G'day, all!
Tesla owners from Los Angeles looking to rent Model 3 LR for our first stay in Australia. Two weeks or so near the start of summer holidays.
Have used Turo in the States but don't know best approach in NSW. Experienced with RHD in New Zed, UK, etc.
Any suggestions would be...
My wife’s 3LR RWD.
18-inch aeros ... but aero covers forgotten at home.
74 mph most of the way. Temps in the 70s leaving LA, near 100 across the Mojave and up the Owens Valley, then about 70 upon arrival in Mammoth.
Normal burn for this car at that temp and speed is about 250 Wh/mile or...
Arrived at 20%. Ramped up quickly to 147 kW and kept edging up thereafter. Held 150 kW until about 45%.
At that point, headed off to our condo ... and 120V charging at 4 mph ...
(My wife’s 3LR RWD)
We've had four years of great experience with Teslas in the snow and ice, including last year with a RWD model 3.
However, there's a difference between winter and winter. After a day cruise up to local snow and ice, a four-day President's Weekend trip to the High Sierra provided a perfect...
Headed up to the mountains for Presidents' Day but leery of the snow chain hassle?
Or, confident that your Tesla's AWD will get you past Caltrans chain control points, but need to show CHP that you're "carrying chains."
Enter, the AutoSock. A California-approved traction device, but without...

Last weekend, opportunity presented itself.
Both my wife and I would be doing the same drive at the same time. She, in her 3LR, me in my P3D.
So, I arranged to follow her and match speed (helped by AP).
The experiment was not perfectly controlled:
As the tail car, the P3D benefitted from...
One of the great things about an AWD Tesla is that, shod in all-seasons, it will get you through most CHP chain control points.
However, if Level 3 controls are in effect, you'll need chains. And, for L1 and L2 controls, you're supposed to have chains on board.
Trouble is, chains -- even...
A disturbing data point to share here. (And, for calibration purposes, I'm a fervent Tesla and Model 3 fan.)
Here in the San Fernando Valley (LA area, CA), we're lucky to have a premier PPF and coatings wizard, Anthony Alvarado. He's corrected and coated our 2015 Model S, our 2017 Model 3...

If your travels may take you away from Supercharging, or if you simply need home/family/friend charging connections other than the 5-15 (120V) and 14-50 (240V) adapters that came with your Model S or X, these will make you a road warrior.
Like-new condition.

Many of us work hard to justify/rationalize the $$$ we spend on fast cars.
Recently, it’s felt great to feel the truth behind the rationalizations. I’ve been up on the California Central Coast, driving a number of epic two-laners. On these roads, passing safety has depended upon rapid...
Went dual motor for skiing and handling, but was disappointed about having to give up 8% range (308 vs. 334 on EPA testing cycle).
Several TMC posters, though, cautioned not to worry too much too soon. They pointed out that EPA testing is dyno only, with no way to adjust for aero effects...
Huge difference!
A positive one ... at least for smaller drivers who like curvy roads. Side bolstering appears to be close to two inches tighter.
My wife and I love that. YMMV.
Also seems to be more plushly cushioned, with a more buttery feel to the pleather ...
From the start, I’ve loved Model 3’s unique venture system.
However, I did wonder whether the AC could keep up in true hot weather.
Our experience in recent 105-degree-plus temps cured that worry.
The system handled it like a champ. In fact, the ability to blow air directly through the...
Doesn’t ge any better than this.
Acceleration is absurd ... even uphill. What seemed like three seconds of right foot left my wife woozy ... and the speedo at 70. Immediate response inspires enormous confidence when circumstances require a quick pass. A+ ... and a total blast.
Regular RWD...
Woke up psyched and did a quick Sepulveda/Mulholland lap.
Power is stellar.
Handling is amazing, too ... for folks like me. Real performance/track aficionados will probably want the Performance Upgrade Package ... and perhaps different rubber than Tesla supplies.
Ride is very good ... about...
[Repost from yesterday, to pull together photos and description neatly. Was rushed yesterday when informed that Model 3 would arrive in two days, not two months. With that in mind, I will consider reasonable offers!] :)

Good news came so fast yesterday that it could have been a problem. The P3 ... which I'd been planning to probably change into a regular AWD ... in the weeks I'd been assured I still had ... was suddenly the P3 that I could pick up at Marina del Rey tomorrow.
Yes!
Nooooooo ...
What to do...
Just returned from what was apparently the first P3 test drive at Topanga. Had the chance to make it a thorough one.
Won't attempt to provide a general M3 review -- there are thousands out there -- but merely my impression of the driving difference between LR and P.
Only one word...

We are a joyously two-Tesla family: S85D and 3LR.
Trying to decide among three options, once we’re able to turn our second Model 3 reservation into an AWD:
Two Model 3s. Zero-cost trade of S85D —> 3LRD. Long-distance road trips = tightly packing.
3LRD + S100D. Cost = $50K. Gives us...
Reminded of this afresh driving up the Eastern Sierra yesterday to Mammoth.
Swallowed all of our stuff, including golf clubs and skis quite nicely (albeit not as effortlessly as an S). Accommodated a full-size carry-on in the frunk.
Fast and flawless. Autopilot perfect. Averaged 280 kWh/mi...
Got our Model 3 in late December.
Since then, despite eyes keenly peeled, I've seen exactly three others on the road, and that's here in Southern California, where they're supposed to be everywhere.
Then, after seeing three in three months, I saw three within three miles while driving Angeles...
Tesla’s 2170 batteries are new in Model 3.
A previous new-generation battery, with new anode chemistry in the S90D, experienced widespread early degradation.
Just wondering what people’s experiences several months in with the Model 3 have been?
FWIW, our 80% charge has stayed consistently...
My wife and I have had our Model 3 since Christmastime, and we've good advantage of the opportunity to trade back and forth day to day between it and our S85D.
In doing so, we've reached the usual conclusions:
S = smoother, with slightly less intrusive road feel and wind noise
3 = more nimble...
Even five or ten degrees (a la Model S) would make routing details and street names on far right of display much more readable by driver.
With existing hardware already designed and sourced, I'm not certain how hard this would be to implement. A simple shim? A simple shim installation?
I'm...
Right now, the prime left-hand third of the screen is devoted to speedo, odo, AP, and a limited number of "cards."
This squeezes the map and pushes it away from driver's easy vision. Ditto music.
Increasing the variety of cards (Tweak #1) could help.
Other possibilities:
Make one "card"...
When landing a plane, nothing is more useless than runway behind you.
And, on a smal (compared to MS/MX) map, nothing is more useless than map display of road behind you. Having the "current location" bug in the middle of the map wastes half of it.
In navigation route mode, the Model 3...
Assuming that it would be difficult to add an S/X style twist to the already-designed shift/AP stalk (best solution), here's next best:
Use the AP "toy car" portion of the display:
Tap anywhere on front of car or above car to decrease following distance.
Tap anywhere on back of car or behind...
Going from four stalks to two was an improvement. Using the gear selector for AP was a master stroke; there's virtually never a time when one must use shifter and AP.
However, inability to adjust speed via stalk is a big step backward. And, using upward movement to turn off AP can lead to...
With space on the single screen at a premium, offering additional cards could ease the crunch.
For instance:
Nav list (scrollable)
"Now Playing" (song, controls, album art ... without taking up map territory)
Model 3 is a tremendous car. For many folks, it seems the only frustration is that UI gripes seem so easily fixable, but it's hard to know if the great suggestions which TMC members offer on these forums are being read and considered by the good folks at Tesla.
With that in mind, I will offer...
It's been a rainless "rainy season" here in SoCal, so, after two-plus months of ownership, today was my first real experience in using the wipers.
The surprise? No real gripe with the UI.
Pulled out into the rain and the wipers came on.
When rain lightened up and I found auto-wipe a bit...
Just added a M3 and became a two Tesla family.
We had planned to add a second HPWC, having the two load-share our 100A circuit. Would be convenient: Come home, plug in, and forget. It would be nice to have a spare HPWC if one went down ... which has happened to us in the past. And, local...
Love my wife. Want to keep her around a while.
Tried to talk her into an S, like mine. Probably the safest non-SUV out there. She opted instead for the 3, said she wanted something smaller, easier to park, etc. Couldn't be talked out of it.
Trouble is, I've now driven her 3 ... a lot (my...
Yes!!
For the first month we had our Model 3, we practically had to wrench the steering wheel to make the AP nag go away. Half the time, we ended up canceling autopilot by mistake.
With 50.12, the gentlest of holds now works, same as on Model S. Ten times better!
I'm impressed with how...
We know that Tesla-reduced range is 310 and 335, respectively. Actual EPA-tested was 334 and 344.
And, with early favorable indications of 3LR efficiency — especially with Aero 18s — there’s reason to suspect that the real-world range of the cars is fairly close, rather than 25 miles apart...
”Car Needs Service”
Reboot does not clear.
Tesla Service Central saw message but could not see any faults.
Car drove just fine.
BTW, scheduled charging and reduced backup camera contrast are welcome improvements. HD radio still a work in progress ...
Have a Midnight Silver S85D. Looks good.
However, my wife’s new Multi-Coat Red looks spectacular.
I’m seriously thinking about going that route when my M3 configurator activates the AWD option.
Would first love to see Midnight Silver in the wild on a 3, though (especially as she’s leery of...
53 miles Sherman Oaks to Mt. Waterman (+6000 ft) = 22 kWh
53 miles Mt. Waterman to Sherman Oaks (-6000 ft) = 2 kWh
Implies 53 miles flat would be about 12 kWh
Implies roughly 10 kWh to gain 6000 ft = Roughly 1.67 kWh per 1000 ft
Overall energy use was 227 Wh/mi ... or roughly 4.5 mi/Wh...
Yes, you can fit two golf bags.
You don't even have to pull out the drivers first.
However, the fit is fairly tight. The trick is to insert the club end of each bag first ... into the small cut-out space at the left rear of the trunk (very similar to the space in a Model S). The bag will...
In a spirit of pure scientific inquiry -- no hedonic pleasure, us -- we took our M3 up into the local mountains yesterday. Our route:
Sherman Oaks (San Fernando Valley) up to Mt. Waterman (San Gabriel Mountains) and back.
53 miles each way.
Elevation 900 feet --> 7000 and back.
Mix of...
With EPA testing showing combined cycle range of 335, I've wondered how Tesla handled its down-rate to 310. Three possibilities came to mind:
Hide the "top" of the battery, calling 93% "100%" ... thereby reducing degradation risk from range charging.
Hide the "bottom" of the battery, calling...
