Euro crash tester says carmakers must return to physical controls - Impact on Australia?

Physical controls are objectively safer than touchscreen controls. They are more responsive and predictable, and you can operate them without looking at them.

Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA (Orders cancelled by Tesla May2023)

I made myself sad by accidentally going to the US site when checking to see if they M3P is out in Australia yet. I wish these were our options here.

    Supercharger - Macquarie Park, NSW

This is correct. The best thing to do with a ticket issued in a private carpark is to put it in the bin. If you read the fine print on the back you will find the words "this is not a fine" somewhere, it is basically a fee for an inspection service or however they choose to phrase it. Also, they...

    Cybertruck Waiting Room - Australia

The Cybertruck wasn't on the menu before the launch, and it was suddenly added on the US launch day. That might mean they are planning to launch it here eventually.

Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA (Orders cancelled by Tesla May2023)

That's quite a testimonial for the EQE, I will go have a look at one. I still would have preferred a new S, I will miss the convenience of superchargers and the touchscreen.

Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA (Orders cancelled by Tesla May2023)

Well, I'm a bit late to this news but it's hard to overstate my disappointment. I normally replace cars every 4 years, and have been holding on to my S for almost 7 years now, waiting for the new S. I don't see any alternative vehicle that matches the S. Damn!

Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA (Orders cancelled by Tesla May2023)

The MCU2 upgrade is by far the best money you'll ever spend. Makes the S a whole new car.

Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA (Orders cancelled by Tesla May2023)

I almost laughed, but actually you might be right. My extended family has almost entirely returned to their old-world countries over the past 20 years, and this sort of thing emphasises our isolation out here.

Describe your initial impressions upon new delivery of 2023 Model Y

My Model S is noticeable rougher when I use 45psi instead of 40psi.

I saw his interview with Bill Maher, he seems to be a lot more reasonable in person than his various tweets would suggest. The other thing to consider is that his type of thinking is more materialist (eg the physics of climate change) than emotional. He is certainly no genius in the emotional...

I am so ready for a new Model S, I test drove a M3P a few weeks ago. It was great, and I'm very tempted to get one, but I have been holding out for a new S for so long I just can't take the plunge. If we knew exactly how long it would be it would make life a lot easier. If it was 1 year I would...

    Supercharger - Gundagai NSW

I queued at Port Mac and Heatherbrae last week, as the only car in the queue and only for a few minutes. It's exacerbated by the slower charge speeds you get when you finally get a spot.
  14. Shock-On-T

Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA (Orders cancelled by Tesla May2023)

Not yet, but in some countries Tesla is allowing non-Teslas to use the SC network. It's probably their long-term plan to be a universal provider. Who knows when though.
  15. Shock-On-T

    Take delivery or cancel?

Yes, you should wait if resale value is the only consideration. In the future the resale value of a 2023 car will be higher than that of a 2022 car.

You said the price excludes LCT in the first post, then said the price includes LCT here. This is the source of the confusion, on road price always includes LCT. The price you quoted of $186,990 doesn't include paint or wheels either. Normally people talk about the drive-away price, especially...

    Model-Y Comprehensive Insurance Recommendation

I've used Comminsure for a while, but last year was $1600 and this year was $2800 for the renewal. Crazy? I shopped around and Budget Direct was $1000. It's a weird market.

The other providers are certainly getting better and better, but SC still the best in my opinion. Banks of up to 10 chargers in a site, real-time usage data, navigation awareness (routes via SC etc), reliability, no point-of-sale authentication or payment and so on.

Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA (Orders cancelled by Tesla May2023)

I agree with everything you're saying, but I just hope Tesla sees it that way and is reasonable with the pricing when the S finally arrives. I do think that SCs in Australia are a better experience than going to an Evie or NRMA CCS2 charger though.

I certainly hope it's less than that when it comes out here. Having said that, a friend of mine bought a Model X for >$300,000 before the big price cut a few years ago. He wasn't super happy when a few months later the price dropped to around $230,000, but it shows that some people will pay...

Refresh Model X & S Waiting Room - AUSTRALIA (Orders cancelled by Tesla May2023)

It's anyone's guess. Tesla does take into account exchange rates when pricing in Australia, and USD is about 20% higher vs AUD than about a year ago, so with the $6,000USD price rise would be around $240,000AUD at the old rate, at current rate $240,000*1.2= $288,000 AUD But that ignores pre-...

You are probably right that they won't maintain the old price, but to be fair the website says "Order" at every step of the process. You click "Order now" from the Model S page, then at the bottom of the configurator it says "Order your Model S", then the fee of $350 is called "Fully refundable...

I spoke with a guy at the Chatswood store, he seemed to think late 2023 they'd start arriving here. Apparently Fremont is all LHD nowadays, so they have to tool up Shanghai for the RHD S and X. I'd take all that info with a grain of salt though.

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

Agreed, that is the real problem. It barely drives behavour changes, just increases prices when people use power the most. The vast majority of people literally don't understand how they are billed for electricity. They don't know they are charged by the kWh. The don't know how much a kWh costs...

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

This can already be done. You can wire any load to CL2 so long as it is permanently connected (not switchable), and EV charging infrastructure is specifically named as allowable load. The car is downstream and irrelevant, the charger itself is always connected. Note that this means that the...

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

In these early stages the grid can usually soak up what renewables generate in real-time. As volatile renewables become a bigger and bigger part of the generating mix the storage will become more and more important, but even now generation capacity is a useful metric.

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

Amen to that, but I was replying to a guy in Nevada and wanted to give him a familiar point of reference. The point is even more applicable to Australia, our population has grown twice as fast as the US in the past 30 years and the grid has grown to meet the demand.
  33. Shock-On-T

Ev charging in the next 1-2 years

The population of the US has gone up 100,000,000 in the past 30 years. The grid coped with that. Humans are good at solving problems, don't worry it's gonna be fine.

    Tesla Model Y in Australia

There is also usually a pretty health market of Tesla owners swapping their wheels. I've bought and then sold 21s for my S in the past, so some Model Y LR buyers will want to buy your 21s off you.

It's not an investment, it is a product they are offering, then not delivering within a reasonable timeframe. I'm not expecting to make money on the thing. If I go to a hamburger shop and pay for a hamburger, and there's a sign saying "Our burgers are worth the wait, but they take a while" I...

Only in isolation. If something gets 2X while the competitors get 3X its value will fall, even though it's better. I suspect the value of FSD will fall in the long term. The hardware cost certainly will fall, and once the software is solved by more and more makers, and all FSD platforms become...

That's where we disagree. You think Full Self-Driving is a marketing term describing convenience features. I have always thought it to be a genuine representation that the car will be fully autonomous. We could run a poll if you like. When you paid $10,100 for Tesla's "Full Self-Driving" did...

It does look good. My main concerns are how long it will be and how quickly they will ramp production. Also, Tesla might be bad for panel gaps but they make a very good electric drive train. I'd have to guess better than Audi, but just a guess.

I think when you are offered (and pay for) a product called "Full Self Driving", even if there are plenty of caveats about timeframes, there is a reasonable expectation that sometime during your ownership of the vehicle it will be fully self-driving.
