Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Guys, I hope the mods will stand for one weekend off topic post. The quoted post below is from the “off topic galore” thread. If interested, please DO NOT reply here. Please go to that thread to reply. I appreciate advice from anyone interested.

Guys I need your advice. I assembled a 50hp electric pontoon boat with the idea to start a nascent market for electric boats. I also added solar panels on the upper deck, although if I were doing it again, I would skip this, but live and learn. Anyway, my challenge it’s one thing to assemble a...

Agree, and I’m just holding through the storm because it’s impossible to predict Tesla stock price short term. But if any company can survive a serious recession (if there will be one), it’s Tesla.

Have you seen pictures of Musk outside? He obviously doesn’t care too much about his appearance.

Both diesel and electric have their challenges. Once a base is set up, solar could be deployed to power vehicles. I would prefer to have optionality. Some diesel, some fully electric. Honestly probably more diesel, but I could see a potential advantage of having some of both. Toyota went EV...

Here’s the thing. It sounds like Toyota is getting serious and that’s good. However, actually implementing all that new technology is extremely hard work and expensive. If they are truly committed to it, they have the resources to pull it off. However, what we’ve seen from them so far is only...

You consider his comment snippy? No wonder Elon’s words offend you lol

Thank you!!! It’s as if people forget that Musk built this company out of sheer force of will, and are now giving him crap for wanting to have free will in what he wants to say…
  14. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

The company would not exist as it is without Elon being who he is. There are other pure EV companies to invest in if investing in EVs is your primary angle.

I feel like it typically goes in the opposite direction of what it does the 2 weeks prior to earnings. Meaning if it rises into earnings, it will generally fall afterwards. If it falls going into earnings, it will often rise afterwards. But obviously any surprises in the report override any...

Lol my comment was a joke. Happens every first Q that the bears claim the growth story is dead.

If you compare Q over Q, the Tesla growth story is clearly dead

I disagree. Everything Tesla said was always twisted against them. Meanwhile, the vacuum is getting filled with Tesla products sold to willing and happy buyers.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Sales sure, but at what margin? For most of the post 2008 period, oil prices were low and the Priuses were priced accordingly.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

No you have it backwards. Treasury executes the legislature’s statutes. (Yes, the executive branch also provides guidance prior to a law being passed, but what is passed by the legislature IS the law, and the executive branch is supposed to follow it.)
  22. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Regardless of how impossible the statutes are to implement, treasury is on thin ICE interpreting the legislation in a manner that is arguably materially different than what was voted.

Toyota will at best be a small shell of its current size, if it survives at all. I say this as a former long time Toyota fan.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I wonder if the Prius through Toyota off the right track in the sense that with the possible exception of the years 2005 - 2008, I don’t think they were ever in high demand or very profitable. Maybe they thought pure BEVs would also be low margin… If Toyota produced them, they might have been…

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

This is nonsense. Investment in capital items like plants and equipment do not hit the profit and loss statement directly (only through depreciation and COGS) and therefore do not generate a significant direct accounting loss. So if they are showing a $2+ billion loss, than that really is a $2+...

The numbers always get bigger but also another year out lol Edit: But I do think Ford has the best strategy of Legacy, if they can survive the valley of EV production hell.
  28. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

You are absolutely correct that a price war is an incorrect label, in that it implies that the competition was eating Tesla’s lunch, whereas in reality increased production by Tesla and a massive increase in interest rates were the primary factors driving Tesla’s price reductions. They were in...

I would argue it should have been easier for Rivian. They had plenty of pre orders and it was easy to raise investor dollars. Unfortunately they lack financial discipline as well as engineering prowess (the cars are great, but they lack the engineering prowess to build them at scale).

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Some of the roadsters almost certainly we’re sold at negative gross margin. But Elon pulled out the whip along with his brains and things turned around fairly rapidly.
  31. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I don’t think price increases should invalidate a bet any more than further price decreases would have. That being said, I’m not sure if you have much in the way of recourse beyond exposing him, as you have already done.

A little early to say growth is in the bag, don’t you think? I have no idea what’s going to happen. I think growth is more likely, but recession still well within the realm of possibility.
  34. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Not true. If you can sell enough to create capitulation, you can buy a much larger % of the company for every $ spent. However, very unlikely to pull off with a company of Tesla’s size.
  35. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

This is a misunderstanding of how market cap is calculated. To get to $6 trillion market cap, you only need technically 1 share to sell at a price that when extrapolated, values the company at $6 trillion. That’s why market cap in general is somewhat of a misnomer. Because only a % of shares are...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Your main point was still wrong though. 85 came long before the 60. The context is new models. The fact the plaid eventually came out later does not change the fact that the S came out with longer range, highest specced version first at the time of introduction.

Or it’s entirely possible to just keep ramping up. MMs can buy shares if needed to cover those naked calls.
  38. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

But don’t ignore the nearly 10,000 put options at $160. MMs wouldn’t complain too bad if they just had to buy shares as they move through the $150 wall, if they can screw all those put holders at $160. My guess is that we get close to $160 today, but then move back down close to $150 by tomorrow.

Can you imagine being one of the few who rode tesla correctly both directions? Citadel I assume? I’m the dummy who missed both (sold feb 2020 after 6 years of hodling due to fear of covid. Planned to get back in but it just kept running away from me. Made some money on options but nothing...

Ford has the drag of a high debt load, but I think Farley is going to do his best to push them into the electric future. It’s a tough road, but at least he’s making a very legitimate attempt.
  41. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

This is a FAR better use of the funds then a buy back. FAR, FAR better for long term shareholder value
  42. T

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

But if you’re a used car dealer that paid near MSRP in mid to late 2022, you’ve just lost more like $20,000 per car. So 20 cars would be more like $400,000 loss.

Long wait times for Service (Tesla + other)

Oh my gosh the incompetence of Tesla service is a wonder to behold. 1st as stated above they said it was the drive unit. Made an appointment to come back 4 weeks later and said it would take 3 days to fix. I bring to appointment. 3 days later they extend to 10 days. 10 days go by... 3 weeks go...

Long wait times for Service (Tesla + other)

The older model S drive units are known to develop a “milling” noise that gets worse over time. I don’t know what it sounds like, but the sound my car is making is what I expect it would sound like. It sounds similar to a bad wheel bearing except directly behind me. It’s possible it is a bad...

Long wait times for Service (Tesla + other)

I would have settled for reliable info about where the car was in the process of being fixed rather than being kept entirely in the dark. That said, I went in yesterday and got all the info I wanted. Not sure why I had to drive 50 miles to get a few questions answered, but it is what it is. At...

Selling my Model S as soon as comes back from service

Got to come a bit to Tesla’s defense after all my complaining. I went into the SC today and they were able to confirm the parts were there and that my car was 3rd in line to be fixed. Seemed real too because my car was parked right in front of the garage entrance and I don’t think it was there...

Selling my Model S as soon as comes back from service

2015 Model S 75k miles. I will give them credit for being willing to change the drive unit just based on the noise it was making, but the lack of transparency around how long it will take is very frustrating. I don’t see why they don’t let me drive the car until the part is there and then I...

Long wait times for Service (Tesla + other)

Service is really frustrating. I’m getting my rear drive unit on 2015 model S replaced under warranty and after waiting a month to drop it off, it’s just been sitting there for 3 weeks with no specific info from service center as to when it might be done. No loaner and Uber credits worthless...

Selling my Model S as soon as comes back from service

My car has been in service for 3 weeks for an originally estimated 3 day drive unit replacement. No updated estimate and no info from service center. They respond to my questions but without giving the least hint of what is actually going on or when they might get my car back to me. Getting very...
