Electric Pickup Roundup: Musk Says Tesla Truck 'Not Like Anything Else'

Then there would be no need for those wide, obliquely slanted "lapels" on either side of the large central slab, nor any need to taper the "lapels" in the direction away from the "camera". In fact, with the geometry you suggest, the taper should be reversed, with the "lapel" coming to a point at...

Electric Pickup Roundup: Musk Says Tesla Truck 'Not Like Anything Else'

Well, I agree with those who say it's a Rorschach test. Elon has been very successful at creating a murky image into which we are projecting our imagination! :) Regarding the "white light bar", a few points: 1. There's no way that the light strip can be representative of headlights, as some...

Electric Pickup Roundup: Musk Says Tesla Truck 'Not Like Anything Else'

Tesla is gonna put the "T" logo sideways at the edge of the windshield? Unlikely. Alternative hypothesis: The "gigantic hood" is actually the rear of the pickup, with a cover over the bed (to reduce aero drag). The "T" logo is on the back end of the cover. The light strip is a running light...

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Sad to say I felt the same way. Maybe I've seen too many Tesla "reveal" events, or maybe some of Elon's enthusiasm has evaporated. The tone of the event was more like "This is the latest version of the Model 3" instead of "Here is OUR NEW MODEL!!"

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Thank you for the correction. I took "feature complete" to mean actual full self-driving -- which is what "FSD" literally means -- in production cars. But perhaps Elon meant it in a much more restricted way.

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

I don't know; I don't claim to be a "car guy". And as a Tesla fan, I'll be quite happy if I'm wrong on this point. :)

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Yes, I'm pretty confident that Tesla won't make the same mistakes that they did with putting the Model 3 into production. And let's hope they won't come up with an entirely new set of mistakes. ;) Seriously, I expect the ramp up in Model Y production to go much, much more smoothly. I was afraid...

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Pretty sure Elon said fully functional FSD would be available by the end of the year. As someone said upstream... that seems all too similar to a promise from a couple of years back. Just my opinion, but if FSD means Level 4/5 autonomy, then Tesla is years away from that. And again just my...

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

I agree that the great similarity between the TM3 and the TMY means not much market separation. So I expect Model Y sales will heavily cannibalize impact Model 3 sales... once the TMY actually goes on sale, which won't be for (probably) over a year.

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

I expected that aftermarket replacement wheel covers for the Model 3, which would sacrifice just a tiny bit of increase in drag for much better appearance, would be pretty popular. But so far I haven't seen any report of anyone selling those. And yeah, that's something that Tesla really ought...

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Seems like American auto makers these days are calling any car that's not a sedan an SUV. (Ford even said "We're not making any more cars!") Personally I'd call the Model Y a lifted hatchback. But I guess I'm a heretic. ;)

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

About 3/4 of the way thru the presentation it occurred to me to click on the "YouTube" link and check at that site to see if a better resolution was available. Sure enough, the 720p was much, much better... the next up (1020p?) had occasional buffering issues. But deep blue was the wrong color...

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Hmmm, doesn't Tesla Autopilot+AutoSteer limit you to 5 MPH over the posted speed limit? But you're wrong about nobody doing that. At least from what's been reported, the self-driving Taxis that Waymo is now using in a Phoenix suburb stick strictly to the posted speed limit.

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

One thing that has always attracted me to Tesla is how they do NOT make meaningless style changes just for the sake of change. Most of the complaints about the Model 3 were that (a) it's a sedan with a normal trunk, not a rear hatch; (b) lack of head room in the rear seat, and (c) lack of a tow...

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Well, we'll have to wait for third party reports... hopefully we'll see some of those within 24 hours, if Elon lets people actually sit in the car. But yeah, I don't see how they can cram 3 rows of seats in there without it being pretty cramped. Hopefully Tesla will offer seating options as...

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Yeah. At least Elon was well rested this time, but it would have been nice if he'd spent much, much more time talking about the new car, and a lot less rehashing Tesla's history. I presume the Model Y does have a rear hatch; why wasn't that shown off?

I, too, was hoping for an "extra" surprise. Looks like that's not happening.

Model Y unveiling event 2019-03-14 (official thread)

Yes, during a high-profile presentation, he does always talk that way. He stutters less during a more casual conversation. I sympathize; I used to have massive stage fright.

Yeah, I was wrong when I predicted only 2 rows of seats.

Elon needs to take a page from the Pope, and tell people that being at a live event should be for the experience, not for recording it on their cell phone.

Resolution is quite bad for me. I expanded my window to fill the screen, and decided to shrink it back down.

An astronaut explains how it'd feel to ride Elon Musk's giant spaceship

Ah, thank you for the correction. Obviously it has been too many decades since I read about the Apollo space program! Well no, the Space Shuttle didn't pull that much G force at liftoff, altho from a bit of Googling I see where you likely got that incorrect figure. I suspect the person giving...

An astronaut explains how it'd feel to ride Elon Musk's giant spaceship

I very rarely post, but for once I know enough about a subject to contribute something. So, a few points: 1. At least a couple of people have mentioned this already, but the point seems to have been lost in all the comments: A 3G force, or even 5Gs, isn't going to be all that stressful for...

    Suspension Problem on Model S

The collective knowledge of TMC forum members vastly outshines a mere interested Tesla watcher like myself, so I rarely if ever have anything to add to discussions here, although I often read them with interest. But I felt compelled to register to advise y'all that "Dr ValueSeeker" has been...
