Some exciting observations about the new Model S60 (software limited 75 kWh)

@Ingineer, I'm a Chem.E. not an EE, so I had to refresh much of my recollection of E&M and circuits. But I'm having a hard time understanding how the charging voltage can equate to the storage voltage of the battery modules (which is what you are using to determine the cell voltage, correct?) if...

    Hypermiling techniques?

I've had my S60D for about a week now. I"m still getting used to getting good efficiency when local driving (I only get to use it on weekends since I take the train to work), but I think I found a driving method that greatly improves efficiency at least on the highway. In particular, I've...

Some exciting observations about the new Model S60 (software limited 75 kWh)

Even easier, charge to full before a long trip and unlock. If your charge stays the same, then it's bottom limited. If it goes down to 80% then it's top limited. Anything else is a combination of the two. As for the combination situation, 90% of 75 kWh is 67.5 kWh. And 90% of 60 kWh is 54 kWh...

Some exciting observations about the new Model S60 (software limited 75 kWh)

See the posts on page 2 from privater: Some exciting observations about the new Model S60 (software limited 75 kWh) He has some charge date that only makes sense if the battery is top limited. Otherwise the car would be charging dangerously fast at the end, harming the battery and potentially...

Some exciting observations about the new Model S60 (software limited 75 kWh)

My understanding is that the LEAF is limited to discharge only 21.3 kWh. This is because discharging to true 0 would be very bad. VERY bad. I believe Something similar happens in the Teslas, but I can't find information on the exact number. Another thing I've seen in Tesla posts here is that...

Some exciting observations about the new Model S60 (software limited 75 kWh)

Sorry if it's already been said, but I thought I'd offer some practical advice. I live in north NJ. We just picked up our 60D this past weekend (yay!), but have owned a 2013 LEAF for the last 3+ years. We always charged the LEAF to 100%, and still have all 12 of the capacity bars. I'm guessing...

Some exciting observations about the new Model S60 (software limited 75 kWh)

Nice! Thanks for the data @privater! I'll have to go back and ask my delivery specialist, and might have to wait to ask one of their service technicians when I take delivery. Your conclusion is the most reasonable from the data. Otherwise the S60 would likely be charging harmfully fast towards...

    Hypermiling techniques?

Thanks again @WannabeOwner, I hadn't seen that thread. In case anyone is interested, I received different information than @privater from by Tesla delivery specialist yesterday about fully charging the S60. The short of it is that my delivery specialist said the S60 should still only be charged...

Some exciting observations about the new Model S60 (software limited 75 kWh)

@privater, I received different information than you about fully charging the new S60. I recently ordered an S60D (set to hit production first week of August). I asked my delivery specialist the same question about charging, and he said that the software limitation makes 15 kWh of the battery...

    Hypermiling techniques?

Thanks for your input @WannabeOwner ! I'm also unsure about rate of charge on the S60D since I don't completely understand how it charges with the software limitation. In this instance, I'm wondering if a full charge would be 30 minutes or less, since my Tesla rep confirmed that the car is...

    Hypermiling techniques?

Thank you all for your input! It's really helpful! I agree with all of you, and didn't realize that I was already accidentally taking into account @stevezzzz comments about coating to too-high speeds. I hate getting pulled over for speeding (takes you longer to reach your destination than if you...

    Hypermiling techniques?

Thanks @Jerry 33 and @hiroshiy! I typically use power to maintain 55 mph (coasting downhill to obtain increased speeds). Preheating in winter sounds like a given, since the car will be plugged in at that time. So it sounds like I might be able to make it in one shot if there's no snow (I forgot...

    Hypermiling techniques?

I have not done hard math (it's been too long since my engineering days), but David99 has the right of it from my experience. While wind resistance and rolling resistance (if I recall correctly) both increase with speed, I think it unlikely that the increased energy lost to these factors is...
