Arguing Machines: Tesla Autopilot vs Neural Network

Here's our video of the arguing machines concept applied to Tesla Autopilot "arguing" with an end-to-end neural network. Disagreement is used to predict challenging situations. It's a simple but powerful method for human supervision of black box AI systems: Paper is available here...

New podcast on Artificial Intelligence from MIT

I'm starting a new podcast on AI simply called "Artificial Intelligence". It'll include accessible, big-picture conversations (at MIT and beyond) on the nature of intelligence. Some big names and brilliant minds coming up in the fall. I'm posting it on TMC because there will be some people from...

Anyone driving cross country from Boston to California?

Thanks for the offers. I'm mostly looking for September trips from Boston to Fremont. It's the route that we have another vehicle ready to travel, and so validation data along that route is what's needed.

Anyone driving cross country from Boston to California?

We're a group of MIT researchers looking for a person who is driving their car (preferably Tesla) from Boston to California (preferably Fremont, CA). We would like to add a dashcam to your car to record the forward roadway and will pay for it. Payment amount is negotiable. This will help our...

Updated Tesla vehicle deliveries visualization (based on 2018-Q2 report)

Here's the updated visualization of Tesla vehicle deliveries based on Tesla's Q2 delivery report. For details, see blog post: Tesla Vehicle Deliveries and Projections | MIT Human-Centered AI

Tesla Autopilot miles estimated at over 1.2 billion

I assumed that the ration of AP2 cars with EAP is the same as AP1 cars with AP. It's the most reasonable assumption given the lack of data on this point.

Tesla Autopilot miles estimated at over 1.2 billion

Tesla Autopilot has driven over 1.2 billion miles (estimated). See visualization sand details in blog post: Tesla Autopilot Miles | MIT Human-Centered AI This is a remarkable accomplishment in the history of applied AI research, development, and deployment.

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

Great questions! I especially like the last one. If not in this survey, I'll add in future versions.

Visualization of Tesla Vehicle Deliveries: Past, Present, and Future

I was looking to establish a strong lowerbound that while not guaranteed is very likely achievable. Everything else is speculation I like to stay out of for the purpose of the research I'm doing.

Visualization of Tesla Vehicle Deliveries: Past, Present, and Future

I updated the visualization of Tesla deliveries (past and future) to include projections based on production levels of 3,500 vehicles a week and 5,000 vehicles a week. Latter will lead to 1 million total by November 8, 2020.

Visualization of Tesla Vehicle Deliveries: Past, Present, and Future

I made a visualization of Tesla vehicle deliveries from 2008 to today, and projecting out to 2020. If ramp up continues, total should hit 1 million vehicles by Nov 20, 2019. Plus, the following is a plot showing the total number of delivered vehicles, segmented by Autopilot hardware...

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

I've added two new questions on the topic of HCI: How useful do you find the visual display of what Autopilot sees (lane markings, other cars) on the instrument cluster (Model S/X) or center display (Model 3)? How useful do you find the sound (audio signal) you hear when Autopilot is turned on...

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

Wow, thank you for the kind words. I am often surprised how quick people are to formulate survey questions about technologies they don't fully understand or have personally experienced extensively. Each of the questions asked here have a lot of data behind them, and will help uncover further...

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

Nope, you're good (unless you really want to). For now all additions have been minor, and don't invalidate previous survey responses.

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

Based on the great suggestions, I made some (backward compatible) updates to the survey: - Included kilometers along with miles. - Added J.D. to list of example professional degrees. - Added a question "Since you first started using Autopilot, how has the performance of Autopilot changed with...

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

You full comment is great. Very insightful. Just to quickly respond to one of the suggestions quoted above. On the TACC front, you're right. The focus of the survey is on Autopilot (TACC + Autosteer) not TACC alone but it's important to clarify that. I added questions about TACC usage and also...

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

This is great thanks. I added some more options but of the ones you listed I believe are already covered. Here's how I would align them. Actual options are in bold: Need to exit highway or turn at intersection Need to take off ramp. Lane change (manual) <-- new one added thanks to your...

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

We instrumented 21 Teslas (and growing) for 1 to 2+ years of video recording in each car. Watch the video in the first post for details. Tesla doesn't have this kind of data, because it's not just the external scene, but also two HD cameras on the driver face and driver body.

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

No, that is the conventional thinking. I never said this. If I found results that confirmed this, I wouldn't say the findings are exciting. The results we found is very interesting and counter-intuitive. Stay tuned for their release. I am passionate about saving lives and sometimes that may...

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

We have been hard at work for the last 2+ years to run exactly such a study, and I believe we found some new, profound results. Every system is different. You can't just say that human beings are flawed so there's no way to build a successful collaboration between human and machine. It's hard...

    Tesla Autopilot Survey (from MIT)

My name is Lex Fridman. I'm leading an effort at MIT aimed at analyzing human behavior with respect to Autopilot by using computer vision to analyze 300,000+ miles and billions of video frames of real-world driving that we collect in Tesla vehicles. We're finding some very interesting and...

Coast-to-coast offer for Elon Musk from MIT

Actually, I agree with @Bladerskb and @BinaryField. I just tend to prefer to focus discussion on the positive aspects (the successes) of innovation, while quietly studying and learning from the negative (the mistakes). I don't know if Elon's public words on Autopilot and AI in general is the...

Coast-to-coast offer for Elon Musk from MIT

If you bought FSD, you've done an important thing on many levels for the advancement of safety. It sends a signal to Tesla and to engineers such as myself that you care and are willing to put your money behind the idea that artificial intelligence can help make driving safer and more enjoyable...

Coast-to-coast offer for Elon Musk from MIT

Yes, Lex Fridman here. Thanks for the kinds words on the lectures. I can't (or shouldn't) comment on the current Tesla approach, because I both know too much and too little. All I can say is that they have an amazing team. I love seeing good engineering and aggressive innovation (of course...

    Autopilot thoughts

This is such a fascinating conversation for a researcher like me. We're collecting huge amount of data on real-world Tesla use. And I'm trying to find if there exists a sweet spot to the balance between allowing the driver to relax and allowing the driver to be inattentive.

AutoPilot - note to drivers and Consumer Reports

The OP summary of how Autopilot is ought to be used and why using it is enjoyable is really good. Our work with large scale naturalistic data at MIT confirms a lot of his anecdotal findings.

Need ideas on how to prove you're a Tesla owner or regular driver?

True. Perhaps you could message me ideas privately or email [email protected] But honestly, a good idea we'll be one that is too annoying to fake even when you know about it. Basically, I'm interested in catching most but not all no-owners claiming to be owners.

Need ideas on how to prove you're a Tesla owner or regular driver?

I'm running a survey that is asking people about their experience with Autopilot. What kind of questions could I ask people to prove that they in fact own a Tesla or drive one regularly? I wouldn't want people to provide their view on Autopilot unless they've actually experienced it extensively...
