CA drivers using PG&E's EV rates?

Local energy storage is great, but still quite expensive (long ROI, unless you have a ton of outages, IMO). As long as you PV generation covers your peak needs, and off-peak rates are reasonable for charging EV at night, you are essentially able to use the grid as the storage system.

Tesla Wall Charger or Nema 14-50?

Can you give more info on your potential setup? Is the potential charging spot in a completely exposed and publically accessible place, more private? Wall connector seem to make sense more for outdoors setup, but there are options for securing your UMC on the exterior as well.

CA drivers using PG&E's EV rates?

I think it's a relatively common knowledge that you don't want to always charge your car with fast charging, as it ultimately affects the longevity of your battery. I would definitely recommend considering home base changing, as it's by far the most convenient way to charge your EV. I dunno if...

    Staying below 100%

You are basically using your own green energy, as long as you generate enough for your needs with your PV system. Not sure why it matters where it stored prior to you consuming it. If you want to be completely self-powered, one PW is likely insufficient.

    # of Powerwall 2's

I have a similarly sized PV system (5.85kw), 1 PW, Model S. One PW is sufficient (as a backup system) for our needs based on the number of circuits being backed up by PW. I would go with one PW, but it depends on your home needs and how much you want to be in the "self-powered" mode. I don't...

How to set scheduled charge to maximize saving?

What he said ^ :) Chances are you will not need to worry about charging past 7AM, but if there are few of those occasions, you can set your charge level a bit lower potentially to make sure you don't charge past the end of low nightly rate. But if you want 100% guarantee, there are EVSEs out...

Mini Solar Charger System to just Charge my Tesla S75D

Hmm, sure, I read that, but the primary listed OP goal was to cover 20 - 30 mile commute needs and backup was the secondary.

Travel Times on MS cars vs ICE cars

There is no point in sugar coating it, it takes longer in EV on most long-distance trips that require charging vs ICE cars. I would recommend a few things to consider (it may or may not put your mind at ease): - How frequently you take such trips? Statistically, ppl take only a few such trips...

Mini Solar Charger System to just Charge my Tesla S75D

Not positive what the motivation here is... Cost savings? Your commute costs you around $1 - $1.3 in electricity per day. Makes little sense from cost-saving perspective IF system used only going to cover your charging needs. Having PV and PowerWall combo is more about self-powering your...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Tesla claimed it was PG&E slowness with our project, but who really knows... PG&E did simplify the final approval process to some degree, which allowed my project to move forward. I did complain to Tesla though, and they sent me a check (did not ask for it!) for one loan payment of my system...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

I'm also up for CleanPowerSF rebate, but don't even know if I want to ask Tesla the status again on that, as they have been extremely slow to respond on most communications. The sales person (sorry, energy advisor, was super quick...before the sale :)

Oh, then I'm in the similar boat, I guess... Signed contract early Nov '17.

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Nope... they are not that good at outgoing communications (have to ping them about everything). I was hoping to make step 2, but now dunno, and will be happy to be a part of step 3 at this point... Did get a reply today from "district energy partner" contact about self-referral though, and I did...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Thanks, everyone for your replies! It all makes sense, I just wish Tesla would outline the functionality better during the pre-sales and design process. I'm a "Tesla cool-aid drinker", so it's easier for me to overlook some of the rough edges in the process/with these new products and, at times...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

It was suggested earlier as well in this thread, so I've bumped up the reserve to 50% from initial 30%. I know what it does, so it's not exactly what I had in mind. I guess it is what it is for now until Tesla opens up more advanced settings.

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Well, it actually does make a difference to me, as rates are different at night and in the morning when we would use the powerall to feed the house electrical needs, until there is enough PV energy (on cloudy days it could be a while). In addition, I was planning on moving more loads to the...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Ok, thanks for the feedback... I hope Tesla can sort this out with future FW updates, as if the system works as intended, that is not what they sold me initially. And really don't know how useful such self-powered setup can be for anyone with an EV that is not on a separate meter as the house...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

I took that pic before all boxes were labeled by the installers... The main panel should be wired to bypass powerwall, based on the original design (that was the main purpose of having these circuits in a separate panel). The main panel is on the left in the pic, at this point it contains the 3...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Very recently got my 5.85Kw PV system + Powerwall2 activated in San Francisco, CA, so wanted to share my experience and ask a few questions. The entire system was designed/installed by Tesla. I think I've initially engaged them probably in Aug 2017, signed contract in Nov. System was installed...

    Employer provided charging stations

There are 8 EVSE (6kw) stations @ my garage at work (16 spots near them marked as EV charging only). Multiple 14-50 on one run

Here is an idea: - Run a single 14-50R inside the garage - Run an extension to outside with a 14-50P to 14-50R (weatherproofed box can be used to house the receptacle) - Unplug extension when charging inside - Plug it in when outside setup is needed Good luck!

    Home Charging Setup

Yeah, so with Tesla wall connector installed even on 20Amp circuit and pulling ~10-11mi/hr, you will easily recharge nightly (assuming your car is parked for 8-9hrs at night. Even if you miss a night, there is still plenty of back up charge in the battery. I would not overthink it at this...

    Home Charging Setup

My $.02 on the topic. In the ideal world, the advice of upgrading service is a sound one, but in reality, you can probably get by without upgrading your service. Just discuss with electrician the largest possible circuit he/she can pull (probably from the main, as it seems to have better...

    Supercharging pain in rear

Dunno about closing this location, as while it's possible to avoid it, it is in the key point when traveling up/down Interstate 5. Needs to be fixed and Service Center cars should not be charging there (I'm sure they can add more L2 charging at the facility for that). I did not see an answer...

Wall connector is a hardwired device, but it can be equipped with the plug, which is what OP needed, as he was looking to easily move the WC in the future. I think you answered your own question #2. 16Amp continues load would be on a 20Amp circuit, 24Amp on 30Amp one. Don't have an answer to...

    Supercharging pain in rear

I recently did a SFO to Anaheim, CA (Disneyland) and back trip with the family. Yeah, Burbank is not very exciting stop indeed, and when I was there, there were at least 3 cars taking stalls that were clearly Service Center cars (stickers on windows). I'm surprised OP needed 2 hours to get...

    New Owner - Charger/Install Help

Do the wall connector IMO, save yourself some headache. Yes, it's $500/$550, but you can take it with you when you move, and installation of just the NEMA 14-30 or 14-50 outlet will still cost you, so the cost of wall connector install is not all net new. You can also have electrician wire wall...

2013 Volt to 2016 MS70 (pre face lift). Love MS! Don't miss much from the Volt days, especially trips to gas station and the need to run "engine maintenance" every month (if I managed to run in EV mode only) or GM dealership experience :)

Day 5 with my MS 70KW and feeling underwhelmed.

Just for your reference, I have a similar MS70 in terms of mileage. My 100% is 231 I think, last time I did 100%. 90% (daily) varies between 204 - 207. The Supercharger issue is indeed unpleasant, so I would call Tesla as it is happening next time, as it was suggested. Some folks BTW simply...

Day 5 with my MS 70KW and feeling underwhelmed.

"Reasonable driving" is a pretty subjective thing... Your posted wh/mile number suggests otherwise. Heavy foot has the same effect on EV or ICE. Try slowing down a bit for better range, or better yet, just don't worry about the little things and enjoy your car! Good luck!

An Update to our Supercharging Program

I don't think it's unfair to pay for what you use (hopefully Tesla will price this fairly. IMO anything over 20 - 25 cents per Kwh would not be very reasonable). KWh approach makes sense over "time of use" of course. I'm wondering if Tesla now going to factor this new development into the price...

    Advice on Home Charging Upgrade

CA drivers using PG&E's EV rates?

I use this plan, and as others mentioned, it's a decent way to get lower rate for car charging. It does require to be a bit more attentive to typical uses that fall to peak times. Often, those are easy to shift to off peak/weekend, but running A/C or other similar appliances might affect the...

advice needed on budgeting for solar panels, charging

Shouldn't your solar power generation offset this though? No A/C experience myself (no need for A/C in SFO), but I have a co-worker (lives in Dublin, CA) with Leaf, 4.7Kw solar system and wife's home biz. He is quite happy with his system and has considerable excess power generated each month.

HPWC vs. others + questions (new S60D owner)

Congrats on your Model S! Other cars will not be able to use NEMA 14-50, or at least I don't know of any EVs that can use that plug with the included EVSE. I would stick with wall connector if you thinking about EVSE or just use your UMC for daily charging combined with NEMA 14-50. If you...
