in "guaranteed". Which made it a wicked burn. ;-)
  16. F

    The last straw

Thanks. I got the car back this morning, and even after spending several weeks in a P100D loaner, I still love it. The P85 is actually smoother and quieter at high speeds (anything over about 85 MPH). I thought I'd miss Autopilot, but I don't. So for anyone who has AP1 and is bummed about...

The ethics and business implication of an 8k $ Autopilot

Speaking as an engineer who designs complex systems -- we don't have the luxury of not caring. Software design consists of two main activities: architecture (the fun part), and an endless series of what-ifs called implementation. All of them have to be addressed, or the software has undefined...

    AP1 owners take heart

If we were talking about a $200 cell phone purchase, I'd agree with you. But this is new territory. There isn't really any precedent for a $100,000 purchase becoming obsoleted a month later. Cars didn't really change very much from one year to the next. Maybe you got a cassette deck in 1990...

US$15.000 NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 supercomputer in every Tesla?

And if that's not confusing enough, NVIDIA has a product line called Tesla, including a model P100 -- completely unrelated to Tesla cars.

    Updated Broswer on its Way!

True. As cool as AP 2.0 will eventually be, nothing would be as exciting as ditching the Tegra 3 for... *anything*. A maxed-out gaming laptop runs about 150W and blows the MCU away. Normal driving is around 15kW (300 Wh/mi * 50 mi/h = 15kW). So you could have world-class compute and graphics...

The ethics and business implication of an 8k $ Autopilot

I think you're underestimating the difficulty of the problem. Building an electric car was trivial by comparison. It didn't require any new inventions, just really good execution of existing technology. By contrast, full autonomy is an unsolved problem. There are many prototypes that can handle...

    Defective windshield on new P100D

Yep. The whole situation got escalated all the way up, and they've handled it pleasantly enough given the circumstances. I don't understand their account management though -- I've been on the phone or email with a different person for almost every step of the process. It's over a dozen at...

[Poll] - are you mad that your new Tesla just missed Autopilot 2.0?

I wonder how they deal with revenue recognition? In general, you can't legally recognize revenue until all promised features are delivered. Full autonomy is a pretty huge promise, and clearly not close to done -- otherwise the 2.0 feature set wouldn't begin life as a regression from 1.0.

    The last straw

Now that the new AP suite has been announced, I have a theory. Maybe they had to change the body tooling just slightly to create openings for the cameras, so they were building the final cars of Q3 with all remaining inventory parts, some of which were damaged during production and had to be...

    Defective windshield on new P100D

It didn't. When I sent it back to the factory, they did a clay bar cleaning of all the glass. This got most of it, but not all, and it made the panoramic roof hazy. This was the second P100D that had no end of problems, so I just told them I wanted a refund and to get my old car back. I get...

Which candidate is better for Tesla?

Think of it this way: no matter who wins, at least one truly awful person will be kept out of the White House.

Which candidate is better for Tesla?

The available evidence suggests that Hillary is more likely to make that mistake. Trump wants to team up with Russia to fight ISIS. That sounds like a plan. Clinton wants to team up with ISIS to fight Russia. That sounds like suicide. I'm oversimplifying Clinton's position -- she wants to...

Nav 8.0 - UI not made for driving

Tesla is going through the same thing Apple did with the iPhone, but at about 1/10 the speed because cars are more complex than phones: (1) Tesla introduces revolutionary electric car -- not the first electric, but the first really good electric. The iPhone moment. (2) Tesla promises apps but...

Word "Autopilot": To ban or not to ban?

Since Elon appreciates a good cultural reference, I suggest they call it "the technology formerly known as Autopilot, which is now represented by a blue and white steering wheel symbol." In media which cannot conveniently render the symbol, it will simply be called "the technology."

Will current autopilot cars be able to upgrade to 2.0?

Yes. In other news, politicians lie and there's no such thing as Santa Claus. A colleague once (accurately) described an industry conference a place where competitors get together and discuss trade secret.

Which candidate is better for Tesla?

The one unfortunate, but inevitable, side effect is that some taxi drivers are getting hosed by the breaking of their monopoly. Not because there's suddenly competition -- that they can handle. The problem is that, in NYC for example, the cost of a taxi medallion is $1.2 million. Many of them...

Things I like about V8 software

Agree, though they should have chosen something more distinctive -- there are other situations that use the identical chime sound. The best one I can think of would be an elevator bell -- garage door going up/down, like an elevator.

Yes, exactly. This new ICE regulation will inadvertently do more to help EV sales than any pro-EV initiative could hope to.
  38. F

Will current autopilot cars be able to upgrade to 2.0?

@Canuck, regarding my three mistakes: (1) True, they don't broadcast to all employees what's in the pipeline. But some employees are more resourceful than others. If this particular employee occasionally has lunch with the right engineers or marketing people, he'll learn stuff. Even Apple is...
  39. F

    Instant torque...

Well said. It's delayed response versus instant response. No contest. And ICE cars are actually getting worse. I just bought my wife a new Range Rover Autobiography with all the fixings, because we need a vehicle that can handle our new German Shepherd as well as trips to Tahoe. We of...

Will current autopilot cars be able to upgrade to 2.0?

One of the Tesla people I spoke to recently (over a dozen, so he/she can't get in trouble for me posting this) tipped his/her hand a bit. My best recollection of the conversation: FF: I hear on TMC that you're coming out with AP 2.0 hardware, and some cars may already have it. T: I read the...

Which candidate is better for Tesla?

This is American economic history in a nutshell: (1) Government creates obstacles to progress. (2) Private enterprise finds a way to overcome them. (3) Government takes credit. Unveiling on Oct 17th

This would certainly be fun: Tesla: We have a thing called Autopilot. Germany: You can't call it that. Tesla: Why not? Germany: It's not fully autonomous. Tesla: Surprise!

    The last straw

You may recall that Consumer Reports gave the Model S their highest car rating ever. Then, about a year later, they withdrew their recommendation entirely due to quality problems. At the time I hoped they were just overreacting, but combining CR with what I read here daily, I'm reluctantly...

    The last straw

Yes. I'm assuming no ill intent on his part, just the usual Tesla confusion and failure to execute. I haven't even had the same point of contact troughout this process -- I'm probably up to a dozen different Tesla employees by now. All very nice people, all wanting to make things right. Yet...
