“Deep Rain” Windshield Wipers - Seattle Storm Edition

Absolutely deeprain is a major regression in Seattle small-droplet-type rain. The old NN worked extremely well (IMHO), but deeprain fails to activate more often than it succeeds. I'm hoping the raining data they gather from manual overrides will fix this issue (soon!).

Tinted Model X Windshield - Is Ghosting & Blurry Normal?

I did similar on my Model S, and ghosting is a problem. It is great for radiant heat reduction, but bad for clarity. Not sure I'd do it again. So far, I have found the MX standard tinting/filtering to be fine, and don't feel as much heat transmission. I wouldn't do it on a MX for sure.

Is there something wrong with my X?

Well, I'll just throw it out there that abetterrouteplanner uses >400 Wh/mile for a similar random route starting from Jacksonville, which I plotted. That's for 20" wheels. 22" will be easily 10% lower, so 440, and conditions or something very simple like under-inflated tires or driving faster...

Is there something wrong with my X?

The whole point is that I don't have to worry about consumption. I'm on EAP essentially 100% of the time (local and highway), and that's good enough efficiency for me. If I cared about absolute energy usage, I would get a M3. I almost never Supercharge, and my electricity is $.11/kWh, so I...

Is there something wrong with my X?

There you go... Doesn't get much flatter than MN. :) 411 Wh/mile is quite in line with my 450-550 Wh/mile in Seattle traffic and topography. I can also see 367 Wh/mile on long, flat stretches without traffic, and that's an absolute best case for a MX.
  6. D

Is there something wrong with my X?

Probably more a result of traffic, roads, and topography of the Seattle area. I also get around 350 Wh/mile on my S75 (non-D) in general driving, but on the rare occasion that I drive away from Seattle to smooth, traffic-free, and more level highway miles, I can see 250-267 Wh/mile. Those are...

Is there something wrong with my X?

I have never gotten better than 400 Wh/mile on my X100D with 20" wheels, under any circumstances. Mixed driving is always ~550 Wh/mile. So, I think the correct number is about 2 miles/% charge for flat highway driving in good conditions, not 3... I think you're building very false...

I am paranoid or is this a bad tint job?

Sadly, I think it is normal. Regret the transparent (IR-blocking only) on my S front windshield as it is always hazy. Love the IR block, but hate the haze.

    6 or 7 seats

I also struggled with this, but ended up getting the 7-seat config, and we are very happy. Here's how I see it: 7-seat: - Excellent for 4, 5, and obviously for 7. OK for 6 with one person getting all of 3rd row, if you don't need the storage. - Big benefit of having a HUGE trunk space with up...

When does the annual 400 kWh Supercharging credit restart?

Does the 400 kWh of Supercharging credit restart on the anniversary of the car's purchase? Just curious as 400 kWh doesn't go very far anyway...

AP takes 90° left turn through intersection without lines. How?

Might be almost entirely car following. In the very recent minor releases, there is a different behavior for a case near me where a left turn lane opens up. For the past few months, AP started taking the left turn lane rather than the straight through lane (100% of the time), but in the one or...

Elon: "Feature complete for full self driving this year"

@Elon pretty much said it means flat, rectangular grid, regular California parking lots. 10% will be generous. However, the whole point of focusing on parking lots/summon is to teach the ML to do more-or-less general driving, i.e., all kinds of complicated obstacle avoidance and driveable...

    6 vs 7 seats, 2nd row movement

Thanks for that info. I wish I'd known to ask about that when the X was in the SC last week. :)
  14. D

    6 vs 7 seats, 2nd row movement

Definitely, absolutely, positively NOT as smooth as in that video for our YE 2018 model X 7-seater. Pushing the button is random and hit-or-miss, and the seat doesn't slide forward elegantly like that. We have to figure out how to operate the other lever to slide the seat forward and back...

    6 vs 7 seats, 2nd row movement

We struggled over 6 vs. 7, but settled on 7, and I'm quite happy. The 6-seat configuration is very cool and makes the best possible 4-seat configuration (although with constrained storage), and it is very comfortable with up to 5-6 people (assuming 2 people are small for the way-back)...

    Ohmman's Airstream Adventures

Sorry to reply on this very old thread, but this is what comes up when you search for Lake Quinault Lodge. I was thrilled to discover over the weekend that Lake Quinault Lodge has installed two 30 Amp J1772 Level 2 chargers. I was hoping to snarf up a little marginal charge to get back to...

    150kw Supercharging

I was rather shocked to see 138 kW at about 52% SoC at Aberdeen over the weekend. There was only one other car at the 8-stall SC. [December 2018 Model X 100D, and I was navigating to the SC, so pre-heating might have been happening.]

2019.8.5 Charger Handle Won't Unlock Door

Haha. I meant use the charge dialog on the screen to unlock/open the charge port door. I did also force the charge port door open, but the charger remains locked.
  19. D

2019.8.5 Charger Handle Won't Unlock Door

OK, I won't worry about it. Another detail, which MIGHT have been a related trigger, is that I had to use a ChargePoint charger, which always requires opening the door via menu, and it might have become unresponsive to Tesla charger handle buttons after that.

2019.8.5 Charger Handle Won't Unlock Door

Since installing 2019.8.5 a few days ago, I haven't been able to open the charger port door with the handle of either of the two chargers that I have (on my Model X; no issues with my Model S on the same release). It seems like an odd coincidence. The charger port will open from the MCU...

    Squeaky 2nd Row Seat

Has anybody ever found a permanent fix for this problem (or at least a home fix so it doesn't have to go into service every time it re-occurs)? Mine was also fixed temporarily by the Bellevue SC, but has returned. It might be temperature-dependent. I had a ranger out for another problem, and...

12V Battery warning just came up with very bad timing - how long do I have?

I got that error on my December 2016 low mileage S, and when I called, they said it wasn't a big rush, but just an indication to make an appointment in the near future. I would have been nervous if I were on a roadtrip...

    Snow Chain configuration from Tesla?

I came to the same conclusion when I gave in and ordered the more expensive Tesla set, but only after trying to order the Maggi set from Amazon, having it not show up, and having Amazon cancel the order and credit my account (after they presumably figured out the seller wasn't delivering). I...

    Where is the enhanced autopilot?

No; it is horrifically difficult to do reliably enough to base braking off of the detection. There are so many odd-angle stop signs and misaligned signal lights in Seattle that I am personally baffled and confused very frequently. Also, there are way too many signs that are obscured that you...
  25. D

    Where is the enhanced autopilot?

I'm on 18.2, and in the past few releases, I would still say that @ < 50 MPH stopping for stopped, previously-untracked vehicles is only about 95-97% Most of the failures are less-common vehicles; it will generally spot cars. It will usually spot trucks, except for semis with very high...

    Where is the enhanced autopilot?

I'm pretty sure that what we have is EAP, except for some minor tuning and improvements to robustness (OK, that's wishful thinking). They can reasonably call it AP1 parity and it quite arguably does better than AP1 on some local road cases. We might get some nav integration, e.g., warning to...

yeah, they need to work on the cursor and the orientation of the cursor (to keep it tangential to your path). Small issue.

    Powerwall in WA state

    OK, that makes sense.
  30. D

    Powerwall in WA state

I see they have lifted that restriction. Initially, that capability was disabled, perhaps due to regulations in CA or someplace. I guess if you live in an area with unreliable power, it might be a useful alternative to a generator, although a generator would be a lot more economical unless you...
  31. D

    Powerwall in WA state

What's the motivation? We have fixed rate service, so no saving ability for night vs. day rates. As I understand it, the Powerwall (at least currently) cannot operate when the grid is off, so it doesn't serve a backup purpose. It also can't "stock up" from the grid, but will only store away...

    Software Update 2018.10.4

The only complaint that I've had with 10.4 is that it seems to be very slow to acknowledge and respond to cars that cut me off (on both highway and local). I've had several scary takeovers required when I was trying very hard to not intervene until it became clear that a collision was imminent...

    Software Update 2018.10.4

I have not seen this behavior with AP2.0 18.10.4. There are a lot of streets in Seattle where parking should not be allowed, and it would be fantastic if it would start to automatically adjust position in the lane. Of course, we don't see cars in adjacent lanes yet, although 10.4 might be...

    WA Supercharging now $0.25/kWh

I think I mentioned earlier that I was using conservative numbers for my 2008 Prius (30/44). New priuses are much better, and the case is even more compelling. There are also very nice hybrid basic and luxury sedans that can beat 30/44. I'd like to hear some explanation for why they charge...

Rattle noise coming from front Air Suspension (2017-18)

That does NOT sound good to me, and the SC should be able to diagnose easily.

    WA Supercharging now $0.25/kWh

I guess you live somewhere warm, flat, and not urban. :) My city and highway mix in Seattle area for the last 2500 miles with hills and constant stop and go is a bit less than 500 Wh/m (I rounded up for convenience). That's $.04-.05 per mile when I charge at home (before whatever benefit I get...
  38. D

    WA Supercharging now $0.25/kWh

That rate is definitely less competitive than a hybrid. Assume 30 MPG overall hybrid (easily achievable for HW/city mix), that's $.10 per mile. @ $.25/kWh and my overall 500 Wh/mile HW/city mix, that means $.125 per mile, which is more expensive, potentially even when you figure in things like...

    Hello, rear radar :-)

Yes, that's what I meant. Regular code today, but probably some NNs+lots of custom logic when true EAP/FSD features get deployed (errr, IF they ever get deployed ;) ).
  41. D

    Hello, rear radar :-)

That's very interesting. So, obviously, this is all crazy speculation, but do you have the impression that the share NN is basically a common feature extraction layer, and they will drive the EAP (and eventually FSD) logic through other NNs and/or custom logic?

How to replace your Tesla door handle

This video is so much more informative than others that make the job look far easier, and don't disclose a lot of essential tricks! Bravo for the video and for scaring off MANY people, who would muck this up hopelessly if they tried.

Downtown Seattle Service Center or Bellevue Service Center?

Saw two dirty M3s out front at the Seattle SC today, so they must be delivered cars coming back for service. I also asked if they have Rangers, and apparently they do, but I don't know why they never do the small fixes that way for me (I was in for 5th try on driver's mirror that won't open...

Testing the AutoPilot 2.0 in software update 2018.4.1

Revisting: Model 3 impact on Model S resale prices

Obviously a matter of personal taste, but I don't see any manner in which the M3 interior isn't more beautiful, functional, and elegant than the MS. Every dimension is slightly bigger than the MS, despite the smaller package. The exterior is a whole different matter (to my eye)... Not a fan of...

Testing the AutoPilot 2.0 in software update 2018.4.1

That's cool. Will presumably get 4.5 when I'm in the SC (for backup mirrors, visit #5) tomorrow. Auto-park almost never offers for me where I drive in Seattle and the curbs and roads are a total 3rd-world mess. It does, however, offer autopark in the middle of city streets all the time. :D...

    Parking at SeaTac airport

Agree that 120 VAC plugs would be ideal for Teslas. I'm glad that somebody is finding spots, but I would never, ever count on one from my experience. One way to discourage ICEing would be to place them in terrible locations, which would be fine by me. But, power is usually near the exits.
  48. D

Revisting: Model 3 impact on Model S resale prices

I've seen M3s in Fremont, and the interior is definitely superior to the MS and I'm sure I would prefer the smaller footpring; however, overall, I still prefer the MS with the larger storage capacity and even the old-fashioned binnacle display still has advantages. However, yesterday, we saw...

The real reason for scrapping ventilated seats!

I had a crease and they cheerfully replaced my ventilated 12/2016 MS driver's seat. The replacement had motor issues, but they repaired that without replacing the whole seat.

    Parking at SeaTac airport

I doubt you will ever find an EV parking space open. I've never seen one. About 25-50% are ICEd, and the rest are full. I don't think they do any anti-ICE enforcement whatsoever (probably don't even have an ordinance on which to do so).
